Last day to cast your vote. Looks like Incal is the front-runner, in which case I need to decide which edition I want to read this time-I have the three volume Epic Comics edition, which is the edition I read when I discovered the series, and the most recent all-in-one HC edition from Les Humanoids. Assuming it isn't a re-read, I voted SSoC. I might have voted the Incal if mrp hadn't mentioned that that would be a re-read. Not that I'm against re-reading - I do it myself quite often - but I think it's good to discover something new: your old favourites will always be there for you when you need them. The Incal is one of those stories I discover something new in every time I read it. If I am not discovering something new when I reread (for any book) it quickly becomes one I stop revisiting except when some nostalgic whim hits me. The best stories offer something new every time you read them (part of it is because you continued to grow and change as a person since the last reread so perspectives are different, part of it is that you have a basic familiarity with the narrative and can dive deeper into the layers of the story and the craft in the writing-if it has layers to offer; part of it is just becoming a better reader over time with more practice and picking up on things you missed the first time (or previous times) reading it). -M

Whatever you choose, do not read Conan the barbarian #100-150 unless you're stuck on a desert island and have already counted all the coconuts in the trees. That run stands out in the list as a rotten orange would in a brand new fruit basket.
While issue 100 is a classic (as it's the climax of a storyline begun four years earlier), the following issues go from merely fair to absolutely dismal. Classic writer Roy Thomas left the mag with issue 115, and his successors (J.M. DeMatteis, Bruce Jones and Michael Fleisher) had no clue about what made the character work. Expect flying horses, Olympic games with giant monsters, ninjas, and cities built on clouds.
"Know, o prince, that after the reign of Roy Thomas and before the rise of Jim Owsley, there was an age best unmentioned".

"Know, o prince, that after the reign of Roy Thomas and before the rise of Jim Owsley, there was an age best unmentioned". It was supposed to be 101-150. I am reading through the entire run, and just finished 1-100, so 101-150 is next up. I own the entire run, there are parts I've never read before (same with SSOC), so I am going to get to those books, but part of the reason for the poll was I was thinking of taking a small break from the read through, so I weighed options, but I was also hesitant to stop, since sometimes when I am reading a run and take a break, I never get back to it, so I included the run as an option. Depending on the size of the run that "wins" I may read 1 or 2 runs before getting back to Conan 101-150, or I may start on it before the three days off are done. -M

Ok so the poll locked at midnight on New Year's Eve, and there was some late voting. We had a two way tie for 1st place between The Incal and Jonny Quest. Savage Sword #1-20 took 3rd place and a whole passel of books had 1 or 2 votes. So I will try to at least start the top 3 vote-getters in January, and if I have thoughts/comments on them I will post in the What Classic Comics Have You Read Lately thread since review threads are just not my jam.

A lot of good choices here. I want to read Savage Sword of Conan myself, so that’s a good one. I’m currently reading Marvel’s Tarzan. I’d read a bunch of them before and enjoyed it. Jonny Quest and Power of the Atom are pretty good, and Further Adventures of Indiana Jones is very good, especially the first two issues (John Bryne) and the issues written by Dave Michelinie. The last few issues aren’t so good, and the couple of fill-in issues during Michelinie’s run aren’t so good, but the rest of the series is excellent.

Dipped my toe into Jonny Quest tonight, reading the first 3 issues. I think I read the first 10 or so before but got sidetracked and never finished the run. Hoping to get through it all plus the Jezebel Jade mini as well this time.

I missed the poll completely, but then again I've spent most of the holidays from 12/23 through today (1/3) away from the computer and forums, So I haven't been on here much (or anywhere else for that matter) lately.
Nevertheless, looks like some good recommendations were made, and I'd go along with Jonny Quest and SMT. I would have also recommended the '87 Spectre run, but then again I'm biased toward the character.
Happy reading, mrp!

Nevertheless, looks like some good recommendations were made, and I'd go along with Jonny Quest and SMT. I would have also recommended the '87 Spectre run, but then again I'm biased toward the character. Happy reading, mrp! Spectre is in my top 3-4 favorite DC characters (along with Phantom Stranger, Doctor Fate and Hawkman); the exact order of those 4 varies depending on mood though. I read the first year or so of the '87 run as it came out, and that's what turned me on to the character. I then got the Wrath of the Spectre Baxter series reprinting the Fleischer/Aparo run, and loved it too, but it was the Ostrander series that sealed the deal for me. I'm hoping to get to a chunk of the books listed over the course of the year, as my mood strikes me, I was just indecisive with what to start with and whether to just persist with my Conan the Barbarian read through, or take a short break for something else, which is why I decided to try the poll. I knew I had three days off in a row and could get a start on whatever I ended up reading, and I have to an extent, but I have also been catching up on my backlog of recent books and alternating between the two novels I am reading (Book 5 of the Wheel of Time and Charles Saunders Imaro), so I haven't made as much progress as I hoped. -M

Finished The Incal this evening/morning and am a little more than a third of the way through the Jonny Quest run. I will be moving on to some of the other runs listed as options over the next few weeks.

Well I finished the top two vote-getters (The Incal and Comico's Jonny Quest) and got a start on another entry that garnered zero votes (Conan the Barbarian #101-150, I've gotten through 125). I still need to read the 3-issue Jezebel Jade mini to complete all the Comico Jonny Quest I own (I am missing 1 issue of Jonny Quest Classics), but I read the 31 issue main series, the two specials and 2 of the 3 Jonny Quest Classics issues.
The next top vote-getter was SSOC #1-20, which I hope to get to soon. Then it's a 3-way tie between Sandman Mystery Theatre, the '87 Spectre series and Brubaker's Captain America (maybe the start of Falcon and the Winter Soldier will be the kick in the pants I need to dig out the trades for this run I own). SMT will be the one that I dive into first, I pulled the first 12 issues out and will start them soon. There was one series I meant to put in the poll but missed, which was Doctor Strange #57-81 (the tail end of the series that started in '74, I had gotten through #56 in the 4 Essential volumes but hadn't dug out the issues to finish the run. I started it last month (Feb) and got through 57-62, which was the Stern penned Dracula saga. I will be moving forward with that one too. It'll take me a fair bit to get through those, and a few other things not in the poll that the mood has struck me to dive in to, so I doubt I will be getting to much else form the poll for a while. We'll see though, the mood may strike me differently in a week or so.
