Truly a gut punch. His (and Wolfman's) New Teen Titans is a huge part of why I am (still) a comics fan. Now it looks like I will never get a chance to meet him and tell him what his art meant to me. Glad I bought a sketch by him on eBay when he announced his retirement. Damn. I'm starting to choke up writing this...

Genuinely one of the kindest, most loving people I've ever met. I really can't believe this.

Just another reason I hate cancer.
Brave man with class and style, on the page and in the most agonizing moment of crisis of his life.
The wrong people always suffer fates like this.
Heartbreaking.

I'm not sure there's a "right" or "wrong" person who ends up with cancer--its just a class of disease that no group can avoid suffering from in some way. Perez's plight hits home for me, as I lost an aunt and an extended relative this year due to cancer, and they were not given a positive outcome. All life-long notions of controlling your own life just vanish when faced with this.

Sad news. A long-time favourite artist of mine, as he has been of so many for so long. I had been selfishly hoping agaist all evidence that his retirement would be in name only and that we'd occasionally see new work from him even now, and while I knew that was not very likely I was not expecting to hear this news.

This has been really hard to process and put into words. Like others have expressed, he's given us such a gift through his craft over the years. A giant amongst giants, his artistry and storytelling has touched so many people over so many years. But to couple that with tremendous character, to be so well known to love the fans and bring such positivity...I can't find many more words other than hope his time here is filled with as little pain as possible and he's able to enjoy what activities he can to the fullest with loved ones nearby.

Do we know where to get it? I was hoping DCBS would have it under their February solicitations for March but it wasn’t listed. Guess it was announced after the released the solicits.

If you have a local comic place you deal with , maybe you can have them pull one for you.

If you have a local comic place you deal with , maybe you can have them pull one for you. It just occurred to me with only 7,000 total how is anyone suppose to get one that's maybe 2 per store in all of America if not the world. My comic store The Comic Shop in Wilmington De. says they may try and auction off a copy, if they even get one and give money to Hero's initiative. I think that's a great idea.

Hero Initiative sells a lot of their stuff directly, so it may not even go through Diamond or a distributor. As for 7000K copies, most collected barely sell that in the direct market, and with no bookstore or Amazon distribution on this and the hefty price tag, they have to make sure the print run sells out or it will lose money and have nothing to give to charity. There may also be a cap on the print run by Marvel and/or DC, they aren't working well at all and I think the only reason this is getting done at all is that Hero Initiative went to them and neither wanted to look bad and take a PR hit if it got out they were the one who said no to a charity initiative to honor Perez, but that doesn't mean they were willing to just give the house away on this project.
I pulled up 6 random months between 2019 and 2021 on Comichron and looked at the trade paperback unit sales. Only in one of those months was there a collected edition that moved more than 5K units on the charts. Most of the months the top seller in the direct market was under 4K units.
7K sounds about right based on actual sales of collected editions in the direct market.

Well more normally get produced, just not sold in the direct market. Copies are sold to Amazon and book distributors for most releases, that are usually at a factor much higher than those produced for the direct market (2-3 times is the norm, more for best sellers). But since the Hero Initiative edition is not getting major book market distribution, Amazon and other book distributors won't be buying copies so it's print run was likely set at what they think the direct market could sell through. That's not the case for most collections, where the majority of the print run is sold outside the direct market. So 7000 is probably smaller than most books get overall, but larger than what most books get for the direct market alone. But yes, putting limited print run on anything is a marketing tactic. -M

Oh and a note for those who may not be following the matter too closely, George announced he has chosen to enter hospice. It was said it was not because the end was nearing, but that the level of care he needed was to much for his wife and family to manage and was impacting the quality of their life, so the decision was made to enter hospice to allow George to get the care he needed and be able to enjoy the time he has left with his friends and family without placing an undue burden on them. This likely means the appearances and such he was planning on making may be cancelled or limited though.
