Gotta be honest, my friend, I am totally ignorant about comic book prices. A quick search These are pretty low grade.

I just got aced out by the Market. I was going to say Avengers #4 but most copies are 1500 and above.

Assuming FANTASTIC FOUR #1 is $1,000 or less, I would like to own that in its original form. I would love this one as well, and so many regrets with key Marvel books I could have gotten years ago but I put off thinking I had time. The MCU has destroyed the Marvel market, I won't play there (for the larger ticket items) anymore for the most part sadly.

I had an FF #1 for years, autographed by Jack Kirby to boot. I sold it in the mid-'80s for $600 in trade at O'Leary's Books.

I'll go with Wow Comics #9 which starts Mary Marvel's run in that series. Recent realized prices are a bit scant, but it looks like from at least one sale earlier this year I have a shot at landing upwards of a VG or so copy which would be great, especially for a book this old.

I was also thinking about maybe doing a sequel to this thread if there was any interest, same idea but I'd up it to a single $10,000 or under book. You should be able to just swing a low grade copy still in this range, so if still interested, we can catch this one there!

Good idea!
There is a way of thinking about this outside the norms: I’ve been to car boot sales here, and some people probably don’t know the value of what they sell. I’ve seen THE BEANO annuals selling for small amounts, so this is obviously just a seller raising a bit of beer money. However, I know that a person selling BEANO annuals online is gonna be very aware of what their value is, and he/she will sell it at a *huge* price.
I don’t think my late stepfather ever read a US comic in his life (he had read COMMANDO), and if he had a copy of FANTASTIC FOUR #1 lying around, I’m sure he’d probably put a 50p or £1 sticker on it if he was selling it at a book fair (or maybe a litte more), but I know that the person selling a copy of that comic on eBay is going to be savvy about what he can get for it.

I got high-grade Beano Annuals in the US for 99c each

It appears that Detective Comics #142 in about 3.5 to 4.0 condition would cost about $1000.
So that’s my pick.
It’s the second appearance of the Riddler. It’s not nearly as pricey as his first appearance two issues earlier, and it also hasn’t been reprinted nearly as often.

Gotta be honest, my friend, I am totally ignorant about comic book prices. A quick search These are pretty low grade. A friend bought an FF 1 for about $1,000 15 or so years ago. Recently got it cleaned and pressed, which bumped it from a 3.0 to a 4.0, so he's looking at quite the windfall. For me, I wouldn't appreciate a thousand dollar comic--I'd much rather have fifty $20 books that I'd never otherwise buy.

Whatever natural wear, tear, and overall honest aging it has is more preferable to me personally. But I don't look at comics as an investment (not that I'm criticizing others that do).

I've been working on this one all day, and I've still got nothing. The concept of spending $1,000 for a comic just seems too crazy for me. In the case of nearly all comics, If it's selling for more than $200, it's not worth it to me. Maybe a critical 1st appearance that really matters to me -- Superman, Batman, the X-Men -- but those books sell for way more than $1,000 anyway.

Love the diversity of choices here! Even those folks who stated they didn't necessarily have a choice or needed to think more, I think that feedback adds to a well-rounded survey of everyone's interests/perspectives. I thought Edo also brought a great example of "I don't nearly need $1,000", but still put some of the money to work for a relatively lower dollar purchase.
The spirit of the question is a little bit from a recollection in my youth of a comic book shop I used to visit in the 80's, and they had this display behind glass of old Silver and Golden age comics for sale. I was very happy with all of the other comics I could afford at the time, but there was still this "wow! can you imagine owning one of these?" awe of a somewhat starstruck kid who never thought they'd ever be able to land something so historic. That feeling actually stayed with me into adulthood, I think it was the early 2000's when I bought my first Golden Age comic book at a local convention, an early Adventure Comics issue with Hourman on the cover. It was $300, by FAR the most I'd ever spent on a comic book but it brought me back to that childhood memory and it was such a surreal moment that I finally owned a small piece of early comicdom history.

Maybe a stupid question, but one of those FF 1’s is described as “pre-owned.”
Are there any comic books on the back-issue market that aren’t pre-owned?

I guess there are lots of choices but I think I'd go with something like a higher graded All-Star Western #10 or a mid-grade Hawkman #4.
A lot of my other choices (at least on my research) are pretty much priced out of my reach.
