I'm hearing that Carlos Pacheco has passed away today at the age of 60. Two months ago he was diagnosed with ALS and announced he was retiring from comics as a result. I know he's most closely associated with X-Men, but for me, he'll always have a special place for drawing Avengers Forever, especially issue #9, the origin of my favorite villain, Kang.

He was talented to be sure, but he was never my cup of tea. 60 is way too young.

He was one of the nicest guys I met a convention. He was soft spoken and friendly the one time I met him. I first encountered his work during Mark Waid's stint on The Flash in the 90s as a guest penciller for a few issues and was instantly hooked on his work. It was brilliant and kinetic that matched what Waid was going for. While most people love him from his X-Men, Avengers Forever will be his masterpiece. Kurt Busiek wrote a brilliant series, along with Arrowsmith. An underrated Pacheco book was Avengers/Squadron Supreme

His work evoked the pure joy and love of comics on every page. His aesthetic, ability and narrative storytelling were always top notch, but what set it apart was the sheer joy you could feel in every panel and on every page. Rest in Power!

Sixty is way too young... and ALS is a horrible disease. Rest in peace, Mr. Pacheco, and thanks for the great stories.

I had mostly stopped reading super-hero comics by the time Pacheco came along. But I really did love his work on Arrowsmith with Kurt Busiek.
