I'm not sure why, but I just bought 11 volumes of Usagi Yojimbo in tpb form. I say I'm not sure why, because I am also buying them all as individual issues, so I don't really need the collections. But I couldn't pass it up - it was $20 for all 11 volumes shipped. Too good a deal to pass up. I guess someone is going to be getting some Usagi Yojimbo from me for Christmas this year. Wow. That's an incredible deal! I am ridiculously jealous.
I mean, it's no NFL SuperPro 8, but nothing really is... outside of Street Poet Ray.

We might as well close the thread, because I just made the ultimate purchase. The only spoiler was that you spoiled my appetite.

It was tough letting my Fantagraphics run go, it was only about 1/3 complete, and I bought the slipcase hardcover set, and needed to trim the collection back, so all but #1 got sold off. They're super cool covers though and were fun to flip through even if I had the HC's to read.

Took my wife and kids to an amusement park yesterday, and afterwards we were going to meet my best friend and his girlfriend for dinner. We arrived at the restaurant about 20 minutes early, and I looked across the parking lot and saw a collectibles shop that I'd never noticed before; since we had a little time, my wife graciously let me run in to check the place out. It was heavy into gaming and sportscards, but they had a nice little selection of comics, from which I pulled the following:
$14 total for the six books: $5 for Incredible Hulk #124, $3 each for Hulk #255 and Annual #6, and $1 each for Hulk #350 and MTU Annuals #2 & 3. The #124 is complete, with nice pages, firm staples and no serious defects, so I was really surprised to see it so cheap; he had a few others that I was interested in getting, but the prices were a little higher than I wanted to pay.

So I made some bids on an online auction for the first time in a looooong time this past week, not ebay, but the Lonestar online monthly auction. I had bids in on a handful of Frazetta prints, a Conan the Barbarian #23, an issue of Amra, a lot of DC war books with Kubert covers, and Savage Sword of Conan #6. The auctions all ended while I was at work and I got outbid at the last minute on all of the lots except 1, so I am now the owner of a fairly nice copy of SSOC #6 got it for a good price, but shipping made it a bit pricey. Shipping wouldn't have been bad if I had won a couple of the lots, but only winning one, it skews the price of the item. Ah well, live and learn. Still a nice book though. -M

I found myself at an estate sale with my wife on Saturday. Sales like this are more her thing than mine, but I may be more interested in them after this. Just before we left, I found what remained of the late homeowner's childhood comic book collection. Someone was going thru it just as I entered the room, and I saw that she picked up an issue of Strange Adventures and a couple of other things that I would have bought. As it was, I left with:
Hit Comics #56, Jan. 1949 - a Kid Eternity cover & story by Pete Riss, and other features, mostly humor, including one by Klaus Nordling, and a story about a crusading female DA done by Alice Kirkpatrick. Buster Brown Comic Book #24, 1945 - a western cover & story by Ray Willner and another western story by Sy Barry, and a humor story about Smilin' Ed and his gang from the Buster Brown radio show. The "gang" included Froggy the Gremlin, and Smilin' Ed is the one who introduced the catchphrase, "Plunk your magic twanger, Froggy!" Four Color #283 featuring Zane Grey's King of the Royal Mounted, July 1950 - newspaper comic strip reprints from 1942 by Jim Gary. This is considered #3 in the "King of the Royal Mounted" series. Walt Disney's Comics & Stories #126 [vol.11, no.6], Mar 1951 - a 10-page Barks story with Donald & Uncle Scrooge, a couple of other stories and some Mickey & Donald daily strip reprints. (coverless) Walt Disney's Comics & Stories #203 [vol.17, no.11], Aug 1957 - a 10-page Barks story with Donald but no Scrooge, an 8-page Fallberg/Murry Mickey Mouse story, a couple of other stories and strip reprints. (coverless) Donald Duck #26, Nov 1952 - a 23-page [!] Barks story featuring Donald and his nephews and the first appearance of Witch Hazel, and a 9-page Barks story with Donald, the nephews, Daisy, Grandma and Gyro Gearloose. 32 pages, all Barks!
Total for all of this: $9.
These are the first Barks comics I've ever owned. I'm stoked!

Kid Eternity CRACKS ME UP! I've only read two or three stories because of reprints in those 100-Page Giant (only 60 cents!) from the early 1970s, but they are great! Kid Eternity can call ANYBODY, even mythical characters, EVEN FICTIONAL CHARACTERS!
Anything can happen.
I like the one where he calls up the persistent cop from Les Miserables (because the dude can track down ANYBODY) and they catch the bad guy, but the dude from Les Miserables starts whomping the crap out of the guy! So Kid Eternity has to send him back to heaven (or wherever).
There's also a story where he summons the discus thrower (you know, the statue dude?) and he throws the discus and knocks the fleeing bad guy on his butt so they can catch him.

OK, here's my latest Spidey purchase: I won it Sunday over at the Heritage auction site. It hasn't arrived yet, but I feel the need to share -- and possibly to show off. For those of you keeping score at home -- I need just five more issues of Amazing (1, 3, 4, 8 & 11) for a complete run. I also need two annuals (1 & 2). I have been enjoying everyone's purchases... Peace & Love, Tom

I think everyone knows that Ditko Spider-Man is my favorite comic EVER in all of comic books, but #18 and #19 really stand out to me as one of the best little storyline in the whole run. OMG! The way it mixes Peter's schoolmates with Aunt May being sick (this was already a cliché as early as #18!) with Jameson and Betty Brant, in addition to the Human Torch, Montana, Fancy Dan, the Ox and the Sandman!
That sequence in #18 where Sandman is chasing Spidey down the street and Spidey is all "no, I can't fight you!" is one of the best sequences of the Marvel Silver Age.
Stan and Steve at their best!

Amazing Spider-Man #18 was one of the most influential comics of my life.I had begun reading Marvels about 6 months prior and had been reading DC for 2 years at that point in time. That Spider-Man issue just blew my little 10 year old mind. All the bad breaks piling up on Peter Parker and spending the whole issue avoiding a fight was something I didn't think possible in a comic.A key issue that made me a comic fanatic back then and Spidey became my favorite for the rest of the decade
