For me the only thing that was "new and improved" in the 80s that was worse than the new G.I. Joe, was new Coke. G.I. Joe-the new Coke of toys. -M

my top 5 fictional detectives, in roughly chronological order:
C. Auguste Dupin (The Purloined Letter alone would earn him immortality) Inspector Bucket (relatively minor character from Dickens's Bleak House, but memorably drawn and an important forerunner) Sherlock Holmes Nero Wolfe and Archie Goodwin (if that isn't cheating) Philip Marlowe
You could consider Holmes and Marlowe as the two archetypal fictional detectives, each representative of a separate branch of the genre (though not the earliest example of either), and Wolfe and Goodwin as a combination of the two.
I read almost all the Agatha Christie novels when I was young and I enjoyed the Poirot and the Miss Marple books but my favourite Christies tended to be stand-alones that fell outside those series.
A lot of the other famous detective series I have yet to read - the Lord Peter Whimseys, the Maigrets, the Mike Hammers, etc - but I hope to get those and lots of others in the coming years since I consider myself a fan of the genre.

Give me Duke, Scarlet, Snake-Eyes, et al over those big dolls any day. You mean the only guys with army training who shoot worse than Imperial stormtroopers? At least in the cartoons. Never touched the comics. That's because in the cartoons they're forbidden to use actual guns and must use laser blasters. The stormtroopers are getting theirs from the same cheap provider. Shoddy craftsmanship, that's where it leads!
