Sword of Azrael #4Written by Dan Watters Art by Nikola Cizmesija Summary: In the heat of battle with St. Dumas' first angel, Satan, Jean Paul and Azrael uncover the memory of the first Azrael. Plot: With the fourth chapter things really kick into high gear with a combination of relentless, fast paced action and some really great world building. In the last issue we learned that the "system" that allows Azrael to be the super-soldier he is isn't actually a gift from the Christian god as he always assumed...but is rather based on a discarded father-box from Apocalypse that fell to Earth in a battle between Orion and Kalibak during the Crusades. While it was long known in the comics that Azrael was the result of programming one of the central dramas was whether it was actually inspired by god or man and here we get the definitive answer and it's honestly more interesting than the other two options and the way that the Azrael personality shuts down in the face of the revelation just highlights that. If it was the old dichotomy Azrael could simply say that it was the will of god working through man...but a pantheon from outside time and space? It turns Azrael's belief structure on its ear and it creates another drama: with Azrael incapacitated Jean Paul has to commit violence in order to survive destroying the barrier between the two personalities. How will that affect him going forward? It'll certainly be a big question to answer and I'm looking forward to what Watters does with it. Art: While the fight scenes between Azrael and Satan were sometimes muddled by Cizmesija's manga influenced style the mood he created with his angular lines and inky blacks really sold it as a sight to behold. And the contrast between the shadows and the bright lava pit? Beautiful.
Seriously, if you're not reading this book you should be.
Grade:8.5/10

NEW CHAMPION of SHAZAM! #3. Written by Josie Campbell. Art by Evan Doc Shaner.
After last issue's disastrous outing as Lady Shazam (ugh), Mary is the laughingstock of the internet. The missing persons problem in Philly is getting worse...
In this issue we meet a professor at Fawcett Community College Dr G that takes an interest in Mary and wants to hire her to be her assistant. We also meet Uncle Dudley (this version of him in the new dynamic). And Darla goes missing as Mary ignores her while she tries to help Mary...
Great story. Absolutely beautiful art. Fantastic creative team that could sell an ongoing series.
What is holding Shazam back right now is DC needs to decide on the name... Shazam/Capt Marvel/Capt Thunder/etc and stick with it. And while I don't mind this new home with the six kids I really would prefer to see the super hero personas go back to the original 3.

I'm really sad this only has one issue left, I love the family dynamic but it needs more time to be built up more and that's just not going to happen in a single issue. About the only negative I have is that they seriously telegraphed who's behind the disappearances here in this issue. Sure, they needed to give us some hint with only one more issue to go but they made it pretty blatant by giving the professor a misunderstood back story and then tied the missing people to studies at the university so it won't be surprising when the big bad gets revealed next issue.
