Batman: One Dark Knight #1Written and Illustrated by Jock Summary: When a prison transfer from Arkham to Black Gate goes wrong Batman is stuck completing it on foot with Gotham's gangs on his tail. Plot: The premise here is pretty straight forward: a villain named EMP is being transferred but en-route there is an attempt on his life that ends up freeing him and he causes a city wide black out. Batman is alone, with out any of his high tech gadgets and he has to get EMP to Black Gate before the gangs of Gotham get to him. Who EMP is and why the gangs all seem to want him so badly has yet to be revealed but the set up, though basic, is more than interesting so far to keep me looking for more. This is Jock's first time doing both art and story and that's something a lot of artists struggle with so my expectations weren't incredibly high...but what Jock delivered is a decent enough read, though the characterization and dialogue of the cast was pretty thin here the plot is fun even if it's an action movie trope we're all pretty familiar with. Hopefully he can stick the landing. Art: While I was a little worried about how the story might turn out I never once doubted that the book would look amazing, and Jock doesn't fail there either. He delivers some really stunning wide screen vistas of the Gotham skyline as Batman observes the transfer that really give you an immersive feel for the world of the story, and the close ups are just dripping with Jock's typical moody look which I love. On top of that the action scenes of Batman running from roof top to roof top in his pursuit of the escaped EMP have a tremendous amount of energy to them, and the way he frames the scenes with Batman's cape make it seem like a living character of its own which is something we haven't gotten in a book since Kelley Jones left Batman way back in the day. It really makes Batman look like a believable creature of the night rather than just a weird guy in a funny costume, which is key for the character to work. Grade:7.5/10

There’s also the latest Catwoman, the latest Batman/Catwoman and Robins #2. I’m going to be living in Gotham for a few days. (But I pretty much do that anyway.)

I read Catwoman #38 already, and I liked it a lot, except for bringing in Clayface as a deus ex machina. Anybody could have pulled that off with Clayface helping. BOOOOOO!!

Does anybody else find Batman/Catwoman to be excruciatingly pretentious?

Trial of Magneto #5
OMG. . so, so, so stupid
the reveal is stupid, and then the "everything you know is wrong" explanation of the reveal and who / why was even dumber.
feh.
3/10 (and that 3 is only because the art is fantastic - if judging only on the art? 10/10)

Nightwing #87. Tom Taylor and Bruno Redondo.
This issue is one continuous image - if you put every page next to each other, you'll have one poster sized image.
Billionaire Dick Grayson has hired killers trying to kill him. Politicians and others want him stopped after he tries to help the city with his new found wealth. However they go too far when they steal his dog, Haley. Him and Barbara rescue Haley.
Interesting art experiment which actually succeeds in portraying motion very well. I also like the concept that Dick is the target not Nightwing. Taylor continues what is destined to be one the best Nightwing stories ever.

Moon Knight #6. Jed MacKay and Alessandro Cappuccio.
Moon Knight is beaten and near death. The one coming to his aid? His new enemy from #1-3. We get some more backstory about this new enemy/ally and why his motivations are complex. By the end Moon Knight is ready to continue his fight against evil.
MacKay has really outdone himself by taking all the past versions of Marc and highlighting key traits to revive Moon Knight and keep him unique as a street level hero.
Moon Knight is similar to Batman and Daredevil but his ties to Khonsu and the fact that he views his "mission" in a whole different way make this an interesting title.

Moon Knight #8 was really good, as majestic said. Much more grounded MK story than the Warren Ellis run, and I like that they’re using an underutilized villain (Zodiac) in this. Hawkeye: Kate Bishop #2 is fun. You have to learn to live with the “quirks” used when writing her (constant inner monologue, the text conversations with America and Cassie, etc), but it definitely has its own style and stands out; I now hear everything she says in Hailee Steinfeld’s voice. I thought I’d pick this up just so my daughters could read it, but I’m finding myself enjoying it as well.

I also picked up Robins #2 which even though I love the concept... I found the second issue a bit boring.
King Conan #1 wasn't as strong as I had hoped. I guess I wanted it to capture my interest from the start. I still may get it if reviews are good in collected form.
