Just read Empowered #9 last night, series is moving nicely along. Hope to manage to get to the comic store this weekend for Sunstone (see my bit on the independent board about it, if you're interested) and Five Ghosts #3 (honestly, I don't think I've seen anybody I recommended to it that didn't like that title. But then I've always recommended it to people who were looking for something exactly like it: good old pulp fiction.)

Read the first volume of Southern Bastards by the Jasons (Aaron & Latour) last night. Great stuff, I am hooked. Wasn't sure I was going to like this or not, but heard a few folks here mention they liked it and I generally am in line with the same stuff they do, so I gave it a shot (hey a trade for like $6 on Amazon why not?), and glad I did. Best opening panel of a comic series ever too. Perfectly captures the tone and zeitgeist of the series.

The closest thing I've ever seen in comics to classic "swamp noir". Really glad you enjoyed it, MRP.

I just read through Superman: Secret Identity by Kurt Busiek and Stuart Immonen. I guess, strictly speaking, under the guidelines of this board it just barely doesn't count as a modern comic (think it was published in 2004). Don't go reporting me to the mods now. Anyway... what a heartwarming story. I think I'm a big sucker for stories where you follow the character for most of their life into old age. I read it digitally when Comixology had a big Superman sale a while back, but I'm looking forward to getting a nice hardcover version. According to Amazon, DC is releasing a deluxe format HC in the near future. I bought the tpb a while back. I've been reading Superman comics for over forty years. This is one of the best Superman stories I've ever read.

I recently finished Fatale by Brubaker and Philips. Damn fine comic. Also just read Slayground, the most recent Parker adaptation by Darwyn Cooke. I hope he keeps these coming. The man's a brilliant cartoonist, and he excels at that kind of 50s/60s gritty pulp-noir style.
What else is on the list...Worlds Apart, the 2nd volume of Slott and Allred's Silver Surfer series. I love this comic. So much fun. I've also been enjoying Trees by Warren Ellis and Jason Howard. It starts off slow, but it's worth sticking with. I've only read it in digital format so far, but I'll definitely be getting it in print. And I've started The Autumnlands: Tooth & Claw. Pretty good so far.

Read the first volume of Wytches last night. It was decent. Snyder's typical flaws as a writer are all on display, but Jock's such a damn fine storyteller that he makes it work and be interesting. Not sure I will follow up with volume 2 or not when it comes out. Of the batch of trades I recently ordered from Amazon (Sixth Gun Vol. 3, Mercenary Sea Vol. 1, Autumnlands Vol. 1, Southern Bastards Vol. 1), this was definitely the weakest imo. Not bad, but not as good as the rest of the stuff I got and really enjoyed.

I think Cook has said he was taking a break form Parker and working on some creator-owned stuff for the next year or two, but we'll see. Trees is at the top of my to read list for trades, I read the first 2 issue swhen it came out and then switched off to trade waiting. -M

I'll be doing that too from here onwards, I think.

LOVE Cooke. And especially his Parker adaptations. I hate that he's taking a break from them.
I had a hard time with Fatale. I think it's just because I wanted more Criminal...and it wasn't it. I'll get back to it at some point and try to have a more open mind. I am loving The Fade Out.
I re-read the first Rat Queens trade as I had gotten ahold of the second. Will read it in the near term. It's okay. I dunno. Kind of a book I don't mind reading if it's cheap or I can borrow it...but not worth putting my money out for it.

Hawkeye is as good as people had told me, having read the first 12 issues now.
Princess Leia #1 did nothing for me...kinda regret picking it up. Artwork was brutal IMO
Low #1 and #2 were very interesting. The artwork is mighty fine and I like the story a lot having picked them both up recently on a whim.

Just read the first issue of Birthright, and it was mighty good. Kind of a similar premise than Terabitha, but probably a little more dramatic. Will soon read the rest.
