Well, I guess it was inevitable. Archie, which is currently the longest running/highest numbered series in American comics, is relaunching with a new #1 next year. Mark Waid will be writing, with Fiona Staples doing the art. Staples will be just doing the first three issue arc. Not sure about Waid. I am hoping that Archie will put out variants with the old numbering, as they've been doing a lot of great variants recently. But I am not very hopeful. www.nytimes.com/2014/12/15/business/as-archie-nears-75-riverdale-gets-a-youthful-infusion.html?smid=tw-share

Oh boy. I loved Life with Archie, and Afterlife with Archie is one of my favorite current comics. But I also love the classic look of the regular Archie books. I get that that look has been around for decades, and maybe it's time to shake things up. But . . . I guess we'll just have to wait and see.

I'm surprised they're doing it with the main Archie title, but their direct market comics with popular creators and an older target audience have been very successful for them. I do hope they keep the classic Archie style around, at least in a digest or something. There's so many Archie related titles out there, but they have been consolidating lately.

Well, they've gotten my attention for the first time ever in the last year with the main Archie character instead of just the Red Circle line.
I'm sure they'll pick and choose their numbering, like Marvel and DC do.

Fiona Staples is only doing the first three issues.

Fiona Staples has been doing some great variant covers for Archie for a couple years now. She did this series of rock covers based on Josie and Pussycats and The Archies: She also did this Little Mermaid variant for Betty and Veronica #262:

I didn't even know the regular Archie comics had variant covers Yeah, they've been doing regular variant covers for a couple years now. I think each issue since 641 or so has had a variant, and a smattering of issues before that. They've had some really sweet covers. Some of my favorites: #646 Andrew Pepoy EC tribute! #648 Walt Simonson Thor variant! Story by longtime Thor writer Tom DeFaclo! #656 Ramon Perez Saturday Evening Post tribute: #660 Dan Parent classic pin-up variant: And, of course, the Archie #649 Nighthawks variant by Jeff Shultz, which I own the original art to:

Yet none of this has led to a resurgence of people wearing Jughead beanies...

I just can't believe that Mark Waid is writing Archie. SPOILERS In the first issue, Reggie murders Veronica and uses her flesh as mystical armor to use against Archie, who must enlist the aid of Dilton to help him understand the arcane arts of "mathematics" and free his friends from Reggie's traps.

I really dislike that the central concept in this reboot is to make Archie more in touch with the youth of today. The entire point of Archie is that, while the times have changed, the characters and their town have remained timeless.
I'm assuming, though, that there will still be Double Digests on sale at checkout counters, so it's not like the real Archie and his cast won't still be in print.

I don't mind (and actually enjoy) the variations on the Archie theme, but the series as a whole needs rebooting the same way Peanuts did.
