Batman / Superman: World's Finest #6Written by Mark Waid Art by Travis Moore Summary: Displaced in time Robin goes back to his roots and joins a circus to get by on his own, but his past returns as crime strikes the bigtop! Plot: Wrapping up the demon Nezha arc Waid gives us a Dick Grayson focused epilogue that really brings the golden age feel as Dick solves a crime under the Big Top. And while the story itself is an absolute blast with great moments for Dick and even Batman and Superman when they showed up I couldn't help feeling a little lost as to why Dick was even sent to the past to begin with. Maybe it's just my modern sensibilities but when Dick was lost in time I thought there was going to be some important reason for sending him back, but instead Waid just gave us a one off and then quickly wrapped it up with Superman and Batman stopping by and returning to the present like it was nothing. And while there's nothing terribly wrong with that given how fun it was seeing Dick solve a low stakes crime mystery on his own it just felt anti-climatic in terms of what went on before. Also, I might be totally wrong but I had fully thought this was announced as just a six issue miniseries...but this had a "coming next month" blurb and when I looked into it there was a tease for next issue featuring Johnny Thunder! I had no idea this was continuing and even though this ending wasn't perfect I'm pretty pumped to see what happens next. Art: Even though Moore's style is noticeably different than Dan Mora's he has a smooth, clear style that really had a lot of warmth to it which fit this golden age feeling Dick Grayson story just perfectly. Grade:8/10

Looks like a small download this week... - Batman: The Knight 8 - Nightwing 95 - Daredevil 2 How's the Knight going? I read the first few issues and thought it was decently written but I just couldn't get past the idea that I didn't need yet another Batman origin.

After a long streak of unbroken issues I decided to drop the title, the IDW stories weren't bad but they just weren't hitting like they used to for me.

The IDW books are the first I have bought in single issues as they came out since the early Fantagraphics stuff that I was picking up in hs and college. I had been a trade reader once I got back into Usagi, since I had missed so much, and the IDW move felt like a good jumping on point for me. It is probably the last book I would cut if I were trimming down my pull because it is the only one that is consistently enjoyable and has longevity. -M

My favorites were always the quiet moments like in Kite Story, Jizo, Potter's Tale or Taiko and I just wasn't getting that vibe from the IDW stories I read though I admittedly bowed out shortly after the Tengu War.

It's okay but like you said.. it's another Batman origin. That was kind of my feeling on it, we've already had dozens of stories about his training and start as Batman and nothing I saw in the first three issues looked to be adding anything new. It wasn't poorly written by any stretch of the word, just not very interesting to me as a long time reader. I'm not even opposed to new writers doing new takes on the origin as I actually really enjoyed Zero Year for instance, but it has to be something that feels really new to keep my attention and this just felt like something back from the early days of Legends of the Dark Knight...only with more issues.

Nightwing #95Written by Tom Taylor Art by Bruno Redondo Summary: With the help of the entire Batfamily, the Titans and his various Superfriends, Dick sets out to take down corruption once and for all. Plot: Like Waid's World's Finest, Taylor's run on Nightwing continues to deliver solid and entertaining, meat and potatoes super hero stories. While there's nothing earth-shattering about assembling all his superfriends and family to do a clean sweep of crime in a single night it has a wholesome, fun feel to it that makes you want to really believe it'll work. It's a comic, so when Blockbuster goes after the orphanage that Dick set up you know his plans for clearing out the city in a single bound will collapse like a deck of cards but that feeling of optimism just before that was definitely worth the price of admission in my books. Seeing the Batfamily together and not hating eachother, getting quips from the various Titans and the relationship advice from Batwoman was all just so fun that I can almost forgive the beating and identity reveal at the end. Well, almost anyway. I really don't like Blockbuster learning that Dick is Nightwing, it's just the cheap reveal that you just know won't be allowed to stick so any consequences will be short lived at best. Would it be cool if a villain really did learn a hero's identity? Absolutely, and if this were a creator owned work I'd be really interested in the drama that would create...but it's not creator owned so any surprise reveal like this just means the next guy has to come up with some convoluted story explaining why Blockbuster forgot who Nightwing was, which is just a waste of an issue. Sometimes you just gotta color in the lines, it seems boring but you can paint solid pictures that way none the less. Art: Speaking of solid pictures, Redondo really continues to steal the show here. With the various Superfriends taking down different threats around the city Redondo gets plenty of use in showing off his usual acrobatic flair for action. On top of that his fine line work also got to shine here as well as I really appreciate the detail in up-close facial expressions this time around which really sold the tension of needing to move on Blockbuster all in one night. Grade:7/10

Black Adam #3Written by Christopher Priest Art by Rafael Sandoval Summary: As Malik tries to save Adam's life in the hospital, Black Adam battles a series of Mesopotamian gods in the afterlife. Plot: One thing I always say about Priest is that you never know what he's going to do with a book, and this issue of Black Adam definitely illustrates that and beyond as its probably the most experimental story I've seen from him. Half the issue(and the most linear and easy to enjoy) was devoted to Malik and Black Adam’s apparent long-time friend and handler Yigal Blaustein bickering over whether Black Adam is dead and what their next step should be. It's light hearted and fun and the mystery of Adam's disease is definitely compelling even if it doesn't really go much further than in the previous issues. The other half of the issue is where things get weird as Adam battles a couple of Mesopotamian gods in their version of the afterlife even while commenting that he was raised believing in the Egyptian pantheon to which the gods respond, "Well maybe you're just feeling the effects of a lack of oxygen." and then Adam battles on. The action is fun, and if one is into that sort of thing the meditation on what the after life actually is or if it exists at all is an interesting thing for a guy powered by gods to confront...but it doesn't exactly mesh well with the earlier half making the issue feel really disjointed. There's still enough here to keep me interested so I'm locked in but it could fall pretty fast. Art: Although there isn't much to the back grounds in the afterlife scenes making it difficult to discern motion at times, Sandoval still manages to really sell the action. He gives each punch a real sense of weight to them, and his faces are amazingly detailed making the emotions in the quieter scenes really sing. Grade: 6.5/10
