It’s pretty unlikely I’m going to read any comics today with the boys home and the celebrations and whatnot. So I’m calling it a year.
Most surprising…I actually followed through.
I ended up at approximately 1501 books for the year. Big lull in late summer and into the fall when I had a massive readers block.
Vertigo was the big publishing imprint (no real surprise) with over 1/3 of my reading. Image was a reasonably distant second with close to 1/5.
Crime/noir was the top genre with a bit over 1/4 (no real surprise). Superhero’s came in second largely due to a few re-reads of some decent size runs (Hitman, for example). Horror made a surprisingly strong showing.
1990-2019 made up 3/4 of the books. The 2010s just edged out a win for top decade.
I feel like 2022 may be dominated by comic strip reprints. We shall see.
Looking at Goodreads, I read 75 books this year, three over my goal of 72. I’ve been pretty steady in that ballpark for the last five years.

Calling it a month and year. 137 for December putting me just over 1300 (1306) for the year.
December highlights-Age of Bronze, Thorgal, Berlin, Zot!
With Goodreads I hit 99, 12 over my goal of 87. I thought of string to sneak in an art book this afternoon to hit 100, but wound up making plans to have a friend come over to play board games instead.
On to next year...

225 books read and 71 reviews written isn't bad considering the crazy year I've had. Best yet, I ended it by reading the Dark Phoenix Saga with Amber from beginning to end in one sitting, wrapping up an hour before the new year. What a way to ring in 2022!

Finished with 45 books read for December, almost All Digital. The highlights were Night Nurse- That was an interesting read with Jean Thomas as writer and artist Win Mortimer. I never heard of Mortimer, but his art was nice with good storytelling. Bone : Out of Boneville tpb. This was my first contact with the Bone series. It was decent. The Love Bunglers TPB by Jaime Hernandez. I always seem to have problems following these Love and Rocket books because they jump around in time. I also have to put together that Maggie and Hopey look different in different stories. It was interesting and hard core in its content.

Mortimer spent the first 25 years of his career doing journeyman work at DC on…all kinds of stuff, but a lot of Superman and Batman. He co-created Stanley & His Monster. He then freelanced for Marvel and Gold Key. Probably best known for doing all 57 issues of Spidey Super-Stories. As I mentioned in the Classic Comics Christmas, I’ve never been able to get in to Love & Rockets.

For Love and Rockets, I always recommend starting with the 2nd collection and carrying on from there in order of publication. If it finally starts to click for the reader, they'll want to go back to the first collection eventually, but I think it's a bit of an outlier in relation to the others.

I've read four volumes into Love and Rockets. I enjoyed it and remember a surprising amount about the plots and characters (I usually have a terrible memory), but I never felt a great compulsion to keep going with the series. Now, three years later, I'm dabbling with picking it up again, but it's more a warm like for the series than a passionate love.
They write very real/complex characters. You either keep wanting to come back to those characters or you don't.

I sorta want to post every single day what I read, to hold myself accountable. I guess many of you just update your first post in the yearly thread? Any other tactics or places? A personal blog or spreadsheet is what I’ve used (or more intended to use but never do) in the past. Not sure what I want, but just looking for motivation.

You could also start your own thread for that, if you like. Whatever sparks joy, really. At the end of the day, jut don't make it into a job for yourself. Only do it if it brings you happiness.

Thanks. I figured daily updates in any thread here would maybe be too intrusive or needy or something. A personal thread would likely be easiest for me, and keep me checking the forum daily instead of the monthly it’s been lately. Plus everyone else could ignore it easier. Hmm, I’ll think it on some more, but likely keep it here one way or the other.

So long as you are following The Rules of The Road and aren't derailing someone else's thread, the rest isn't your problem. Post what you like. If folks enjoy it, GREAT. If they don't, no problem. A daily update would absolutely be on-topic here.

I keep track of what I read on Google documents and just copy and paste it to this forum at the end of the month.

There's the What Classic Comics Have You Read Lately thread and the What Modern Comics Have You Read Lately threads that you could post daily in, which wouldn't derail the threads because that is the point of the thread. Some people post there on a regular basis, some with comments on what they read, others with just a note they have read it.
For me, I update my initial post via edits nearly every day, and then I copy and paste each month's list into another document at the end of the month. I then note my tally and the highlights of the month in a post in this thread.
But it's whatever works for you.

I have my own files going of what I read and view each month, so usually I wait until the end of the month and then copy and paste them, sometimes with modifications to make the posts here more succinct - like for example in my own file I had the individual volumes of Gideon Falls listed one after another on separate lines because I was adding them in as I finished each one, but here I condensed all that down to one line, "Gideon Falls vol 2 - 6", or something like that.
I really like being able to look back and see what I read or watched in January 2016, or what have you. I only wish I had started doing this years earlier, because I'm often unsure now when exactly I read a certain book or comic, if it isn't something I read when it was brand new on the shelves.

My main forum is for movies mostly, and we have monthly viewing challenges with a set genre each month. The lists get pretty creative and we’ve been doing it like 15-20 years now. Tried to do the same with comics but it didn’t really take off. It is nice to be able to read old posts/threads and see what the forum zeitgeist was at certain posts; or just what I was watching. But yeah, I should post my lists here and start that history. Better late than never.
