This is what I picked up yesterday... I've only read Savage Sword so far, which I really enjoyed. 6 short stories featuring different REH characters, each tied to the concept of the Black Stone that appeared in various REH stories, setting up the Battle of the Blackstone event starting next week. It also featured the first published comic story by Jeff Shanks, the REH scholar and archaeologist who writes all the back matter in the current Conan comics it's a Conrad and Kirowan story (the other characters include Solomon Kane, Dark Agnes, El Borak and Conan. The sixth is a story of Brissa, the Pict scout introduced by Jim Zub in the first arc of the new Conan book. -M

Frankenstein #1Story and Art by Michael Walsh Summary: A boy is mourning by his father's grave one night when suddenly he hears two men approach, as he hides he watches as they exhume his father's body for some foul deed. Plot/Art: So far Image is one for two in their adaptations; their adaptation of Dracula while gorgeous to look at offered nothing new to the tale and was tediously over narrated but their Creature of the Black Lagoon felt like an authentic sequel to the original while still telling it's own tale of horror. With that kind of track record I wasn't sure what would come when it came to their take on Frankenstein...and after reading the first issue I'm still a little unsure. Walsh's art is definitely appropriately atmospheric and I like that he's not trying to reinvent the wheel with his take on Mary Shelley's classic but I found myself slightly troubled by just how close he hewed to James Whale's film. It's not that I mind that he's setting his story sort of between the raindrops of Whale's adaptation, there's new perspective that can often be gained in following that path instead what bothers me is that he uses the likenesses of Colin Clive in depicting his Doctor Frankenstein and even goes so far as to adapt the likeness of Dwight Frye's Fritz. While I enjoy that it makes the comic feel like a part of the film we never saw the ethical questions of using the likenesses of long dead actors. The idea of exploring the creation of the monster through the eyes of someone who loved one of the people who was used to create the monster is an interesting idea and I'll definitely read on...but it's definitely still problematic. Grade:7/10

Mariko Tamaki continues to knock it out of the park with her new Zatana story. I'm not sure why the Phantom Stranger needed to be gender bent but the over all tone of the book is so light and fun that it's a joy to read.

Aliens VS Avengers was...interesting. It's set in the future instead of the present like most previous Alien crossovers with DC characters and features aging versions of Miles Morales, Bruce Banner and Carol trying to help the last of humanity survive the Alien invasion. From the art it looks like Cap and Black Panther also survived the initial invasion so it'll be interesting to see where the story goes.

Issue #3 was delayed a bit I and did not end up picking it up until a month ago. I still need to read it. Very excited to to read the El Borak story. I enjoyed the comic adaptions of the Conan pastiches of the El Borak stories, so I read the originals over the past year and greatly enjoyed them. El Borak is a criminally neglected character. I hope the SSoC writer did him justice.

I really enjoyed Savage Sword of Conan ... the set up for the big Black Stone event. The Manga-ish Dark Agnes story was very surprising, but also really good.
I thought it was nice for Brissa to a proper origin story too, I think Jim Zub has done a really good job (surprisingly much better than Jason Aaron, who I had much higher expectations for.
My only issue.. that was the best cover they could come up with? Looks like a 5 minute computer graphics job that would be at home in a video game from 20 years ago.

There's actually a process video on youtube somewhere of the artist making that cover. There were a lot of complaints about AI being used, but there wasn't. It's not my favorite cover Titan has done, but some of the criticism of it has crossed some lines (not saying you did, but there's a lot of nastiness out there). I did not get the variant this time, sticking with the main cover only, but upon reflection, I would have gotten the B cover instead if I could do it over again. -M

I think it looks more like someone tried to create a Diablo 2 Conan skin than AI, but I'm sure that's the first thing everyone says if they don't like something these days. I try to keep my pull list simple so I don't usually specially request variants or anything, but I agree if I had paid attention this one might have been an exception. Ah well, doesn't change the excellent content within

Ah well, doesn't change the excellent content within All our pulls at my lcs go through Comics Hub, and I avoid the pull every month titles so I can more easily drop something I don't like. sample a first issue without having to commit to the series, or pick which cover I want if options are listed. It means having to go through the catalog once a month to make my order, but I do that anyways to see if there are new series or trades I want to order anyways, so it's not a big deal for me. But unless a variant really speaks to me, I usually stick with the A cover on books (especially DC where the A cover is a buck cheaper in most cases). -M

My store uses Pullbox through diamond (I suspect its similar) and I too look through it most months, but I feel like I'd miss stuff if I did it that way.

My store uses Pullbox through diamond (I suspect its similar) and I too look through it most months, but I feel like I'd miss stuff if I did it that way. Comics Hub also updates a FOC list each week, which I cab glance at in under five minutes, so I can usually double check if I missed anything before it is too late. I usually glance at it when I go to the Comic Hub site to post in these threads of what I am getting each week. -M
