DC's Terror Through TimeWritten by Paul Levitz, Karla Pacheco, Tim Seeley and others Art by Peter Nguyen, Juan Doe, Kelley Jones and others Summary: It's Halloween which means it's the perfect season for a horror anthology starring your favorite DC super heroes. Plot: Now, even though these anthology specials tend to be mixed bags I usually love them just for the concept of the anthology itself...but with the ten dollar price tag and only three stories that I actually liked this is the first DC special I just can't recommend. On top of that, although I did enjoy the Supersons story, the Jason Blood feature and the Damian Wayne story I really think that they would have been better served by a larger page count. It's the Halloween season so I think the market could definitely bear a series of specials rather than just one and then these stories could have spread their wings more and really shined. Or barring that they should have kept the story count to just four so each story could have been a bit longer. Art: Although I did feel a bit let down by the price tag of the special new Kelly Jones art very nearly made it worth the cost of admission. As always, he does a fantastic Deadman but I also really enjoyed his Damian Wayne and the monster and acrobatic energy of Robin and Deadman were perfect. Grade:6/10

Read Batman vs Robin # 2. Liked all the magical characters from House of Secrets, House of Mystery, the Witching Hour. Like the mystery behind Alfred's return. Added comments: Yes this is darker than Waid's story in World's Finest but I don't mind as long as the end results are great. For me I just enjoyed having Alfred back (I hope it is him!) and he should have never have been killed. Also seeing all the old characters from my youth like Cain & Abel brought a smile to my face...
Also really liked Namor #1. It is set in the future where Earth has become a Water World scenario. Most of humanity is gone as well as most of the heroes. The story revolves around Marvel's big 3 from the 40s: Namor, Cap and Jim Hammond. Which as a big fan of those 3 heroes I will seek out any stories featuring them.

I did really like the use of the House of Secrets and the various horror hosts but I much preferred the lighter tone of Worlds Finest to the darker tone here...and it seems like Alfred is the demon guy if I read the shadow he cast at the end which is disappointing.

Star Wars: Visions #1Story and Art by Takashi Okazaki Summary: Before meeting a Sith Enchantress, the Ronin and his Droid encounter a Jedi Master in the peaks of a snowy mountain. Plot/Art: "The Duel" was hands down my favorite short from last year's Star Wars anthology cartoon, Visions, but I never knew until I picked up the book that it was written and designed by Takashi Okazaki who for those of you who didn't know was the writer/artist behind Afro-Samurai which is one of my favorite manga of all time. And while looking back on the short it's easy to see Okazaki's influence it's incredibly obvious in this issue as the art, especially in the flowy hair of the Jedi, just oozes with his sketchy, energetic look. Like the short this prequel comic is based on what really makes it sing is the fact that it so heavily homages the films of Akira Kurosawa, which was a huge influence on George Lucas in creating Star Wars so it's a great way to come full circle. I think the only negative is that this is sadly just a one shot! I'd love for Okazaki to tell a full series about his Ronin, or barring that I wish Marvel would turn this into an anthology book much like the cartoon series was and allow other creators who you wouldn't imagine being associated with the galaxy far, far away to tell stories with out fear of continuity. Grade:10/10I can't remember if you saw/enjoyed the Star Wars: Visions cartoon from last year Confessor but if you did this is definitely a book worth tracking down.

Chilling Adventures of SalemWritten by Cullen Bunn Art by Dan Schoening Summary: As Sabrina's familiar, Salem has often been her protector...but what happens when he needs protection of his own? Plot: This newest one shot addition to Archie's amazing but sadly stalled(or defunct?) horror line definitely stands among the best entries. Though more of a straight forward horror book lacking the twist of turning a non-horror story into something else like Afterlife With Archie or Chilling Adventures of Sabrina it is none the less a really great Halloween read. Bunn's characterization of Salem nails that slightly snarky, trickster voice that has always made me love Salem and the plot on Salem freeing pets who had been turned into demons by a warlock had a quick pace and a suitably dark conclusion that evoked an almost Lovecraftian feel. My hope is that this one shot does well and perhaps we'll finally get the end to Archie that was originally solicited nearly ten years ago, but that might be a hope too high. We'll see though. I don't know if you saw this out there shaxper but no archie fan should be with out this issue! Art: Though not as moody as the art of Francesco Francavilla from Afterlife, Schoening does have a very detail oriented style that reminds me a lot of the old horror mags which is a great fit for the story as it's dark, morality play like ending definitely would have felt right at home in Creepy or Eerie. I really loved how scary he made the various stray pets, they were clearly horrifying but without making their proportions feel exaggerated. That level of realism lent the story a much scarier feel than it otherwise would have if Schoening had just done generic monster dogs. Grade:10/10

Thanks for the reminder! I happen to be five minutes from my comic shop right now... Hope they had a copy for you, it was a great read. We got a hold of it just fine. Didn't sit down to read it until today. It was exceptionally well done, but Amber and I had the same reaction at the end: "That's all?" Guess we're used to Bronze Age comics with more panels, more pages, and a lot more story. Modern comics are so...quick.

Modern comics are so...quick. It was definitely a very quick read, it felt like it could have easily been a back up rather than the main feature. Still, they did get Salem's voice down which was something I was a little worried about. Hopefully they do more like this, I used to love the Archie horror books.
