Matt Baker's work is certainly appreciated around these parts, frequently showing up in this contest. So let's just determine, once and for all, which of his covers is the all-time best. As decided by us, of course; but who better? I'm surprised we haven't done this before, but I double-checked the master list. But even if we had, hell, the guy did enough good work to fill 2 contests, right? THE RULES - Post one, and only one, classic cover that fits the theme of the contest. Cover must be from a published comic book or collected volume published before July 2013. Please include the title and issue number of your selection in bold in case some posters cannot see your image. Covers must be posted before voting begins. Voting takes place on Tuesday, August 1, 2023 beginning at 12:01 am PST and ending at 11:59 pm PST. Vote by posting the name of the poster whose cover best fits the theme or that you simply like the most in bold. The winner of the contest is the entrant with the most votes after the voting period ends. The winner picks the theme for the next week's contest. If you don't think a particular cover fits the theme, just don't vote for it. Please don't post disparaging remarks about it. If a cover is more recent than the classic time frame (10 years, so July 2013), kindly point it out to the poster, who may then choose an alternate entry before voting begins. And to start us off, here's Teen-Age Temptations #2, 1953

I've been reading Stephen Ambrose's Band of Brothers, so here is something appropriate to that era.... Canteen Kate #3

It's kind of like asking which child is your favorite...but this cover is at the top of my Matt Baker list. It's exuberant, joyous, and seductive; it draws the viewer right into its world. Not to mention the technical mastery is unparalleled (IMHO). Cinderella Love #25 (1954)

Authentic Police Cases #28 (July, 1953). Cover by you-know-who.
Yeah, this is a very tough contest, but i've always loved this cover's "as its happening" energy.

Teen-Age Romances #42, March 1955-- St. John Publishing Co.
probably my all-time favorite Baker cover. There are racier ones, but I think that the composition, inking and coloring are absolutely gorgeous on this one.
