(...) Seems the “New Universe” became the comicbook equivalent of WCW Thunder! (...) Yeah, the New Universe as a whole was supposed to be the next big thing, but it just fizzled out pretty ignominiously. At the time, I picked up the first two issues of Starbrand and about the first half-dozen of DP7. I thought the latter in particular was pretty solid and promising. Ah, Starbrand. Yes. Can’t recall the exact dialogue, but Starbrand realised he couldn’t fly without getting his bearings/coordinates. So different from superheroes who just fly and can find their way even if they’re travelling from New York City to Guernsey. Just a taste of how different the New Universe would be. I need to get all those back issues one day.

How about Blue Devil?
Sure, he never really went away, surviving in the back ground in various supernatural stories and even getting in on the action during Shadowpact but once he had his own solo book that lasted for 31 issues.

Good one. Saw him in a DC reprint title here called Heroes. Should have soared high.

Couple of random 90s DC books I liked that didn't go far... fun, unique stuff that just didn't find an audience. They even tried a Titans crossover, if I recall, to no avail. I don't think the characters have ever shown up anywhere again... seems like they could have been used a few times.. like Agent of Shade, but I don't think they did. I was never clear if this one was meant to be in the DCU or not, but it was fun. I half-suspect DC doesn't never own the rights.

There is one I am thinking of, but I can’t remember the name. DC, circa 1995-96. Had a flaming head (I think). Saw the ad for the book in an issue of Kingdom Come. Didn’t see him often.
Or maybe I’m just stupid and I imagined that…

No, not him. Damn, I wish I could give more. I think the comic debuted in 1996. May have seen the character jumping off a building. Damn, what was it? My memory is usually very good.

I always thought this guy had a lot of crossover potential, but seems to have faded from site...

The problem of flight navigation was always a tiny seed in the back of my mind, but he slammed me full in the face with it, and now I think about it every time I see a hero fly any sort of distance.

I loved Blue Devil! Another character who, when they didn't know what to do with him, they just made him dark and depressed. Why can't we have fun things... and if we can't, why can't they just leave them alone? Blue Devil was in that era of a lot of fun creativity at DC... Blue Devil, Blue Beetle, Amethyst, Ambush Bug, Arion, Arak, Captain Carrot... good times.

Yeah, the New Universe as a whole was supposed to be the next big thing, but it just fizzled out pretty ignominiously. I am no fan of Shooter, but this wasn't his fault. It was supposed to roll out with a host of A-list, fan favorite creators, but then Marvel management refused to budget for it, so instead we got standard, competent product that looked like all the rest of the mid-range Marvel line. Nothing bad, but nothing that jumped out at the reader either, and not enough to sustain an entire new line.

I liked the book a lot, particularly the early issues, but I never thought it would be better than a niche book. Paris Cullins seemed like he was going to be a big deal artist for a hot minute and then he kind of disappeared.
