Possibly my most ambitious Hardcover acquisition to date, for the esteemed Mr Rags. Had to carefully edit out risque bits to make it CCF friendly so I made a collage.
This collection has several things going for it.
- It's the complete two-volume slipcased edition of Harvey Kurtzman and Will Elder's three-decade contribution to Playboy Magazine.
- Limited to 500 editions and printed only once by Dark Horse in 2000
- The 1st volume reprints the first 45 stories (1962-1970), many for the first time ever.
- The 2nd volume reprints for the first and only time the last 62 stories (1970-1988).
- Every last strip is collected here, in a pink-leather hardcover set, with matching slipcase.
- A special tip-in plate is part of this special limited run of 500 sets, signed by Annie editor and Playboy founder, Hugh Hefner.
Cost a bit but I don't care when it's a gift for someone I'm married to, plus I think it will retain its value....win:win

I wonder if this series could be made today.

You mean Fast Willie Jackson? I don't see why not. It might just adapt to 2023 if it was, just like Archie has.
But I have no idea who owns the rights now. The 1976-77 series hasn't been collected as far as I know...
Whenever I see the cover for #1, I hear the tv theme for Good Times in my head....

That Playboy "Little Annie Fanny" set is a nice looking thing, @hots. I'm totally unfamiliar with the strip (no pun intended), but I'm guessing it'll be a lot like some of Wally Wood's naughtier things, like Malice in Wonderland and The Wizard of Ooz.

She's the creation of some members of the usual gang of idiots at Mad magazine. She's risque and rendered quite sumptuously, and in Vol 1 for example, we see caricatures of the media figures of the day, including the Kennedys, the Beatles, J.D. Salinger, Kirk Douglas, Malcolm X and many more. The art might be the most slaved over in the history of comics: each panel was painstakingly painted.
The first collection was done way back in 1966, the Hardcover was 10' x 14' thereabouts, or treasury sized but the art and production is really gorgeous. Before I came across the collected edition, I came across actual Annie pullouts from Playboy Magazine, they averaged 2-7 pages and those got me interested...

It's Kurtzman and Elder, so more contemporary satire than fantasy. Each episode has Annie interacting with some contemporary issue or personality stand-in: advertising, pop art, James Bond, Hollywood, "sick" comedy... At the end, though, she usually ends up naked. The art is pretty amazing though, but there was an elaborate process to create each page. Jack Davis, Paul Coker, and Frank Frazetta pitched in periodically; Russ Heath pretty regularly for a while. Bill Stout assisted for a bit. Not Harvey's best work, but often funny and--his major concern--well-paying.

Sound great...and right up my street, frankly. T*ts, comics and mid-20th Century history, what's not to like? You have to see Woods " Big Bang" series. Yikes ! No, I can't say I've even heard of it. I can't even find a trace of it on Google.

The creator and publisher, Bertram Fitzerald Jr. held the rights until his death in 2017. Since then, I have no idea who has the rights now. They could have been retained by the family, or could have been sold after the settlement of the estate. Whomever does have the rights likely also has the rights to the Golden Legacy series, also published by Fitzgerald. The Golden Legacy books were still being published as late as 2014, and their "zombie" website is still up, but hasn't been updated since 2014 and still lists him as the publisher.
Fitzgerald was very protective of his IP, since he had already been bamboozled out of it by a fraudulent publisher in the 1980's. He sued and won, but the guy skipped and never paid the judgement against him.

Got a bunch of money and giftcards for my birthday and decided to go green Very excited for the Savage Dragon collection, been wanting the series in full color for a while and it looks like the Ultimate Collection might be a reoccurring purchase every year along with the Paperback versions of the IDW TMNT collection

I like the idea a satirical comic like this and as a writer Kurtzman was certainly capable of doing it justice, but the cartooning style used plus the painting technique isn't a combination that appeals to me visually - which is a problem given the concept of the title character. If the whole thing had been drawn by a Russ Heath or a Frazetta I'd be ordering one online right now. But I should probably give it a try sometime, not having seen it for many years and never having read it in depth.
