I've held it my hands and took a photo with it. It's even more beautiful in person. Nice comic, too. One of my favourite Gilbert solo series - wish it had been longer, or that he'd done a few sequels

This is probably a weird choice, but if I could own any piece of original art I would love to have the cover to an important "childhood comic". Plus it has a cool shark. My copy (the only image I currently have and I'm too lazy to take a new one just for this post): The original:

Obviously the answer is a splash page for Man Gull.

Here's one of the first that comes to mind for me: But I can think of a bunch more for Doctor Strange alone.

I would kill for the next-to-last page of the original Marvel Star Wars adaptation, which was inked by Dave Stevens... I can't find the whole thing on line, but here's the top part of it... He might have inked the final page, as well...

I didn't remember that they spelled out "Artoo Detoo" and "See Threepio" that way in the comic. Did they switch later in the series to the more familiar R2D2 and C3P0 ?

I'm wondering if there's any piece of original art upon which the work we're all familiar with conceals something different. Something like the ' Spider-Man!' title from Amazing Fantasy #15 hiding another one which Ditko tried out and dismissed. Not unusual to see original art where something's been pasted over something else, but is there any great "We'd love to know what's under this paste up, but finding out could ruin the art" mysteries out there? Anyway, my choice would be Action Comics #1. I know I'll start questioning whether or not I made the right decision with any choice I make, but this would be the easiest to justify since I could look at it and say, "It all started here". I prefer Batman, but "Wow! The first Superman!" falls easier on the brain than "Wow! The first Batman!...by that creep who ripped off Bill Finger..."

That first Superman would be *all* paste-ups, as the first few stories in Action consisted of cut-up and rearranged panels from Siegel and Shuster's original 13-week samples for the proposed daily syndicated strip.

You could do worse than this.

You could do worse than this. I never think of Ditko as being an "anatomy guy", but man, he could really turn it on when he had to.

Hell yeah. There are a few comics in my life that just LOOKING AT THE IMAGE transports me back to my youth... this is one of them What a cultural touchstone!

(...) This painting by Don Newton. Yep, that one came to mind for me as well. There's a number of Charlton painted covers from around that time not just by Newton, but also Tom Sutton, Joe Staton and John Byrne, among others, that I similarly wouldn't mind having as framed paintings. I suppose my second choice would be this one, my favorite E-man cover: Sadly, that - and the Don Newton one - probably ended up soaking up water on the print room floor, or as cutting mats. Oh, Charlton....

A couple...
1) Steranko's original drawing of Hulk for that King Size Special 1 2) Any LB Cole cover...but probably Terrors of the Jungle 17 3) Thor 337...one of my favourite covers of all time
