I read the two Ultraman mini-series that Marvel put out over the last year or two, Rise of Ultraman and Trails of Ultraman. It’s a modern tale that has plenty of shallow and deep dive references to the various television series. For what it is, I’m not sure we could have expected much better. The art is good but doesn’t wow me, and the stories set things up nicely for hopefully continuing adventures. I’m perhaps biased as a huge fan of the 1966 show; it, the original Trek, Batman, How the Grinch Stole Christmas, my birth. Has there ever been a better year? Just like the show, we have it mostly a story of the human characters, punctuated with occasional three minutes of monster action. I really enjoy the humor in some of the dialog between our conjoined team, and in the extra pages/stories in each issue 1. I’m really looking forward to the next series. I thought they were pretty good as well.. maybe a bit slow, but good overall. Definitely better than the Netflix revival.

Was kind of under the impression that Ultraman never gets gigantic, which is a disappointment

He did not, no Kaiju.. definitely a different take that didn't feel all that special.
Read the Rai: Deluxe Edition on Hoopla by Dan Abnett.. feels very much like Valiant 2099.. pretty good stuff. Rai is a pretty boring character, but really cool world building and art. Definitely ended in mid story though, and they way Valiant publishes these days, not sure if it will ever be finished, sadly.

I also hate how since the big shift in management, Valiant doesn't really have any sort of overarching idea for the direction in their stories anymore. Which is kind of a shame. Valiant used to be something special, now it's just another publisher

I've haven't read a ton of it, but it seems like it's just a bunch of single books now... not really a shared universe as much as different versions of similar characters.

I just finished a re-read of Mark Russell and Ben Caldwell's 2015 reboot of Prez. Russell came out of the corner hitting on all cylinders. If anything this is stronger now than it was seven years ago with the Cat Flu in the book being remarkably prescient. It's a damn shame they never got to do the second arc.

Just read this week’s new release from Boom, the first issue of Alice Ever After.
So where has Dan Panosian been? I vaguely remember him being sort of a big deal at some point decades ago, right? I don't remember any specifics or if I ever bought his stuff before, but this Alice Ever After is great. And it's got Marginals!

Yeah I lost interest in Valiant with their changes.

Sentry (2018) by Jeff Lemire. I liked it enough to go back and read the other series.

I can't believe I'm here in the modern comics section, but I took a chance and picked up the Kang the Conqueror mini-series from last year. Fabulous read, this could have been made 20 years ago honestly. Great art, great concept and execution.
It's been a LONG time since I've read something modern and felt this way.

Batman/Superman: World's Finest has gotten to a wonderful start. I think it's the best Batman book out currently. Love the Silver Age vibes.

Got the trade for Eleanor and the Egret by John Layman and Sam Keith. Fun story, though (not surprisingly) kinda weird. what's with Layman being obsessed with eating stuff? Keith is fantastic here.. he's too much sometimes, but this one is great. Definitely worth a read for a change of pace.

Haven't read Blue and Gold yet, but it looks interesting. Looking forward to checking it out.
