Strange Tales #128 (cover date January 1965)
Jack Kirby-cover art; Stan Lee & Dick Ayers storytellers; Frank Giacoia (as Frank Ray)-inks, Artie Simek-Letters; (GCD indicates Dick Ayers is an uncredited co-plotter on this issue)
Cover Notes: Split cover, top part features Wanda & Pietro vs. Torch & Thing-Wanda has bolts firing from her hands to extinguish Torch’s flame
Synopsis: Wanda & Pietro are conflicted as to whether they should stay with the Brotherhood or leave and seek the advice of the Fantastic Four on the matter, but things go awry.
Wandanotes:
-Wanda’s 1st app is page 1 panel 1 (a splash page) 1st splash page appearance for Wanda in any book
-on the splash Pietro is urging Wanda to flee from Magneto with him, but she is reluctant because of the debt she owes him. Pietro is insistent and is packing their suitcases.
-Wanda’s costume here is slightly different, it is a 2 piece outfit rather than the onesy she has worn in previous appearances and on Kirby’s cover. Not sure if this was Ayers doing his own thing and not following the Kirby design or an intentional change.
-Wanda uses her hex power to trip up Pietro and make him listen to her
-She argues they cannot leave because they gave their word and honor means everything to their family (there has been no previous discussion of their family and what they know of their life prior to being found by Magneto)
-Pietro counters that their honor is tarnished every time they obey Magneto’s evil commands
-Wanda reminds him how Magneto saved her life when she was accused of witchcraft and that they swore allegiance to him, so only he can release them from their oath
-Pietro counters that Magneto’s plans to conquer the world and destroy homo sapiens and asks how they can continue to serve him in such a mad plan
-Wanda asks Pietro if he has forgotten how humans hate & fear mutants like them, and asks if perhaps Magneto is right, lamenting “if only we knew”
-Pietro laments that they have no one to turn to to advise them, but notes there are others with powers and if they could only find them they might get an answer (art shows Spidey, DD & Avengers)
-Wanda mentions there are four whose address is known (art shows FF) and asks if they should seek them out for advice
-Pietro answers with an emphatic yes and that they must leave immediately to do so
-scene switches to the Baxter Building where Ben & Johnny are present and Reed & Sue are absent, they are watching the TV which has a piece on dangerous mutants and shows pictures of the Brotherhood including Wanda and Pietro
-Wanda & Pietro arrive at the Baxter Building wearing coats over their costumes for a minimal disguise and try to get access to the FF’s private elevator, but a pair of guards prevent them from getting to it
-Wanda uses her hex power on a fire hose to restrain the guards and gains access to the elevator while Pietro races up the stairs instead
-Pietro arrives first but before he can explain why he is there Ben & Johnny attack the dangerous mutant
-Pietro’s temper gets riled up and he answers in kind and fighting ensues
-Wanda arrives just as Ben is about to hit Pietro and hexes Ben, causing his punch to miss Pietro but strikes a piece of machinery instead that flies and strikes Wanda knocking her out
-Pietro pauses to check on Wanda then angrily resumes his attack on Ben & Johnny
-Pietro is winning easily and railing against them that he and Wanda had come in peace but Torch & Thing had attacked without reason
-Ben & Johnny don’t believe Pietro and renew their attack on him, convincing Pietro that Magneto was right about homo sapiens
-Johnny traps Pietro is a flame cage as Wanda awakens and uses her hex to cause a torrent of rain to smash into the Baxter Building and extinguish Johnny’s flames (this is a bit more than we have ever seen Wanda's powers do before, as there was no indication of it raining outside so it seems she created the rain torrent with her hex)
-Pietro tells Wanda she and Magneto were right and homo sapiens cannot be trusted as they flee the Baxter Building, Ben & Johnny don’t pursue
-Pietro then tells Wanda that although Magneto is evil, it is only with him that they are safe as the story ends
