I finally got hold of the TPB of the comic adaptation of Dino De Laurentiis' Flash Gordon movie from 1980, by Bruce Jones and Al Williamson. I'm a gig fan of Williamson's art and I love this movie too, but it's taken me years to find a copy of this at a price I was happy with: they seldom come up for sale here in the UK. I'm really pleased to have tracked this down. Isn't this movie considered one of the worst of all time ?

That movie is all kinds of campy awesomeness! It's fantastic.

Yeah, I thought the 80s Flash Gordon movie was a lot of fun. Maybe it went a bit too far with the deliberate campiness but I think that's a matter of taste. I probably would have preferred a slightly more serious take myself, while recognising that that might have been a tricky thing to pull off by the time of the 1980s, 50 years after the original. They went with a tongue-in-cheek approach and the key is, they did it well, or so I found. Getting Queen to do the soundtrack was a brilliant idea, for example. But the colourful sets and costume designs, much of the casting (e.g. Brian Blessed), etc all came together in an effective way.
Maybe the 60s Batman tv show might be a good comparison. But it occurs to me that the Disney John Carter - a movie I thought did not work at all on any level - might make another interesting comparison - or contrast, rather, though possibly only for me since I know many members here disagree about that movie and think it's fine.
Not sure about this adaptation, though. I love Al Williamson's art and Williamson loved Flash Gordon, but the movie isn't exactly the Flash Gordon he loved, so I can't help but wonder how he felt about the whole thing: Was he enthusiastic to do anything FG-related? Or was it just a job he couldn't afford to turn down? I'd be curious to hear what he had to say about it in later years, if anything.

Flash Gordon is campy and silly but it’s not within a thousand miles of the worst movie ever. Anyone who would say that has never seen Manos the Hands of Fate.

Okay, discussions about Flash Gordon don’t exactly come up often with my passengers, friends, acquaintances or family members, but on the rare occasion it has been discussed, I’ve only ever heard positive things.

I know that Williamson does talk about this adaptation in the Art of Al Williamson book from the mid-80s, and I've been meaning to re-read that section after I read this adaptation. It's been so long though that I can't recall what his feelings about it were off the top of my head. I'll report back in a few days.

He really hated the movie, script, casting, etc. I admire him all the more for not letting it affect the incredible job he did on it.

Got a small order from one of my favorite ebay sellers-only 5 books. Relevant to a conversation elsewhere, all 5 books had a starting bid of 99 cents, 2 of which 1 won at that price, and another at $1.25. The other two (JLA 20, Our Army 181) went for a little more but the JLA 20 was the highest at $7.50. All in for all 5 books with shipping and tax included was under $20 (though I got a discount on shipping because one of an error on my last order from them as one of the books had the wrong inventory sticker on it and wasn't the book I bid on, which they refunded me on no hassle and gave me a discount on the next order). JLof A #20 Our Army at War #181 Green Lantern 97 World's Finest 244 and one of the small handful of Marvel books Joe Kubert worked on, doing some inks over his son Adam, Wolverine 82 -M

World's Finest 244
These 80 page Dollar books are my favourite DCs from the bronze-age. I'm currently sniffing out the House of Mystery 80 pagers, #251-259.

Dang it, lady-- when it comes to Bronze-age comics, you must be my long-lost twin sister.
