So I actually picked up three more of the Iron Man books I needed, so that was exciting. My 2022 goals: -Get 'Demon in a Bottle' for a decent price -Read more of the Silver Age DC collections that are sitting around - Continue to make progress on the 'to read' pile (good progress last year... down to a full milk crate) - Replace a few more boxes with plastic ones Not only did I get 'Demon in a Bottle'.. but a few others too, so assuming my ebay lot comes in without trouble, I'll have from 72 of the original run through Civil War.

Buying Goals- I have such a backlog of unread comics and trades that I probably shouldn't making specific buying goals. So my one goals is to buy fewer stories/issues than I read this year. Reading Goals- Re-read (or read) some stuff from each of the four main classic X-Men comics: Uncanny X-Men, X-Factor, New Mutants, and Excalibur. For most of those it'll be re-reading, but I haven't read that much Excalibur before and have never read some of the later issues of New Mutants. - Binge all or part of Captain America #258-285 - Read one or more of the TPBs & comics I have of late 1980s Spider-Man - Read some or all of Avengers #278-300 - Pick a couple of periods from Legion of Super-Heroes that I haven't read that much of to binge: maybe the beginning of 5YL or Earthwar - Make a dent in the Batman Archives/Omnibi I have - Read more stuff that's non-Big Two and/or non-super hero. Not gonna lock myself into specific titles, so I have maximum wiggle room. - Maybe some Byrne Fantastic Four - Read whatever Marvel Comics Presents and/or Action Comics Weekly that I'm in the mood for At the 3 month mark, I have completed all my 2022 resolutions. Wow! I can't believe how quick and easy that was!

For Spider-Man, I read two Amazing Spider-Man Epic Collections - Ghosts of the Past and Venom, as well as floppies of the issue that fall between those two TPBs.

A few days before the midpoint of the year, here's my progress.
Buying Goals
- I have such a backlog of unread comics and trades that I probably shouldn't making specific buying goals. So my one goals is to buy fewer stories/issues than I read this year. Probably going in the wrong direction. I've bought a few TPBs this year, plus an Omnibus. I just made an order for 30+ comics from Lone Star, so there's good chance that my purchases have exceeded my reading.
Reading Goals
- Re-read (or read) some stuff from each of the four main classic X-Men comics: Uncanny X-Men, X-Factor, New Mutants, and Excalibur. For most of those it'll be re-reading, but I haven't read that much Excalibur before and have never read some of the later issues of New Mutants. I've read Excalibur #1-34, The Sword is Drawn, Weird War III, and the Excalibur serial from Marvel Comics Presents #31-38. Must of this is stuff I haven't read before, so I want to do some re-reading. - Binge all or part of Captain America #258-285 Not yet. - Read one or more of the TPBs & comics I have of late 1980s Spider-Man I read Amazing Spider-Man #259-310 & Annuals #18-19, 22; the Spider-Man vs. Wolverine one-shot; Spectacular Spider-Man #130-133, 137-150; Web of Spider-Man #1, 6, 29-33, 36; and possibly a spare issue or two I forgot. - Read some or all of Avengers #278-300 Read it all. - Pick a couple of periods from Legion of Super-Heroes that I haven't read that much of to binge: maybe the beginning of 5YL or Earthwar Read Superboy and the Legion of Super-Heroes #239-240 (from just before Earthwar) and Legion of Super-Heroes #1-12 from the 5 Years Later era. - Make a dent in the Batman Archives/Omnibi I have Nope. - Read more stuff that's non-Big Two and/or non-super hero. Not gonna lock myself into specific titles, so I have maximum wiggle room. Read Persepolis. Also read Nexus (miniseries) #1-3 and Nexus (ongoing) #1-3, 19-25. - Maybe some Byrne Fantastic Four Not yet. - Read whatever Marvel Comics Presents and/or Action Comics Weekly that I'm in the mood for In two birds with one stone mode, of course I read the Excalibur serial from MCP #31-38.

I have have bitten the bullet and started to sell off my Bronze Age Hulks. Pretty much starting for a cheap price to let the market decide what it's worth.

I'd like to find another genre I haven't sampled in depth, something I can access online. I'm leaning towards jungle comics. With Hourman finishing up soon, I think I'm finally going to do this. My plan is to review one issue of every classic jungle comic series I can find: JUNGLE COMICS, JUNGLE JIM, JUNGLE WAR, JUNGLE ACTION, SHEENA, SHANNA, KAÄNGA, KA-ZAR, KORAK...there's a ton of them! I'm going to try to find the "jungle gems" and the "jungle junk"...coming soon!

In the broadest terms, read more new or recent stuff - say from the 2010s up to now. That's the only thing I'll need some resolve to to stick to. The oler stuff takes care of itself - I expect to continue with Steve Caynon, Dan Dare, maybe Johnny Hazard if I can find the volumes I need. I'll probably finish the Kurtzman-era MAD and then see if I want to continue on from there, assming I can find the issues collected somewhere. And I'll be reading maybe noe or two thing s more frm the 80s but mostly moving into the early-90s and beyond, depending on how long it takes me. But the newer stuff I have trouble getting motivated for at times, so I hope to make a big dent in the 2010-2021 books on my stack. Last year I made a bad start on that score but gained just a bit of momentum towards the end, so I hope I can build on that.
Made a decent start on reading some newer things in the first few months of 2022 but have been less consistent lately, not having read anything recent in the months of April, June, or July. I.m getting back on track now with a couple things for August, though.
The older stuff, I have been more steady with, as usual, making good progress through Steve Canyon, Dan Dare, and finishing the Kurtzman-era MAD. And I'm getting through Hellblazer pretty quickly too - in the middle of Ennis's run now, around #62.
So much as usual.

Not really a resolution, but I've added a few things to my to-read stack: Mister X: first series, which I've never read beyond the first 4 or 5 issues Englehart/Rogers Batman: been putting this off too long and just recently acquired the Shadow of the Batman reprints Return of the New Gods and JLA/New Gods story: two early post-Kirby New Gods things I've never read; though I just realised I'm missing an issue of the Perez JLA/NG so I have to find that first Dan Dare: read the first two stories at the end of last year and I'm hooked.
I did read Mister X, the JLA/New Gods 3-parter, and another Dan Dare story.
Have not yet read the Englehart/Rogers Batman or Return of the New Gods.

Buying Goals
I lost my taste for buying books to fill runs at the end of 2021. I do have small non major runs, to keep an eye out for like inexpensive Image books, but I have a want list that includes: Astro City ( Vertigo ) Atlas books The Kirby Captain America run from 193-214 Deathstroke ( Need 17)DC Comics presents ( Need 5)Femforce books ( Need too many to list) Force works ( the Marvel series that followed WCA) New Warriors( Need 7)The 90's Silver Surfer series ( need 7) Savage Dragon 248, 249. I missed them because of the pandemic and I don't want to pay 30 dollars each on eBay.
Selling Goals
I have many books from the Bronze Age that I want to sell but I hate getting gouged by Ebays fee's. I have to see where I will post them. Reading Goals Birds of Prey V.1 E-man - both the Charlton and First runs Flash the 1987 run Femforce Green Lantern the Kyle Raynor run Invader Bronze Age Roy Thomas series Mighty Crusaders Rich Buckler runMOKF - I will start from 15 again to complete the reading this time Planetary Secret Origins Starman the James Robinson run Tom Strong Thor ( starting with the SA issues that I spent the last 4 years buying) The Engelhart Batman runUsagi Yojimbo Trades Hellblazer from the beginning. Reviewing Goals
Maybe I will start a review thread. I don't have the patience for it but, I have a few books that haven't been covered on this forum yet that I might start this year. Buying Goals: I completed 4 series this years so far. That might be all that I complete unless I find a set of issues in a show unexpectingly. I'm not actively going to overpay for what I still need. Selling goals: I sold about a dozen or so Bronze Age Hulks. Reading Goals: I'm continuing to go through my list. I never seem to have enough time. Reviewing Goals: I did the Liefeld Youngblood series. Review threads take a lot of time and effort. That might be it for this year, unless I can find another short series that won't require a lot of time.

Going into the second quarter of the year and I've already broken most of my resolutions....that's why I don't put them in stone.
I put all of mine in stone. It takes me all year to carve them. That's why they never get accomplished. My next year's resolution is to put them on paper.

With a month left in the year, here's where I'm at:
Buying Goals
- I have such a backlog of unread comics and trades that I probably shouldn't making specific buying goals. So my one goals is to buy fewer stories/issues than I read this year. Probably going in the wrong direction. Bought probably a dozen TPBs (mostly Epic Collections), plus an Omnibus. I think I made two orders from Lone Star this year. That's a lot of pages, so there's good chance that my purchases have exceeded my reading. Although I did do a solid bit of reading in titles other than my reading goals below, mostly notably reading Power Man & Iron Fist #50-125.
Re-read Uncanny X-Men #210-219, New Mutants #46, and X-Men Annual #4. - Binge all or part of Captain America #258-285 Read #258-268 (plus the crossover in Defenders). Might keep going to finish this in December. - Pick a couple of periods from Legion of Super-Heroes that I haven't read that much of to binge: maybe the beginning of 5YL or Earthwar Read Superboy and the Legion of Super-Heroes #239-240 (from just before Earthwar) and Legion of Super-Heroes #1-14 from the 5 Years Later era. - Make a dent in the Batman Archives/Omnibi I have Read the Dark Knight Archives vol. 3. - Read more stuff that's non-Big Two and/or non-super hero. Not gonna lock myself into specific titles, so I have maximum wiggle room. Read Persepolis. Also read Nexus (miniseries) #1-3 and Nexus (ongoing) #1-3, 19-25. - Maybe some Byrne Fantastic Four Probably won't do this before the end of the year. - Read whatever Marvel Comics Presents and/or Action Comics Weekly that I'm in the mood for In two birds with one stone mode, of course I read the Excalibur serial from MCP #31-38.

I don't think I am going to accomplish anything inthe last few days of the year that would radically alter my assessment of my success with this year's goals, so it's time for The Reckoning! AcquisitionsSince I am still not working and my only income is selling vintage rpg stuff (my wife is working and she makes our ends meet, so we're not in dire straights or anything, just being more judicious in our spending), I don't anticipate any major spending on back issues unless the situation changes. I have a little bit of credit still, and a couple of dealers I do some trading with, so I am sure I will grab some stuff here and there, but it will be mostly opportunistic grabs. When I do spend, I want to focus on the stuff I am actively trying to amass-Kubert war books, Usagi issues, Groo issues, Scooby Doo issues, Uncle Scrooge related issues, and a few other series I only need a couple of issues to finish (like Xenozoic Tales), and maybe a couple affordable red dress covers. I wound up getting more than I anticipated. I also started a new collecting goal (recreating my childhood collection) that I did not anticipate. I did stick mostly to stuff I was actively collecting at the beginning of the year, I got a number of Disney Ducks (Scrooge & Donald), a little Usagi and Groo, a fair chunk of Kubert war stuff, but not much Scooby. I wound up putting a lot more effort and resources into making progress on the 70s and 90s Ghost Rider series than I anticipated (they were in the misc. other short series, they just got prioritized more than I anticipated a the beginning of the year, as did D&D related comics). I did also add a handful of affordable red dress covers. I did also manage to get 2 issues of Fast Willie Jackson, a series I never thought I would see in the wild at an affordable price. I made a lot of progress on this, but not in the way I anticipated. I scrapped the organization system I had been using (dividing books by publisher essentially, Marvel/DC/Indy) and implemented a new one that simply divided books into 2 categories-short series (i.e. series/characters that ran for 50 issues or less) and longterm series/characters (i.e. series that ran for more than 50 issues or characters who have had multiple series over the years totaling more than 50 issues). I also have a small number of special collections-DC War for example. Within each division books are simply in alphabetical order by title character. Short series have dividers by letter, longterm series have dividers for each title/character. I have completed everything up through the letter T and am working on books starting with U, but am currently waiting to get more supplies. I have purged a number of books as I have gone through. The only stuff I have left to go through (which will make their own sections with what I keep) is the Batbooks and Superbooks. I need to cut down what I have on those, but I am not sure where the wheat and chafe will be separated, so I will tackle that once everything else is done. I am pleased with the progress I have made though, considering how difficult bags and boards were to come by early in the year and how expensive supplies currently are, so with my limited budget, I have done well on this. I ended up not setting up at any shows. I did bulk out most of my remaining rpg and CCG inventory, and am working on bulking the purged comics and toys, but that will bleed into 2023. A lot of what I got from bulking out funded the curating and what comics I did buy in '22. I did go to a few shows this year. I attended both Champion City shows, 2 Jim and Dan Shows and Gem City. I often brought a handful of books to trade at each show, and used the windfall for walkaround money or to get specific books at the shows. I read a lot of stuff this year. I made some headway in my Marvel read that grew out of what I had been reading in Unlimited and was inspired by Wolk's All the Marvels that I read early in the year. I ended up reading 61 trades/OGNs, I surpassed the 1500 individual issue goal (I was at 1645 at the end of November and am at somewhere near 100 for December), and I hit my Goodreads goal of 87, with 19 being prose (novels, short stories & non-fiction), so I hit all my quantitative goals for reading in the year. I even took an extended dip in the Steampunk pool. I may slightly alter how I measure prose reading goals for '23, looking at page goals rather than book goals as I have some longer books I want to dive into and that makes it difficult to reach some of the qualitative goals if I use book count. We'll see, I have a few days to decide yet. For the most part, I hit the mark, completing or making significant progress on all of the goals except for setting up at cons, and I did an end around on those moving the inventory other ways. So not a bad year in those terms (though the year presented plenty of other challenges in other ways). I've been contemplating '23 goals, and they may include some other aspects of geek culture, like movies and TV, that I haven't included before because I have a huge backlog of stuff I want to get to and setting quantitative goals is a good motivating factor, and also because as part of the basement refit I did to accommodate the curating, I have a nice viewing set up down there now so I can watch things as I work on bagging, boarding, organizing, purging comics etc. But we'll see. I am not ready to make my goals concrete just yet. Give me a couple of days and I will be. -M

ToS #40 too. IT was a good year for Iron Man books 2) I didn't make much progress here.. mostly catching up on my other stuff.. a bit, though. 3) 'to read' pile feels better.. but is still about a milk crate. so maybe not so much 4) Got 2 sets of 4 plastic boxes... 1/2 replaces old ones, 1/2 accomodated new books, getting there.

Reading Goals: After a couple of years reading a lot of Marvel Westerns, I'd like to find another genre I haven't sampled in depth, something I can access online. I'm leaning towards jungle comics. I'd also like to tackle reading complete runs of a few Golden Age features; I've made a good start on The Lost World (from PLANET COMICS) and Hour-Man (from ADVENTURE COMICS), and I certainly want to complete those. (I was toying with an in-depth thread on Hour-Man, something like chadwilliam's Spectre thread, but I don't know if anyone would really stick around for it.) Jack Cole's Midnight is one I'm interested in, The Heap is another. Wait, was Hourman this year??? I'd have sworn I did that in 2021, it feels like so long ago, but no, I covered almost everything in excruciating detail in the past 12 months! And I got a good start on my Jungle Gems or Jungle Junk sampling thread--limiting myself to one issue of each jungle comic I could identify has proven to be a wise choice; I think I can bring it to a close in the next few months. Review Goals: I plan to finish my look at Marvel's 2nd tier Western heroes, since I've only got a few features left to spotlight: Black Rider, Wyatt Earp, and the original Rawhide and Two-Gun Kids. My instincts for completionism may compel me to spend at least a little effort on an overview of Marvel's Big Four Western features, Rawhide, Colt, Two-Gun, and Ghost Rider, but they got a lot of attention in my Western Team-Up thread. I added a few more entries to that thread. The Marvel Westerns are a good change of pace now and then. Who's left now? Wyatt Earp, Rawhide & Two-Gun Version I, a pair of Annies, Arrowhead and Billy Buckskin, maybe a few others...should be able to finish that one off, too... Non-comics Goals: Another read-through of Mark Z. Danielewski's The Familiar Volumes 1-5, continuing my youtube synthesizer tutorials, getting the house in shape and sold so we can move into someplace new, refining my geoguessr skills, and writing some music! Got the house painted, but not sold. I only got around to The Familiar re-read this month and I'm some 400 pages into Volume 1 and still loving it. It's one of the most amazing writing accomplishments I've ever experienced; Danielewski pulls off an astounding effect I've never seen anyone do: this series is partly about subtle shifts in reality, as if the Mandela effect were really happening every so often. That's an oversimplification, and it's not expressed in such crude and direct fashion, that's just my shorthand way of explaining the small but intentional inconsistencies that develop between volumes. What's amazing is that when I re-read the book, I encounter parts of the story I don't remember happening at all in my previous readings, making it seem as if the books themselves have changed while they were on my bookshelves! My youtube synth tutorials have stalled, since I found someone who was doing what I planned but doing it better than I could, so I've got a new synth tutorial idea brewing, focused on microtonal music.
