I thought of adding writers to the list but didn't want it to get unwieldy. I think Dwayne Mcduffie went too soon at age 49.

Didn't participate in the poll, because honestly I think it's kind of weird - esp. since there's no 'select all' option. But on the subject of comics creators who passed way before their time, the first one I always think of is Edvin Biukovic (just past 30; f***ing cancer). He produced amazing work in his all-too-brief career, and certainly would have gone on to produce even more amazing things if he had lived.

Kentaro Miura was 54 and still working on Beserk when he died. Osamu Tezuka was working on his life's work, Phoenix, when he died at age 60. Crayon Shin-chan may not be well known in the West, but it is extremely popular among Japanese children. Its author, Yoshito Usui, died at age 51 when he fell from a cliff while hiking.

I'll throw in a write-in for Klaus Schoenefeld, friend and collaborator with Ty Templeton on Stig's Inferno and Kelvin Mace, who died of a heart attack at age 24.

I didn't know that actually, but a quick look at the list of his work on Wikipedia seems to indicate that you're right (there's nothing beyond 1989). But yeah, there's nothing to say that he wouldn't have come back to writing comics. GCD lists three Marvel Fanfare backups by Mantlo that were published in 1991, but I suppose it's likely they had been in a drawer for some time.

I voted for Gene Day, Don Newton and Jack Cole.
Others who died much too young include Steve Dillon, 54, Dick Dillin, only 51 despite seeming to draw the JLA forever, John Paul Leon, 49, Seth Fisher and Nick Manabat, both only 23.

I voted for Gene Day. I know we can vote for up to three, but I wanted to restrict myself to just one. Darwyn Cooke would have been my next choice, then Don Newton. I agree that Joe Maneely should have been on the list (he was the second name that popped into my head after Gene Day) but it's almost impossible to come up with a list like this and not miss somebody. I'm sure it was enough work as it was to come up with this list. Also, I'd vote for Dwayne McDuffie if writers were on the list. I haven't read a ton of his stuff (because he's a post-1990 writer) but I really have liked what I have read of his, plus he wrote some Justice League animated series episodes I liked, though I've never seen Static Shock.

If you get the chance, watch Static Shock. It had its own voice and a very unique take on the teenage superhero than what usually comes to mind about that character type.

Darwyn Cooke, Steve Dillon and Michael Turner were some of my personal faves.

^ considering how many "new" covers Michael Turner puts out each year.. . like Tupac & Prince, I'm not really sure he's passed. Like Elvis and Jim Morrison, perhaps just a rumor

It could be a Machivellian plot to get back at Rob Liefeld for trying to poach him from Top Cow.

Like EdoBosnar I didn't vote, but thought it odd that I never think of Wally Wood as "dying young." Maybe it's because he always seemed to be around and his work was at so many places and had so many phases: EC, Mad, Warren, Topps, Tower, Witzend... as well as flitting in and out of DC and Marvel. Very different than Cooke or Stevens who were close to the same age, but still seemed like they still had a lot more to offer.

Yeah, Dick Dillon just popped into my head now, and I see that you're already mentioned him.
