One of my bronze-age favourites, GHOST RIDER, has evolved into this...and I DESPISE it. Not the same character though - latest issues have one other of the motorbike GRs in there fighting this one, who turns out to be related to an old GR character... FWIW, I think it's been an interesting take on the concept, and some of the art has been tremendous.

John Byrne has made it clear that he HATED what Mantlo did to his creation (not that he gives a SHIT about Alpha Flight, unfortunately). And, it's okay, we ALLLLLLL hated what Mantlo did to Alpha Flight. Ah, okay. I only remembered hearing about Puck, but this is not surprising. AF is probably my favorite Byrne work, up there along with FF. What happened after he left made me want to cry. And we didn't even get a nice long Hulk run from Byrne as a trade-off. My go-to phrase for anything that goes wrong is, "It's Mantlo's fault. It's ALWAYS Mantlo's fault."

Well that's a bit harsh.

Well that's a bit harsh. Yeah. It probably is. But I dragged my way through his Alpha Flight. I read every ruining moment of every single character. It was awful. He destroyed my favorite Alphan. He may her into a character I could not tolerate. And he got rid of the entire original team.

He may her into a character I could not tolerate. And he got rid of the entire original team. Same. I bought it up until the 60s, I think. No idea why. The only new character I kind of liked was Purple Girl. Who was your favorite Alphan? On a side note, I wish he'd gotten to do his Derangers Epic series with Butch Guice as was originally planned. Apparently that fell through and he incorporated them into AF, but except for Goblyn, they all kind of got short shrift. It seemed like an interesting idea when I read about it in Amazing Heroes.

In 1988 Steve Ditko created a new character that was a tribute to heroes of the silver age era. That character was Robbie Baldwin, aka Speedball. This character has since become one of my all-time favorite Ditko creations. During Warren Ellis' run on Thunderbolts, Ellis decided to turn Robbie Baldwin into Penance, complete with a new suit that has hundreds of tiny spikes built into the costume, constantly stabbing Baldwin whenever he moves. Penance can only use his powers when he's in horrible, horrible agony--so everybody wins, except Baldwin, who incidentally loses... constantly. This change pretty much destroyed everything about Ditko's original ambitions for the character of Robbie Baldwin and his previous legacy as Speedball. I hated it.

Bill Mantlo's various comics with Spider-man are pretty good, I'd say it's up there with Micronauts.

Thankfully, I've never seen that. Hopefully, I never will. Cei-U! I summon the dodged bullet! BTW those captions are poor Peter realizing his archnemesis cucked him.

My example was going to be the scenes of Gwen Stacy and Norman Osborn having sweaty sex. I'm sure that made somebody turn their head, be it Romita, Kane, or Conway. Thankfully, I've never seen that. Hopefully, I never will. Cei-U! I summon the dodged bullet! I guess you'll have to read it if I send it to you, Kurt.

I hated how Steven Grant wrapped up OMEGA THE UNKNOWN in a DEFENDERS arc. It was a given that he couldn't have finished things as Gerber would have, but Grant could've tried to keep the emotional tone. It was so bad, even the non-Gerber versions of HOWARD THE DUCK are models of fidelity.
However, some time before that Gerber showed that he could be just as callous toward another writer's creation, penning a really condescending final episode for John Warner's BLOODSTONE in a backup for RAMPAGING HULK.

How would you rate it compared to the original 70s series, and 90s take, along with some of the recent minis (including femme Ghost Rider)

The thought of Gwen getting bonked by the Green Goblin is...actually quite exciting in my book. But Aunt May and Doc Ock? I love dirty talk but...fuddy duddy? I dunno what's worse, Aunt May's granny panties or fuddy duddy talk.
