Aquaman #64. Written by Kelly Sue DeConnick. Art by Miguel Mendonca. After a two issue break to focus on Aqualad DeConnick returns to wrap up her 2 year run on Aquaman. And it looks like she is wrapping things up with an epic battle. Arthur faces off once again against Orm for Atlantis. DeConnick had a bit of a rough start on this title but quickly found her voice and told great stories about Aquaman & his allies. She has been blessed to have great art by Robson Rocha, Miguel Mendonca, and a few others on fill in issues. I have really enjoyed her time on Aquaman and look forward to her finale next issue. I am also glad DC did not cancel this title as it has been one of my favorites in the last several years. 8/10.

Daredevil #23. Written by Chip Zdarsky. Art by Marco Checchetto. Zdarsky continues his classic run as he sets up a new status quo for DD. Foggy is trying to keep him out of jail. Fisk is attempting to run the city both as mayor and leading the illegal criminal families. Great concepts and ideas that Zdarsky has been developing at a nice pace to build to an epic story. And any issue that has Spider-Man stop by for moral support is a 👍 7/10.

Iron Man #2. Written by Christopher Cantwell. Art by CAFU. Tony continues to try and convince the world that he's changed his rich guy ways. He takes on Arcade and Absorbing Man. Also Cardiac shows up and Hellcat helps out Tony. A second issue with the "new" street level Tony/Iron Man and so far so good. I love the inclusion of Hellcat. I like this direction. 7/10.

Yeah, this was another really solid issue. I absolutely loved the beginning; seeing Tony square off against Absorbing Man not only gave us some fun action scenes but the back and fourth dialogue was pretty funny which made it so the action didn't overwhelm the over all story. Hellcat's use as a co-lead to the book continues to be a great choice as well, providing a conscious to Tony's playboy attitude and bringing in a great touch of humor to balance out Tony's soul searching. 8/10

And the art by CAFU is great Yeah, she's written really well in general and is a lot more than just a skirt for Tony to chase. And the art is glorious, I loved how CAFU drew Absorbing man after touching Tony's armor, that gold look really looked almost like the original Iron Man suit.

Werewolf by Night #1Written by Taboo and Benjamin Jackendoff Art by Scott Eaton Summary: Jake(the new Werewolf by Night) wants to protect his people, but who will protect him from the monster within? Plot: Just in time for Halloween Taboo(from the Black Eyed Peas) and Benjamin Jackendoff deliver a new twist on one of my favorite Marvel horror characters. All in all I was a little bit disappointed, it's not that it's a terrible book by any stretch but rather it's just a book that did not live up to my expectations, either. Over all, my main complaint is that the story needs some work and needs to give the reader something to grasp onto. There are some interesting ideas introduced and I liked the Native American twist to the mythology and what little we saw of the characters was decent but it skips past all that to get to the "mystery" around the pharmaceutical company. If the story had been paced slower and developed the setting and characters more this easily could have been a home run, but instead it just barely squeeks onto first base earning at least one more look but little else. Art: The art fares a bit better, but still not as dynamic and eye-catching as I was hoping for. This was a book that needed a real sense of mood and someone used to the unique visual language of horror comics and instead it had the simplicity of a slightly basic action comic which just didn't fit the concept at all. Grade:6/10

Dune: House Atreides #1Written by Brian Herbet and Kevin J. Anderson Art by Dev Pramanik Summary: In the years leading up to Dune we see the beginning of the end of House Atreides and the exploration of Arrakis. Plot: I, like a lot of other Dune fans I know, have a serious love/hate relationship with the series, especially its continuation after Herbet's death so it shouldn't be surprising that I had some serious trepidation about this adaption by Brian Herbert and Kevin J Anderson. I love the world of Dune and have always found it odd that it hadn't regularly crossed over into comics like Star Trek and Star Wars as comics have the ability to do deliver a cinematic experience with an unlimited effects budget so the realization of that wish had me greatly excited...but that the book was so heavily tied to Kevin Anderson and Brian Herbet and based on a prequel that was never needed definitely gave me cold feet. That said, I'm really glad I picked this up as it really hit the spot since the film was moved back. In this introductory issue Herbet and Anderson really delivered a solid hook for the book giving the readers a real sense of grandeur present in the worlds of Dune and setting up the various intertwined character dramas that have always been a hallmark of the series. I don't know how the book would read for someone not already familiar with Dune as it glosses over who the families are a little bit, and the nature of space travel in the world but for a returning reader like me it was just right. Art: I was initially let down slightly by the art as I was so in love by the look Jae Lee gave us on the cover but once I settled in I started to really appreciate Pramanik's style. I really liked the unique attention he gave to the styles of clothing worn by the various families; it really gave you the sense of a wider world with its own diverse cultures and peoples wich really drew me into the world. Grade:9/10

TMNT #110Written by Sophie Campbell Art by Jodie Nishijima Summary: Raphael and Alopex enjoy a date night in Mutant Town while Leo infiltrates Old Hob's base and learns his plans. Plot: This was a bit of a mixed bag for me, but not really because of any one element from the issue itself. Campbell continues to truly excel in the more intimate character moments; delivering us both an excellent adult look at the relationship between Raph and Alopex and a great look at Leo's softer side at being a leader as he commends the young weasel triplets for being able to follow him with out his knowing. However, when it comes to the bigger picture Campbell really falters, these last ten issues have had some truly great character moments but there has been no real hint at a cohesive larger plan which is in strict contrast to the previous 150+ issues(if one counts the plethora of minis and one shots) which were so tightly plotted. So it's not that the writing is really weak in the issue but rather a wish for something than slice of life stories; that kind of storytelling is great in its own right but after ten issues I'm feeling like I need something more especially considering all the dangling threads about the Foot Clan, Karai, the Utroms and heck even how the wider wold regards the existence of Mutant Town. With the way ended with Leo and the weasel tots rushing back to the Splinter Clan Dojo hopefully we see a more coherent direction for the book in the coming issues. Art: I just have to say that that I love Nishijima's take on the Turtles. They're characters with these big, open, rubbery faces and yet she is able to portray honest to goodness emotional expression with a real, naturalistic subtleness that would just seem impossible to do. The way that Raph and Alopex look at eachother as they mount the motorcycle after their date is just pure magic, their feelings for eachother are on full display with out a single word uttered. It's just perfect from start to finish. Grade:7/10

I grabbed this today as a consolation prize when my local store didn't have 'TMNT: Last Ronin'. It was... ok I guess. I'm not a big fan of having 4th wall-ish winks at the reader.. and there's quite a few of those. While I guess I can see why Tony is a self-loathing mess, it's not really a character I particularly want to read about. Makes me sad. As far as the story goes, it was kinda fun, but also awfully random. And did they need to power up Absorbing Man for a WWE match? Seems a bit much.

The one that really jumped out at me is why Hellcat says 'Hey, I really enjoy being your friend who points out your flaws' or some such. There were a couple other things that just didn't make sense for characters to say out loud... I guess it could be lousy writing and not on purpose, but either way it annoyed me.
I'll admit I didn't get go into it with good expectations, though, so maybe that was a bit of the problem.

That doesn't really scream breaking the fourth wall to me, just a gentle teasing comment but your mileage may vary.
