I responded in kind because I thought your reply to Slam was rude and dismissive. But two wrongs never have made a right so I apologise. Cei-U! I summon the olive branch! It was not my intention to be either. I apologize to Slam if that's how it came off. Thanks. Wait... did three comic book fans on the internet just tone down their argument in a civil and respectful manner? That's what I love about this place!
Also, I'm really glad to see all the variety in everyone's picks. Usually, you want people to see things your way, but I'm glad that this thread is giving me a glimpse into other people's tastes. Sometimes it seems like we all like the same things unless we're discussing Al Milgrom's art.

There's at least one person who occasionally (rarely) posts here who likes Milgrom's art... No going to name names, though. That burden is heavy enough to bear already without public shaming.

I read the original thread, but didn't fine-tooth-comb it. =I assumed that Mad counted as part of EC until it was bought off, so that at least the comic version of Mad and the first couple years of the magazine counted as EC. Honestly, I wouldn't have guessed that there was any other possible way to interpret it. (Because as least the Kurtzman Mad is SO OBVIOUSLY part or EC.)

If the reasoning for a vote for EC includes their Mad publication at the time it was a part of EC I don't see a problem with that.I guess if Mad is the only reason for voting for EC it would be better as just a vote for Mad though. I voted for EC, and while I wasn't specific with any titles since I considered their output as a whole, Mad was a part of that consideration.

Also, I didn't bring it up in the other thread, but publishers like WaRP were left off the roster because they were considered one trick ponies, which I'd kind of consider Mad outside of EC, but as stated, no point in arguing it now.

1) Fantagraphics - Props to Gary and Kim for making the best argument - both in their comics and their, well, arguments - that comics are a worthwhile art form. An amazingly good selection of comics, anthologies, translated books and reprints. Plus a porn line! What more could you want?!
2) Charlton. I appreciate the creative freedom, and even more I appreciate the sense of anything-goes straight-from-the-id ness of the Charlton books. Also Reptisaurus.
3) Oni. Especially their female-centril group of books from the early '00s - Blue Monday, Hopeless Savages, Jingle Belle, Courtney Crumrin et. al. All of it was great and it seems like it strongly influenced the best of the Mainstream today.
4) Eclipse: I like First's line better over-all, but Tales of the Beanworld is my all time favorite comic... and very little of their line was downright bad.
5) Kitchen Sink or Drawn and Quarterly or First, or Fox. I'll get back to you.

Wait... did three comic book fans on the internet just tone down their argument in a civil and respectful manner? That's what I love about this place! That's because we're not random comic book fans interacting on the 'net, we're friends who have comic books in common (all of us, not just shax, Slam and I). Friends argue, friends fight, but friendship endures. Cei-U! I summon the Hallmark moment!

I like Al Milgrom's art too. As I recently said to Cei-U! in another thread... "Whenever someone mentions him [Milgrom], I automatically think of the issues of Peter Parker: The Spectacular Spider-Man that he drew in the early '80s. I consider those some of my favourite Spidey comics (although clearly not a patch on the Silver Age classics, of course) and I always found Milgrom's art perfectly serviceable; he tells the story clearly, with a good sense of pacing and his panels often exhibit fairly interesting (and at times very striking) "camera angles". There's also often a vaguely feverish or claustrophobic feel to his art on Spider-Man, that I really enjoy." So there!

I don't know if I've seen Milgrom's pencils. I know I like his inks on Starlin's art.

For some reason, his art really looked bad with Sinnott inks which is crazy because Sinnott was used to fix artwork in various titles.

I remember that Al Milgrom could be an effective inker over Frank Miller, such as on these two that earned my coins on the strengths of their covers alone:

1. First I echo what others have written about top talent and concepts that were a rival to the big two in the 80's. My favorites were Badger, Nexus, Sable, Starslayer, E-man and Warp.
2. Mad Who didn't love Mad Magazine?. I still love looking at the Mort Drucker movie parodies, he really was a master of the form.
3. Image They came along and did what no one ever did before- they hurt Marvel and Dc. And they also changed the way the big two began to treat creators.
4. Charlton They had a treasure trove of characters that still survive today in DC's stable. Also, the great E-man series was born here.
5.Pacific They had a lot of heart and tried to be a player back in the day. I respect that they gave Kirby a place to create and own his characters.
Honorable mention to Valiant because they had the feel of the early Marvel books and Universe. Too bad there was a mutiny against the brains of the operation and were left with a shell of it's former glory.
