Definitely a big disappointment. At least we got a good long run from him. Well, long anyway. It was only good for about 60% of his time on the book.
Cei-U! Okay, maybe 75%...
Why not concede that it was closer to 76%?

I think the whole run was great, though the 2nd half would have been better with Ben instead of She-Hulk. And if he had continued inking himself.

The Hernandez Brothers leaving Mister X: Seth came up with some marvellous artwork after they left but the Motter's writing was all over the place and the series as a whole never recovered. Motter's revised final issue, written several years after the original published version, was an improvement but not enough to get him out of the corner he'd painted himself into. I only recently read the complete series and this difference in the writing between the Hernandez issues and Motter's cannot be overstated. Jaime's art on that series is beautiful. It may not match the amazing poster designs of Paul Rivoche, but if you're a Love and Rockets fan, you can see the same influences found in those early L&R sci-fi stories. I believe they released the four issues as a standalone book called The Return of Mister X, which I would recommend in a heartbeat. I share your sentiments about Motter's writing, and didn't find it much better on Terminal City. Michael Lark's art is nice, but I've seen him do better. There was actually a second volume of the Mister X series written by rock critic, Jeffrey Morgan, with art by British artists Shane Oakley and D'Israeli. I haven't read it myself, but it exists.

In approximately chronological order: * Ditko leaving Spider-Man and Dr. Strange * Wood leaving Daredevil and, much later, All-Star Comics * Kirby leaving FF and Thor
* Wrightson leaving Swamp Thing * Byrne leaving X-Men and, later, Alpha Flight * Gerber leaving Defenders and Howard the Duck * Andru leaving Spider-Man * Wolfman and Colan leaving Dracula * Thomas leaving the three Conan titles * DeMatteis and Zeck leaving Captain America * Ordway leaving Infinity Inc. * Stern leaving Dr. Strange and Avengers * Perez leaving New Teen Titans and, later, Avengers * Tony Harris leaving Starman * Busiek leaving Avengers I'm sure I could think of others but these guys are who immediately came to mind when I saw the thread topic. Cei-U! I summon the ends of several eras! * Tony Harris leaving Starman WHAT? I'm just now reading it for the first time...

Don't worry. Eventually, they settle on a pretty good replacement in Peter Snejbjerg.

Not that I didn't like Harris, but I actually looked forward to Snejbjerg as I loved his art on other books.

Oh, I can't agree to that!
So we'll have to disagree to agree to disagree to ... this is starting to sound like one of those things they used to make computers explode with in 1960s tv shows. Although, I suppose it's more of an infinite loop than a logical contradiction.

Added to that was the death of Archie Goodwin, who was a great mentor to Robinson that seemed to leave him at a loss. Is is anybody in American corporate comics more underrated than Goodwin?

Peter David leaving the Hulk. Especially after he finally got paired with really good artists again after the abomination (pun intended) of the Sharpe/Medina era. The Hulk was David at his best, and he had more story left to tell. David best Hulk writer bar none. Many don't enjoy his "jokey" approach, but it fit the tenor of the times (note also contemporaneous Giffen/DeMatteis JLA/JLI and Seienfeld on TV).

Byrne was his own worst inker. Noting here my admiration for the man's many accomplishments, I find this statement to be entirely true. Vince Colletta could ink John Byrne better than John Byrne.

Stupid computer. It should have just insisted on a complete question being asked. "Why?" is no more thought-provoking than "Who?". They are both unanswerable for the same reason. Still love The Prisoner, though. Sorry to extend the tangent, but I get cranky about supposedly "deep" stuff that is obvious nonsense. Don't get me started on koans.
