While we 're used to it in May, FCBD is in August this year, next Saturday, and it's the 20th anniversary of FCBD so there are a few extra special goodies out there for it. If you have a local shop you support, show them some love next Saturday.

my store - Zeus! Comics in Dallas - which is run by a longtime member Dagada (Richard) from way back on the CBR boards. . is doing a wonderful thing in these Pandemic times. he's bundling into an "Adult" pack and a "Kids" pack, that can be requested online thru their store order portal, and then picked up at the store on the actual day (so they can control how many in the store, and allow those who have been ordering via the portal to participate as well). that's why Zeus is such a great spot. . run by a great guy! www.zeuscomics.com/

Just got back from FCBD at my lcs. They had books form both this year's offerings and last year's FCBD which never happened in their shop, so there were lot of books to choose from, and as a pull list customer, there was no limit to the number you could choose. I skipped the Marvel and DC offerings, and picked up a range of stuff form other publishers to sample. I had one book I had to get-I was told by my wife not to come back without a copy of the Critical Role: Mighty Nein book from Dark Horse (she has become a huge Critical Role fan over the last 3-4 months), and I wanted to read it as well, so that was my top choice. I also wanted to get Ed Piskor's Red Room and James Tynion's Welcome to the House of Slaughter. I was also hugely pleased to find copies of last year's Usagi Yojimbo offering, as I missed it with all the pandemic restrictions on shops last May. The shop was having a flat 25% off everything sale as well, so I picked up my new stuff, a graphic short box and a small stack of back issues to help support the shop. I'll post the back issues in the What Classic Comics have you purchased lately thread, but here's everything else I got today... The FCBD offerings form this year and last... and what was in my pull box plus the Bolland Starro JLA graphic short box (I had been in to pick up my file a week and a half ago, so there wasn't much in my file today... and again I'll post the back issues in the other thread. There's lots of books I am excited to check out. -M

I've read through a bunch of the FCBD stuff I picked up (though I still have a bunch to go).
So far I have gotten to:
Little Lulu-I've never been a big fan, and a little goes a long way, but I enjoyed what I read. Not sure I would seek out more though.
Space Pirate Captain Harlock-I was familiar with the anime though never saw it and never read previous comic versions. I enjoyed it. The individual issues of the series look to be on Hoopla so I may check it out. I ma track down the anime at some point too, though I have not watched much anime at all.
Black and Cal.Exit. Two short snippets, both interesting premises. Black-a world where only African Americans develop super-powers and how it upsets the status quo and how the status quo reacts. In some ways it reminds me of Excellence form Image (which replaces super-powers with magic, though it came first I believe). Cal.Eit is a what if thriller in a world like the one outside our doorstep where California secedes from the US. Both were interesting, but I didn't get enough form either to be hooked. Might check out the first trades of each if I get the chance though.
Hillbilly: The Lizard of Rusty Creek Cave-after reading this I realized I haven't read near enough Eric Powell. Something I intend to remedy. The premise of Hillbilly reminds me a lot of Manly Wade Wellmen's Silver John stories, a series of fantasy/horror tales set in the Ozarks of North Carolina.
Critical Role: The Mighty Nein/The Witcher-nice little prequel type story for Critical Role's second campaign, though you need to be familiar with one of the characters form that campaign to see how it connects to the main story. Great for fans of the show though. I am only a couple episodes into the Witcher on Netflix, and never played the games or read the prose versions, but it was a decent short story for the property it seems. Didn't make me want to track down the other comics though.
The Donald Duck and Archie books are exactly what you expected them to be. Fun little romps in familiar territory. The Archie book had a fun little anniversary hook.
Red Room is a disturbing horror book and is meant to be. It's the kind of horror I need to read in small doses though. Love the art's aesthetic though. I may look into the trades when they come out.
Worlds of Zorro was a fun sampler of the different Zorro books American Mythology is putting out including classic reprints and a new series by Don McGregor.
Usagi was great fun and Stan never disappoints.
Enter the House of Slaughter sets up the next phase of that series and I am on board. I have been reading Something is Killing the Children on hoopla and getting the trades as they come out and I am staying with this one and any possible spin-offs Tynion does.
Smurfs Tales-like Little Lulu, a little goes a long way for me. I liked the figures when I first saw them in stores in the early 80s, but despised the cartoon. I had never read any of the Peyo originals though and was curious. This offered a handful of Peyo's shorter stories and they were well down, but not something I would seek out in bulk. Glad I got it and read them though, and got to experience the Peyo originals.
I did read the three new issues I picked up that day too, so only 14 FCBD offerings left to get to.
