I like “cross-pollination” of heroes/villains in comics, so this is a good opportunity to share this: That's a good issue by Shooter. It's where Cap gets his own bike as a reward for helping this guy's teenage son out Mike Zeck provides the artwork. Totally Awesome!

Now, for the movies, Captain America: The First Avenger was the first one I felt got it right, with a level of quality, even if the third act felt rushed to get him frozen for the future. I still think thet should have been held off until at least the end of the second film; but, a mediocre Avengers film took precedent (the fight in it is just too generic for me to get very invested in it, Loki or no Loki). I didn't mind First Avenger leading into the first Avengers movie, what I did mind was the fact that the third movie was Captain America "in name only" and was just another Avengers film. That's why I think I let Falcon and The Winter Soldier get "pass" from me, it was about a C+ show at best, but made up for my frustrations with Civil War

Mike Zeck provides the artwork. Totally Awesome! I really like Zeck's artwork. He's somewhat underrated I think.

It took me a few issues to warm to Zeck; but, not many. It was the eyes and the facial expressions, which took some adjusting. After that, I was fine. Good, dynmaic work and he could keep the characters looking like individuals.

Been reading Waid's original run and I've got to say that I've been greatly enjoying it. His issues with Skull were a particularly high mark for the series. The only problem I have with his take on Skull is that Waid kind of ignored his mission of subversion of the America populace from Gruenwald's run. We also got this great scene I'll also be the first to admit while the idea of Steve's kinetic replacement for his shield wasn't my favorite, but it did eventually grow on me

I know, right?! Never cared for any of the replacement shields, except for the "triangular" one shown here... But yeah, it was such a great relief when The Original got "fixed" (XD)

Yeah! Walker lends himself well to these kinds of changes/alterations. But personally, the Wakandan shield will always be my preference...

Do his knuckle dusters leave a USA imprint on faces a la The Phantom's skull ring? If so, that's kind of awesome.

I love Stern/Byrne and DeMatteis/Zeck.
I semi-followed the Gruenwald run (mainly because I liked the Serpent Society) but I don't think it would still hold up for me. Gru's writing tends to skew a lot younger.

I semi-followed the Gruenwald run (mainly because I liked the Serpent Society) but I don't think it would still hold up for me. Gru's writing tends to skew a lot younger. I'd been hearing about how good it was for years and when I finally sat down and read it, I realized that it wasn't for me. I think Gruenwald has an amazing talent for writing characters, but doesn't necessarily know how to write compelling story arcs. I think once he finished his story about Steve being forced to retire as Cap, he kind of ran out of steam (and it was a really good arc too, even I'll admit it).
He also didn't endear me to his run by having both Jack and Bernie saying their respective "goodbyes" to Steve around the start of his run. Not to mention that he kind of nixed Steve's personal life, which I felt was kind of a let down after how well DeMatties had written it. (I mean it's intrinsic to the very fabric of the character!)
Did think that his "Stars & Stripes" computer hotline and having Skull trying to slowly corrupt the American people through subversion was a neat idea though (I was kind of miffed that when Waid took over the book, they kind of got rid of that element of the story. Not to mention Americop, Jack Flag, and Free Spirit. Walker/USAgent did seem to stick around though, which I appreciated because of how good of an antithesis to Steve the character is)
I did also hear that his run is getting an Omnibus sometime next year
