This Superman Double Double #3 from 1970 had some great things going for it. Although I have another #3, this one has 4 different books inside. It's also in VF+, my best graded copy.

I still haven't paid, I need to be invoiced first, which knowing them, will take about a week. But no, those are base prices, before discount. I didn't know that's how they do it now. I've noticed the Hardcovers are on sale too and spotted one by IDW....
If you want to get it cheaper, you can wait, unless it sells out, it will come down in price. Here's the timetable: *30% off all Trade Paperbacks and CGC's from Sept 13-19th *35% off all Trade Paperbacks and CGC's from Sept 20-26th *40% off all Trade Paperbacks and CGC's from Sept 27-30th

+1 to the CGC stash. This is Yelena Belova's first full appearance as BW. Got this at a bargain price (less than a raw NM copy).

So today was the quarterly Jim & Dan's Comic & Toy Show over on the campus of Wright State University. Dan is one of my con kith, so I get to his shows whenever I can. I've been purging a lot of books lately, and I decided with the market so crazy for Dave Stevens stuff that it was time to take advantage of it and move on from a handful of Dave Stevens covers I owned, so I had talked to Dan prior to the show and we had made a deal in principal for those books, so I brought them today and the sale pretty much funded most of what I brought home (I had a little bit of walk around money in my pocket in addition to what I got for the books, but most of that came home with me). Since I was playing with house money, I looked at it as an opportunity to maybe get a couple of bigger books that had been on my list in addition to my regular dollar bin diving. My top target was a Hawkman #1, but I didn't find one at a price I liked. I had considered a 2.0 from Lonestar about a month ago, and they were asking about $50 for it, but the only copy I found of Hawkman #1 that wasn't slabbed was one I put at about a 2.5-3.0 but they were asking $100 for it, which is more than what I was seeing elsewhere for that book, so I passed. I didn't see any copies of Brave & Bold 34 or Blazing Combat 1, which were the other 2 in my top 3 to look for, nor any copies of the Conan the Rogue or Conan: The Ravagers Out of Time OGNs which are the last 2 Marvel Conan books (aside from Saga reprints which I am not collecting) that I don't have, so I decided to just look around and see what I could find at a price that I liked. Maybe a Toth book, maybe an early Kubert, or some other book that fit with stuff I am collecting. I looked at a couple of lower grade copies of JLA 21 (1st SA JSA), in the $50ish range, but they were both really beat and I didn't get the best vibes from either dealer, so I passed. I almost pulled the trigger on a Dale Evans #4 which is a 50s era Toth book that Dan had on his wall, but I ended up going in a different direction. But if Dan still has that next month at Champion City, my hometown show, I might pick it up then. All the while I was looking at wall books to see if I could find the one I wanted to bring home, I was scouting and digging through dollar bins and just scoping the room. One of the prominent trends at this show was cash discounts-several dealers were offering better prices or deals if you paid cash rather than used a credit card. Some as much as 20-30% off, some buy 2 get 1 free, and many more knocking down the prices if you were going to pay cash. I did wind up taking advantage of some of those deals later in the day. So I hit up a lot of my Con kith who are shop owners or local creators at the show, and shopped a lot of their dollar bins-Dan's table featured 8 long boxes of a fresh collection that was all dollar bin fare that I found a bunch of goodies in, Paul Lee of Are U Game had several long boxes of dollar books, Bell Book & Comic is another local shop who was there and I found stuff in their bins as well. Some of my best finds were in the dollar bins of Dave Aikins, artist who has done extensive work in comics, product design (Sponge Bob, Dora the Explorer, Paw Patrol etc.) and other related areas, and whom I have a couple of commissions from (including a very cool Biotron piece on a Micronauts blank cover) and whom I always spend time chatting with when I see him. I got a bunch of dollar stuff form him, but I kept coming back to his wall books. There were a couple that were books I have had on my radar for a while. And that's ended up getting my "big book of the day, but Dave being Dave, he made me a deal and through in 3 other books I was going to get with the book I chose for what would have been the price of the book alone. So what did I settle on? Justice League of America #75-the intro of Black Canary to Earth 1 and the iconic fishnet cover... and these were the three books Dave threw in... Two other issues of JLA I needed to fill holes and a copy of Flash 215, with a Neal Adams cover and a Kubert inked Flash reprint as the back up I'll post more pics of books I got in subsequent posts... -M

So the other non-dollar books I picked up were these... The dealer that was doing $10 books at buy 2 get 1 free had some cool stuff, and I picked up these three just before I left the show for the day... a lower grade Hawk & Dove #1 one of the King Faraday I Spy issues of Showcase... and a gorgeous copy of Angel & the Ape #3 the only other priced books I got, were a pair of $4 books... one of the Ten Nights of the Beast issues of Batman and a Dell Uncle Scrooge... dollar bin diving in subsequent posts -M

Most of what I got from the dollar bins was DC run filler, and for the sake of transparency, one dealer I got stuff from was technically $2 books but it was buy 15 for $20 and then he threw in a couple extra, so it pretty much worked out to a dollar a book anyways. So here's some of what I got... I filled in the issues I was missing form the Byrne team up era of Action Comics plus a handful of pre-Crisis issues from a couple different dealers...these came from Dave and Paul's tables. a couple of random Bronze DC from Dave's boxes... I also grabbed a few more of the early Ordway Adventures of Superman issues I was missing to recreate that run, I've been on an Ordway Supes kick and want to get those early issues agian if I can do it on the cheap. I found 2 from Dave and one from Bell Book. and a couple from Paul's dollar boxes, the last issue of the Aquaman mini and the only modernish issue I picked up today, an issue of Batman Urban Legends which was a well done Batman anthology tha ran for 2 years and ended about a year or so ago More to come... -M

I found some Batman Adventures in Dave's dollar boxes-I already had a #25 but it has a gorgeous Toth pin up in it, so I couldn't resist picking up a second copy... I found another issue of Adventures at one of the new dealers I found today, along with a Moench/Jones era issue of Batman I needed to fill a hole. I almost got the JLA 21 from this dealer, but ended up passing in favor of the 75 from Dave which was a much nicer presenting book. From Dan's dollar bin, I found 3 of the 6 issues I needed to complete the '89 Blackhawk run, so three more to go... also from Dan, 3 more issues of the '86 Blue Beetle series off my list... One of the very few Marvels I picked up today was this Kirby Cap from Dave's boxes... Speaking of Captains, I also knocked off 4 more of the '87 Captain Atom series off my list-I now have the first 32 issues with no gaps and a handful through the end. I got these as part of the 15 for $20 package from a new vendor I didn't know... more to come... -M

It's really beat up, but I couldn't pass up this DC 100 Page Super Spectacular for a buck... I wound up picking up a chunk of Flash and GL filler issues from various dealers through the course of the day-I've been reading a lot of different eras of both characters recently, so I guess that influenced by purchasing choices today... more to come... -M

I found the 2 earliest Marvel Epic Groo issues I was missing in Paul's dollar bins... I'm making progress on Groo, but a lot of the later Epic issues still elude me. A couple of issues from Hex (I think I need 3 after these 2) from Paul's dollar bins and a quarter of more classic Jonah Hex out of a new vendor's dollar bins... and to go with the Batman Adventures, I found a couple of issues of Justice League Adventures in Dave's boxes... The only other "Marvel" book I got was a copy of Phantom 2040 #1 which features Steve Ditko pencils inked by Bill Reinhold, which I got from Dave. Bill is a friend of Dave's so I got to hear some anecdotes about Bill's experiences inking form Ditko's layouts on this book and the challenges of trying to adjust one's inking style to fit the penciller you are working with. This led to a larger discussion about inking overall, and it was interesting to get Dave's perspectine on it. more to come... -M

Last batch... I finally completed my Question run a month or so ago (took me a while to get an affordable copy of that pesky Rorschach issue) so now I am turning my sights on the Question Quarterly series, got the first of 5 today... Also got a handful of late pre-Crisis Supes from the Bell Book dollar bins... and knocked 3 ore off my Baxter Titan list...trying to fill in up through Perez's return to the book and subsequent departure in the mid-50 issue range. Speaking of filling in Titans, I found a large chunk of the Titans Spotlight series form the mid 80s in Paul's dollar bins... And every show I try to add a Toth and/or Kubert piece to my collection, I got one of each this time around, both from dollar bins... Toth's cover to Marvel's Zorro #12 and Joe's cover for Vigilante #27... and that's a wrap for today's Jim & Dan Show haul. I have a small order coming in the mail (featuring another Toth book) and Champion City is the last weekend of October, but those might be my last gets for the year, we'll see how budget holds up and if I purge anything else to add to the war chest. -M
