Surprisingly, nothing this week to read. I'm okay with that as I have some HCs I picked up this past weekend to start cracking on. I'll post later as my read of the week.

I was contemplating getting Twig. I will get the Defenders TPB, but singles not a lot is coming out these days. Paper shortages causing a lot of delays as far as I've heard.

Flashpoint Beyond #1Written by Geoff Johns Art by Xermánico and Mikel Janín Summary: With Barry Allen dead Thomas Wayne travels to Aquaman's stronghold in the UK for clues on how to fix his world. Plot: While I'm not usually a fan of events I have to say that Flashpoint was actually fairly decent in its exploration of what could happen if one element was changed but with that said how do you revisit that? For Johns the answer was simple, what if Barry died and the paradox was never fixed? It's not as if it's a proposition without merit, there are plenty of comics that have explored discarded "What If's?" and Flashpoint itself was one giant "What If..." so one more certainly doesn't seem like a bridge too far as a concept in and of itself. That said, while I'm not opposed to the concept on principle it does leave me asking, "Why?" what does Johns hope to say bringing back these dark reflections of the heroes we know? Although the action here was well done and I like the mystery of who killed Barry the answers to "why" Johns revisited this story were pretty lacking. I don't expect to have all the answers, certainly not in the first issue...but some kind of inkling would be nice as otherwise it starts to feel a little like filler. I think a lot of how I ultimately feel about this sequel will come down to the landing and for now I'm willing to wait and see. Art: As is the case with any with Johns attached the art team is of course top notch. While not the same team from the original Flashpoint they effortlessly capture that sharper, darker feel that epitomized the original making it really feel like a continuation of that world visually. Grade:7/10

Not a lot for me either, just Flashpoint, TMNT and I might check out the new Obi-Wan book.

Star Wars: Obi-Wan #1Written by Chris Cantwell Art by Ario Anindito Summary: As a monstrous sandstorm bears down his hut in the Judland Wastes, Jedi Knight Obi-Wan Kenobi reflects on his past. Plot: With Obi-Wan Kenobi getting a new show on Disney+ later this month the powers that be at Marvel Comics have decided to produce a new comic series to go along with it. This new mini-series by Cantwell sets out to explore not only some of Obi-Wan’s time on Tatooine from a reflective frame narrative but also probes deeper into Obi-Wan’s past. While the main story seems to be focused on the young Kenobi, I really do think my favorite parts were the recollections of the aged Jedi Master biding his time in exile on Tatooine. Cantwell just really nailed the voice of the hermit like Jedi Master we first met in the original film, so much so that reading this issue I swear I could almost hear Alec Guinness' voice in my head. That isn't to say the action in the main part of the narrative wasn't good, I really enjoyed seeing Obi Wan as a youngling even if he was a little more head strong and brash than I'm used to seeing Obi-Wan but that's no big issue as age is often a strong teacher in that regard. All and all this is a great time to be a fan of Obi-Wan and I'm looking forward to both the new show as well as further issues of this book. Art: I think a big part of my feeling of fidelity towards the original came from the fantastic art by Anindito. Looking at the images here you'll swear you're looking at lost stills from the film, his Obi-Wan looks exactly like Guinness but although definitely referenced from photos it escapes that flat lifeless feeling that art often gets when it's too focused on photo-realism.

The art on Ninja Turtles is killing me, the reintroduction of Venus de Milo was interesting but the art is just so amateurish. I'm convinced that I could draw this book better.

Read of the week: Sonambulo: Sleep of the JustI'm going to shill for a dear friend of mine and his book. Rafael Navarro is a Xeric Foundation winner, 2 time Emmy winner animator and all around awesome guy. Sonambulo is pure fun and awesomeoness. Throw together lucha Mexican wrestlers and the history of them (films and the ring), pulp novels and the supernatural and you have Sonambulo! Like the world-weary street guys of Spillane and Hammet, Sonambulo steps head on into danger, living in a world where werewolves still lurk in the streets and Dia De Los Muertos can literally become a holiday for those who seek revenge from the grave. Every story holds a dream-like bizarre quality, letting the reader know that the world of Sonambulo is not the world of an ordinary guy. Depending on the case, or the subjects from whom he chooses to extract a dream in order to reveal some well-hidden clue, or as the case may be, their deepest, darkest secrets, Sonambulo knows that at the dead of night, his day is just beginning...

Not sure if a couple of these were last week, but you get the idea Action COmics #1042 : looks like after alot of buid up (much if it sort of meandering) we're finally getting down to the revolution.. and it's about time. I was getting close to giving up on this book. Definitely poor pacing, but the overreacing plot is good, so I'm sticking with it. The Martian Manhunter back up had a pretty satisfying ending.. nothing character changing or anything, but a solid story. Robin #14 Continuing the aftermath of Ra's death. Damian and Ravager vs. Deathstroke and Respawn, with a big reveal that seems like I should care, but I'm not sure I do. Worth it for the last page seeing Damian in the drivers seat and Batman in the back. Frontiersman Lock Up Special : After the events of the first arc, our hero gets arrested and indicted for the murder of Trefoil, and goes to a holding facility, where, as you would imagine, chaos ensues. Another really interesting stuff about the genre in general here.. I highly recommend the trade. Looks like the next arc starts in September.
