Two Thor titles this week:
THOR #26. Banner of War: Part 4 of 5. Written by Donny Cates. Art by Martin Coccolo.
A 60th Anniversary crossover celebration of both characters. This crossover has been better than I expected as Odin & Banner work behind the scenes to prevent Thor & Hulk from escalating their conflict. In this issue both Thor & Hulk are transformed into different versions of a Hulk/Thor amalgam. Also Tony Stark & Sif try and help but things are not going well with Hulk's gamma fueled power mixing with Thor's Odinforce literally leads to an explosive outcome.
JANE FOSTER & THE MIGHTY THOR #1. Written by Torunn Gronbekk. Art by Michael Dowling.
In a separate title Thor is missing and Jane must take up Mjolnir again to find him as the Golden Realm is under attack from Hela, Ulik and the Enchantress. However Jane discovers Odin is now imprisoned inside Mjolnir and she is reluctant to take on the power of Thor because of this. There is a beautiful page showing her transform into Thor with the descriptions of how addicting the power feels. Despite this Jane goes into action as a Valkyrie instead...

Star Wars #24Written by Charles Soule Art by Ramon Rosanas Summary:Grand Moff Tarkin's protege,Commander Zahra, has had the Rebellion on the run since Hoth, but now Leia has turned the tables at last. Plot: Well, with this issue, it has come to pass, the long multi-year series spanning story reaches its conclusion. While there have been a few stories that were independent to themselves like War of the Bounty Hunters, this really is a book that has essentially been one story for the past two years and while it has often been a slog with what I felt were some seriously padded out issues I have to say that at the end of it, desite that pacing, it ultimately told a decent story. This series picked up right after the events of The Empire Strikes Back and filled in some of the one year gap between that film and Return of the Jedi. And through its run Soule has managed to put his spin on the big lingering question since the original trilogy was released: Why did it take Luke and Leia so long to go rescue Han? Well, they were pursued by an insideous Imperial commander who loved Tarkin like he was her father and sought to get revenge on Princess Leia for Tarkin's death. And again, pacing issues aside, it was nice to see the focus on Leia as a legitimate Rebel leader as so much of what we got on screen from Leia lacked a lot of agency. Could this whole two year "epic" have been told in a quarter of the time? You're damn straight it could have been! But still and all, taken together it was decent. Art:Although the art team here continues to not be able to consistently capture the likeness of Carrie Fisher as Leia their Chewie was absolutely fantastic. I loved the emotions they were able to convey through his furry face without ever making it look too human. Grade: As an issue I'd say it was a 7.5/10 but probably a 6/10 for the series as a whole.

I might have to pick up Jane, I loved her previous time as Thor. Me too. Usually I'm not crazy about "replacement" characters but don't mind as much if it is a character with a long history with the hero they are replacing. Plus it was so well done and compelling. Plus this is a 5 issue mini series.

Reading list - That Texas Blood #14 - Amazing Spider-Man #3 - Twig #2 - Dark Knights of Steel #7 - Batman: Killing Time #4 How's Killing time been? I passed it by and thought I might try the trade if it was decent. It's interesting. King feels like he's coasting on his Batman laurels and is just throwing together another Batman that would've been in his run. It's a bit muddled for me. I find about 80% of his work unreadable. I'm downloading this so I'm wasting money and it's an easy delete if it sucks.

I'm not sure any book has fallen off as precipitously as That Texas Blood. Man the first arc was great. But since then...

Legion of X #1 and #2 (Yes, I know #1 came out a week ago (or was it two), but I didn't get around to the story yet and it's easier to do both in 1 review. Written by Si Spurrier Art by Jan Bazaldua and Federico Blee
What Happened Before: Mutants have organized and live together now on the living island of Krakoa. Nightcrawler is one of the Ruling Council of Krakoa and recently formulated a philosophy for the mutants of Krakoa to deal with their new-found immortality without giving in to self-destructive behaviour. Placed within the Mind of David Haller, the mutant known as Legion, Nightcrawler and his Legionaries/Legionnaires (both terms are used) will protect the mutants of Krakoa from themselves.
Plot: #1: We get introduced to Nightcrawler's Legion during their morning briefing as various team-members get their duty for today. Pixie and Lost investigate somebody possessing mutants against their will, Forget-Me-Not and Juggernaut investigate a mutant accussed of murdering his human wife while Nightcrawler meets with the mutants of Arakko at Storm's Request. Meanwhile Legion anticipates the revival of Blindfold, his lover.
#2: Nightcrawler has teamed-up with Weaponless Zsen, an Arakko mutant, to find a missing god, a trickster that escaped Arakko's arena. Legion and Blindfold may be meeting with said trickster god, the mysterious Mother Righteous. The others are chasing after the body-snatching mutant, Switch, who has been taken over mutants against their will.
The Good: I really liked Way of X last year and this is the continuation of that series. It focuses on more minor characters (except for Nightcrawler and Juggernaut) and I like giving minor characters a chance to develop. It also fleshes out the 3 basic commandments of Krakoa a bit more so that the Legionnaires have something to focus on. Everything with the escaped Trickster God seems to be screaming "Loki" (not just the trickster god, we see some silhouettes and they seem to having/wearing horns quite similar to Loki's traditional costume).
I love that Nightcrawler is trying to not have his Legionnaires be a police force, but tries to find solutions that support everybody.
Arakko's relationship with their gods was a really interesting concept (There was once a mutant that could summon gods, but his plan to summon the gods to help them in the war with the demons of Amenth, turned into a disaster. Since then Arakko has been agressive to summon any gods that want to be worshipped by them and get them to prove themselves in combat against the people of Arakko. So far they have found no worthy one).
The Bad: It's not very new-reader friendly: several characters get no introduction and a lot of the story is a continuation of Way of X, so something which you probably want to check out first, before reading this. Also it's quite packed with various storylines (4 seperate storylines, though they may have more overlap as we get further in) so some storylines seem to be underserved so far.
Overall: I quite like it, this was the most anticipated of the new X-titles for me as I liked Way of X a lot last year. I'd say that X-Men Red is probably the better title (based on the first issue) as it seems more focused.

I'm not sure any book has fallen off as precipitously as That Texas Blood. Man the first arc was great. But since then... Yeah. I'm still reading it because it's a decent hard boiled crime book but such a slope. After the first arc it wobbled and went back up with the Christmas special. Issue 14.... well, let's see. Starting off okay.

I wasn't wowed by the new issue.

I wasn't wowed by the new issue. I was a bit young when the Satanic Panic stuff hit but do remember it being in the news, especially the McMartin trial and the people up in arms about DnD. First issue of his arc seems something like a horror movie or True Detective type thing. It's still better than most books out there. I'll see how it goes after this arc.
