Got a jury duty summons today. Deciding whether I can do it or try getting out of it for disability reasons which I did once before... I checked it out and they compensate you $20 (can.) per day plus parking or bus fare. That's if a trial runs 10 days or less. Somehow I think there is better compensation in the U.S., does anyone know roughly? I thought it'd at least be the minimum wage and am a bit shocked we might get as little as $2 an hour (and have to provide our own food costs though coffee and tea is supposedly provided). They make it very unappealing to your duty, and we recently had a horrible trial locally where people had to hear awful details about two little girls murdered Christmas eve. It depends on the state. But in Idaho it's $10/day plus mileage. In Oregon it's $10 a day for the first two days, then $25/day, plus mileage.

So not that much difference I guess after all. I must've based thinking the compensation might be more on blood donors getting paid in the states whereas here you get an ice cream cup or box of juice. I'll see what those who might have to pick me up after each day say about it, I feel I should do my duty if I can and maybe it would spare someone else a lot busier than I am from it.

AND work employers are required to provide you the day(s) off to attend jury duty WITH pay in Arizona should jury duty days fall during your regularly scheduled hours.

Well, I hope it goes well if you do decide to do it, Becca.

I look upon jury duty as a civic responsibility and a learning experience. It is amazing sitting there during the choosing session to hear all of the ways people attempt to get out of jury duty. And some of the judges responses can be quite hilarious. One time a lady tried to get out of duty stating she has a parent at home that relies upon her 24 hrs a day. Judge didn't blink an eye, looked at his laptop info on the person for a moment and informed the woman it must be very difficult taking care of 2 dead parents. Another time watched a man who made all of his responses so extreme that they judge smiled and said it was so nice to see a person embracing the judicial system to it's fullest intent and that he would make a perfect juror to balance against all of the uncaring participants. Usually, whenever I am in for my jury summons I quickly get passed over as an unlikely choice. My 2 brothers have both committed drug felonies and spent time in prison. I have a cousin who did prison time for murder. Another cousin who went AWOL from the military and spent time under house arrest. An uncle who was a Vice Detective, 2 other cousins who were City Patrol officers and another uncle who was a County Deputy Sheriff. After stating all the above, most attorneys don't want me near their cases. Wonder why?!?

That is kind of what happens in the attorney thoughts I believe. They are "looking" for specific positive/negative people they can hope to influence or "guide" in the decision process. They must be second guessing themselves as to which way I may think in cases. What they don't seem to "understand" is that I am a right is right, wrong is wrong type (thank you mom for the moral upbringing (why the hell my brothers/cousins turned bad?) and comics for teaching me good trumps evil) of person who believes in the responsibility of actions, words, thoughts and deeds, etc.

LOL, I've had the opposite experience: I'm often placed placed on a jury and have served on many over the years. A few months ago I got called for jury duty and knowing how much time is spent just waiting, I brought along Alter Ego #2. Had a great time reading up on Gil Kane, Larry Lieber, and Bob Kanigher. Then we were sent to lunch and when we came back, what do you know--they thanked us for our "service"and dismissed us! A new experience for me Btw, in NY jurors usually get paid their normal wages (from their employer) while on jury duty service. But people who are not employed or who work for a company that has 10 or fewer employees get a state-issued payment of $40 a day.

Credit where due. Our actual costs for my wife's surgery ended up being a lot less than anticipated and feared. It was still several thousand and it's still obnoxious that we didn't know what it would actually be until it was a done deal and we had no way to argue it, but at least it fell within what our insurance and HRA covered. I will take it.

I was trying to be fair and update my previous rant and give due credit without getting too political... but, yes, I completely agree with you.

I don't know if I would ever buy these, but I found this comic listed online and it made me laff! Entertainment along the lines of those old Real Men's Adventure mags with titles like "weasels ripped by flesh"! After being betrayed by the bears that raised him, the legendary Shirtless Bear-Fighter wanders the forest he's sworn to protect, fistfighting bears, eating flapjacks, and being the angriest man the world has ever known!
When wild-eyed, super-strong bears attack the citizens of Major City, Shirtless ventures into the human world to do what he does best...PUNCH THOSE BEARS IN THE FACE! But all is not as it seems. Someone is manipulating Shirtless...and only by confronting the demons of his past can Shirtless hope to save his future!

I will take it. A few years ago, a woman on Twitter claimed that expecting healthcare to be a right was akin to expecting a sports car to be a right. I wanted to reply - and then I remembered that false equivalence stupidity in a person is something I can't work with. I couldn't even begin to tackle the stupidity of comparing healthcare to a sports car. It's like having a conversation with someone who thinks the world is flat. You'd waste your time, you'd get nowhere, you'd achieve nothing - and they'd still think they were right. So I didn't reply.

Yeah, you can't reason someone out of a belief they did not reason themselves into.
