Been with an unreliable internet connection all day, so I'm sorry to say I haven't been able to accomplish much on my end. Here's info to share:
1. Archiving. I came across httrack, a free downloadable program that downloads entire websites with the click of a few buttons and keeps the links working between pages. The process is slow and, with the unreliable connection I've had today, I've yet to test the finished product, but this may be a viable means of backing up the entire old site. From there, we'll have a lengthy discussion about what to actually DO with it, since I'm still concerned about the legality of just throwing old CBR pages up on the web without Jonah's permission. For now, I suggest playing with this program as a means of storing your favorite threads. Depending upon the size of the saved file, it may be possible to download the ENTIRE Classic Comics forum, with every thread intact. If anyone would like to try this, that would be amazing.
2. Moderating. I see concerns each day about the rules I've posted and that the site may be overly moderated. I want to make it clear that I have absolutely no desire to police this place. I'd be perfectly happy to pass the admin controls over to someone else; it just happens that I was the one who had the know-how to build this place, was able to do so quickly enough to meet our needs, and now is left with the responsibility of ensuring this place doesn't go to the wolves. For every protest I hear about "why can't we say what we want to say?" or every well meaning question I get about whether or not it's okay to post a new thread (Yes. Yes it is), someone posts something VASTLY inappropriate that we never would have seen back at CBR, and I have to do something about it. I'd love to just say "no rules. Just do things as we've always done them" but there are many a folk here posting differently now that the fear of the CBR mods is no longer a reality. I'd love to get back to the point where we are a community that doesn't require any oversight, but we are not there yet. Any interference you've seen from me or the mods at this point is with the intent of getting us back to where this community used to be -- polite, and well aware of how to be naughty while still being work-place safe. I don't want to read any more posts about foot porn, and I doubt I'm the only one feeling that way.
That's really all for now. Thanks for all the great discussion and inventive threads I'm seeing popping up. I'm a little grumpy with my internet connection and the aforementioned need to be a mod when I have no desire to be a mod, but I'm also very proud of the resilience I see in this community, as well as the heart and vibrant conversation coming across in large doses.
Be well.
