I had never heard of Reno Jones or Gunhawks until seeing this post. Some think this 70's series was an inspiration for 2013's Django Unchained movie which was the highest grossing Quentin Tarantino film that starred Jaime Fox.

So there are certain comics that I will always buy more of when I'm out in the wild, not for collectibility, but sentimentality. Of these, the ones I always enjoy rebuying the most (when I can find them cheap) is Batman #426-429 (the Death in the Family storyline). #428 was the first comic I ever read and enjoyed as a kid, I quickly became obsessed with the entire storyline, Jason Todd may well be my favorite character in all of comicdom, and those Mignola covers! Anyway, the prices for these were on the rise well before the pandemic speculator bubble began, so I haven't gotten a new copy in quite some time. Then I stumbled upon this beauty on ebay a few weeks back: It's a digest-sized collection of all four parts, sporting the cover of the issue I started with, and it's BRAZILLIAN! So...frickin'...cool!

Not only is the basic plot identical, more importantly Tarantino said it was! There was a comic book adaptation of Django Unchained, and in the intro, Tarantino wrote about his love of western comics - specifically citing Gunhawks as the best of them and saying that he always thought it should have been a movie:

RIO BRAVO is currently on my short list of wanted DVDs.
Rick Nelson is so cool in there! It's almost a pity he far preferred music to acting. He was such a natural.

So a week or so ago, I was cruising through ebay listings and stopped on a seller who had some auction items I was interested in, and I clicked on view all items from seller and started scrolling. The auction for the initial item I was interested in went to crazytown on the prices, but I did find a few books with BIN prices I added to my watchlist, and then received offers on a couple of them making them well within my price range. One was a red dress cover MWGallaher posted in my devil with a red dress on thread, a second was another red dress cover I hadn't seen before. Third was a P. Craig Russell work I wasn't aware of before this, and last was a very affordable Gladstone EC reprint. So first up the book the esteemed Mr. Gallaher posted and that I now own... and the other red dress cover, from Simon and Kirby's Black Magic mag (though at this point I think only Joe Simon was still contributing material to it, he did the cover, Bob Powell did all the interior art; this is cover dated Sept-Oct '61 so Jack was back at Marvel by this point) That, PCR book, the Starblaze volume of his adaptation of Thief of Baghdad... and finally the Gladstone reprint of Frontline Combat #4 with contributions by Kurtzman, John Severin, Wally Wood, Jack Davis and others. -M

The red dress covers are a thing. You're a braver man than me , @mrp. I don't buy just any cover with a red dress and I hold no ambition to own them all. There's a weird alchemy of affordability and appeal that factor in as to whether I get the book or not (the effective use of red on a cover can make a cover very eye-catching and appealing, so while red is not my favorite color, it is one present in a lot of covers I find appealing, and price is certainly a factor-the pricier books I get with a red dress cover have to have some other factor besides the dress-usually the artist involved-Eisner, Baker, Kubert, etc. for me to be willing to plunk down the cash). But collecting these kind of covers scratches a few collector's itches of mine-first I want my collection to be uniquely me, not a generic collection any collector could have, but something that says this is mine an nobody else's. Second I like exploring and discovering new things. My "nostalgia" for comics is not for certain artifacts in comic book form, characters, or stories, it's for the feeling of excitement and discovery in finding something new and interesting that comics provided for me as a kid and adolescent. I cannot get that feeling revisiting old favorites, I can get it by continuing to explore new avenues in comics and these covers range in genres and eras far outside the typical box I operated in. -M

Got the ultra-rare The Warriors: Jailbreak TPB. Very few of these were produced. Now have the entire series and both TPBs.
