This isn't from a book that came out this week, but I just flipped open the latest issue of Peacemaker Tries Hard and couldn't get any further than this ad: We we're talking about modern books that were worth it in the previous week's thread shaxper , and while I can't be sure that this is really worth it as this hasn't come out yet but this certainly seems like a book that would fit that category based on how amazing Waid's World's Finest has been. I'll be buying this one for sure.

Speaking of Peacemaker... Peacemaker Tries Hard! #3Written by Kyle Starks Art by Steve Pugh Summary: Left for dead by Monsieur Mallah and the Brain, DC's most pathetic antihero, Peacemaker, seeks physical and emotional support at a bar. Plot: I have never been a fan of Peacemaker when plaid straight but ever since he was brought to life John Cena in Suicide Squad and the eponymous Peacemaker show I have absolutely adored this bumbling, broken take on the character and Starks just continues to make it even better. In the latest issue we get the return of the Wrecking Crew knock offs the Demolition Team who want revenge for Peacemaker killing Steam Roller in the last issue and making it so the team now had to attend mandatory safety meetings because Peacemaker ruined their streak of 63 three days accident free. Yes, you read that right, super villains that respect OSHA code. It's such an absurd mash up of superheroic story telling and work place humor that shouldn't work but somehow just does. And Starks didn't stop there he also threw in a throwback to a golden age hero that I bet no one remembers(I had to look him up) Red Bee. Starks bring him back as Peace Keeper's over the hill parole officer, whom after threatening to turn Peacemaker in for crossing state lines(again more work place humor) agrees to over look it and help him because Peacemaker only did it to try and rescue his pet dog. It was an exchange with humor, heart and a fun bit of super hero trivia that just made for a fantastic reading experience. This may not be your cup of tea if you were a fan of Peacemaker before James Gunn and John Cena got a hold of him(are there actual fans of the original comic book Peacemaker?) but for anyone else this over the top humorous take is pitch perfect. Art: Pugh continues to balance a realistic look when it comes to characters facial expression( his Peacemaker in particularly looks just like Cena) with an almost Looney Tunes look when it comes to his depictions of the action. Much like the mash up of genres in the plot this mix of photo-realism and over the top cartoon like physics shouldn't work but it all comes together in a cohesive way that is sure to make you smile. Grade:9/10

Capt America #750. Several stories showcasing both Steve and Sam. First is a flashback story about Sam with Misty giving Sam a new shield and asking him to be Capt America again. Then Steve at the Destroyer's funeral. Steve and Bucky make peace with each other. Then Sam speaking at a graduation. Then Steve thanking an old friend at his grave. Then Steve by Dan Jurgens with Jarvis. Maybe my favorite story. Then Steve and Sam in a friendly shield throwing competition. And in the last story Steve in NYC in winter. A really nice celebration of the legacy of Capt America.

King Kong: The Great War #2Written by Alex Cox Art by Tommaso Bianchi Summary: After surviving their first night on Skull Island the crew of U-184 find themselves facing one primordial horror after another. Plot: Cox's Kong continues to show promise as a dark, terrifying tale about a shipwrecked crew trying to survive Skull Island and make it back to Germany. The monsters are fantastic, Kong is mysterious and the human characters show a lot of pathos and the fact that they are WWI German naval officers and yet still sympathetic is really interesting. The only problem is that although there is a veneer of newness the main thrust of the plot is sure to leave any long time fan of King Kong(like myself) often feeling like they've been there and done that all before. From encountering herbavores that are no less deadly due to their size, to being attacked by an unknown creature in the swamp and their over all goal climbing Skull Mountain the scenes all come from the original film and even occur in the same order. With the heroes being German seamen there is potential to really be different than any other story we've seen thus far but so far it's nearly a shot by shot retelling of the original film. It's well told and the mood is fantastic so I'm going to keep picking it up but it's sadly not as inventive as I was hoping. Art: I think the main reason I'm sticking with this book is honestly the art. Bianchi's style is just plain menacing and dripping with an eerie mood. Every panel is just choked full of a dark, foreboding feel with threats both seen and unseen. The deaths are shocking in their suddenness, and Bianchi gives each sailor (including the Captain) the look of shock that can only come from a constant state of fear. Grade:6.5/10

Dr Strange #5. the wedding of Clea's mom Umar to Tiburo. Plus Dormammu is the officiant. Of course a wedding like this is weird and things get strange (pun intended). MacKay and Ferry continue their classic run on this title featuring Stephen and Clea Strange.

(Also Tom Taylor's Nightwing, and I'd love to see what he thinks of the 'Batgirl of Burnside'... and Gotham Academy, but he'd be a Maps fan for sure!)

Batgirl of Burnside was really good, and I love Gotham Academy( I actually started a reread of that yesterday!). Also, there's now a preview out now...and it's just as amazing as the image above.
