BATMAN #125. Written by Chip Zdarsky. Art by Jorge Jimenez.
Bruce Wayne is having nightmares. Gotham City billionaires are being murdered. In the main story he deals with Tim being shot and finds out the Penguin is dying. The Penguin sets Batman up to look like Batman poisons him right before he dies...
The backup by Zdarsky and Belen Ortega stars Catwoman as she deals with the fall out of the Penguin's death. She is asked to track down his children (?) before his will is read in one week.
Zdarsky's run on Batman starts off with a neat twist and looks like it will be as memorable as his run on Daredevil. This issue was just fantastic. Hopefully he can maintain this high quality. The art is phenomenal.

CAPTAIN AMERICA SENTINEL OF LIBERTY #2. Written by Collin Kelly and Jackson Lanzing. Art by Carmen Carnero.
Steve Rogers follows a trail that leads to Germany. Meanwhile Bucky goes to Madripoor and tries to find his own answers in one of the casinos.
Steve uses old friends like the WWII Destroyer and new friends to help him track down an organization that holds a secret about his shield. It leads him to Germany where members from 5 different evil teams (Hydra, AIM, etc) calling themselves the Tithe attack him. Bucky tracks down an old friend who I didn't know was still alive - Peggy Carter.
As I said last week both Cap books are really good. I like how the writers "get" Sam, Steve and Bucky and make them distinct characters. All 3 characters are on different adventures that "fit" their personalities.
I am excited that we are finally getting some decent Capt America titles.

AMAZING SPIDER-MAN #5. Written by Zeb Wells. Art by John Romita Jr.
The conclusion of the first arc. Next issue is #900.
Mixed feelings. I liked JR Jr art for this arc. I liked his fight with Tombstone and Digger. However I really am not happy with his separation from MJ (and her having kids?) plus the return of bad luck Peter Parker.
I'm not sure I will be sticking around with this title after next issue. Because I really hate the pathetic Peter Parker persona. I feel Spidey has moved beyond that and have no desire to see him regress into that personality again.

KING CONAN #6. Written by Jason Aaron. Art by Mahmud Asrar.
3 years ago this creative team started the new Conan series at Marvel with a 12 part story. They get to conclude Conan's story at Marvel with this final issue.
This mini series started a little rough IMO but this issue had a nice ending. Conan's 3 year run at Marvel has been uneven with some great arcs and some mediocre arcs.
So now Conan starts over at Titan Comics in 2023.

The art is phenomenal. While I like the air of mystery, and the dynamic set up by Penguin was interesting I really didn't enjoy the thrust that this is going to be yet another story about breaking Batman. I wish Zdardsky had taken a page from Waid's World's Finest and worked to make Batman whole again. I want a well adjusted Batman with a strong supporting cast that works well together to be good heroes, not another story about some villain out for Batman's blood pushing him to the brink and whittling down his support.

Legion of X #3 Written by Si Spurrier Art by Jan Bazaldua and Federico Blee
What Happened Before: Mutants have organized and live together now on the living island of Krakoa. Nightcrawler is one of the Ruling Council of Krakoa and recently formulated a philosophy for the mutants of Krakoa to deal with their new-found immortality without giving in to self-destructive behaviour. Placed within the Mind of David Haller, the mutant known as Legion, Nightcrawler and his Legionaries/Legionnaires (both terms are used) will protect the mutants of Krakoa from themselves. Nightcrawler and his Legion are currently chasing both a rogue mutant called Switch, who has been possessing other mutants against their will (and who also recently has shown an aptitude for magic) as well as a missing god as requested by Arakko.
Plot: Pixie manages to trap Switch, but the missing god case is more difficult. Things become even more complicated as it turns out that (as probably every reader already figured out) the missing god is the source of Switch new magical powers and the two cases are connected.
The Good: I like Pixie's trick to trap Switch. I also like most of the characters in this series (Cortez and Forget-Me-Not have been mostly background so far though). And Spurrier couldn't resist to let Pixie make a comment on Magneto doing a much better Gandalf impression than the missing god (not the cleverest of jokes, but it made me smile).
The Bad: It's moving pretty slowly so far and the reveal of Switch being an acolyte of the missing god is a non-reveal. Also the missing god is shown constantly in shadows, which would imply that it would be someone we know and its horns, collar and smile look very much like it's Loki (though it has wings, so maybe not).
Overall: Still liking it, though it could speed up a little and give a bit of focus on the rest of the cast (though the cast is quite big, so maybe sticking with Nightcrawler, Legion, Blindfold, Pixie, Juggernaut and newcomer Zsen is the better move).
