Slowly reading Manifest Destiny. Is it still ongoing or is it finally ending this year sometime? that's still going? I got the first few issues WAY back... I was excited to have a new history-based comic. Then there were zombies and I was out . Just checked Image's site... apparently #48 is the last issue... due out end of June. Started in 2013.. with what looks like a 3-ish year break in there.

Newsboy Legion and Boy Commandos Special #1 (2017) This is one of those specials DC published on the 100th anniversary of Jack Kirby's birth that I recently purchased pretty cheaply with a few other comics. I've always been interested in this one because its written and drawn by Howard Chaykin and - it's all right I guess. Basically, the Boy Commandos, in Paris near the end of the war, are trying to track down some Axis agents are active in Allied territory smuggling weapons to the retreating Nazi army. The trail leads to New York, where the Newsboy Legion is already investigating some possible treasonous activities to provide aid to the Third Reich. The art is quite lovely, but the story is a bit disjointed and hard to follow at places. Even so, there's an interesting bit in that the main villain is a rabidly anticommunist American with sympathies for the Nazis and fascists (so its kind of a commentary on current events as well). The back cover of this book, by the way, has this house ad that looks like a spoof but apparently isn't:

Kent State: Four Dead in Ohio, by Derf Backderf.
Apart from the climax of the situation, I knew very little about the 1970 crisis in Kent State University, in which four students were killed by the National Guard. This hardcover covers the buildup to the fatal event, in a deeply researched and (I thought) equanimous way. I really liked the artwork, reminding me of underground comics of the era.
Books like these (or like the March trilogy) should really be found in ever American school's library, as they're a great way to learn about history.

I've recently bought and read Al Ewing and Javier Rodriguez Defenders, which I liked a lot. Dr. Strange meets up with Masker Raider (one of the oldest Marvel/Timely characters, but there is somebody else behind the mask this time) to stop a scientist from travelling back in time using Sise-Neg's magic and recruits several Defenders to help them, including Betty Ross (now the Harpy), Cloud and the Silver Surfer. Rodriguez gets to do a lot of fun designs as the Defenders visit various universes, predating the current one, each with its own theme.
I also got Hickman and Huddleston's Decorum hardcover, but haven't finished it yet. I'm liking it a lot, but this is a lot more like early Hickman's work (Pax Romana, The Red Wing, i.o.w. hard sci-fi.). Special Courier Neha is witness to an assassination. The assassin, upper-class Imogen Smith-Morley, spares Neha and sees in her a potential successor. It's a dense read and Huddleston goes through about a dozen different artstyles so far.

I've been reading that Defenders series on Unlimited as it is released there and quite like it. I may be an issue behind at this point though. -M

One of my pet peeves with most depictions of Krypton is that Kryptonian society often isn't portrayed as alien enough. Claudia Gray's Krypton is no exception, unfortunately. She tries to paint Krypton as adhering to a strict caste system, but this doesn't quite shine through, as the main characters, regardless of their station in life, are very ... Gen Z. I'm aware this series was written with young readers in mind, but still. Anyway, in spite of that, I do like the storyline. Bothers me I have to wait a year before I can read the conclusion, though. 7/10

Read Fables #151. I shouldn't be saying this since I only finished binge reading the original series a few weeks ago, but it feels like the series never ended. Willingham, Buckingham & Leialoha did an excellent job of picking up where they left off.

Just read Reckless, the first book in a series of graphic novels by Ed Brubaker and Sean Phillips. Brubaker offers that his inspiration for these books was serial pulp novels, in particular the Travis McGee series by John D. MacDonald. The result is another terrific collaboration by arguably the best writer/artist team in comics right now. Looking forward to reading the other three books in the series.
