Adventureman #1Written by Matt Fraction Art by Rachel and Terry Dodson Summary: When Claire and her son Tommy make there way to the end of Adventureman's thrilling novel they find the end is only the beginning. Plot: You want to know why I love pulp stories? It's their unfailing ability to take me to a new world and instantly make me smile. No matter the genre, from characters like the Shadow and Doc Savage to Zorro and everything in-between I think that is the underlying element that pins them together; that sense of unadulterated excitement and it's exactly that feeling that made me love this first issue of Fraction's series from the moment I gazed at the very first page. Fraction ticks all the boxes: over the top action? Check. Over the top, sensational melodrama? Check. Snappy, fast paced dialogue? Check. And on top of that with the life of a single mother just trying to raise her son getting turned upside down when that pulpy world of fiction invades their life gives it all a real sense of heart. Art: This is the book the Dodsons were born to make, their glossy, stylized look just brings the whole world to life. From the blimps, planes and other worldly villains to the homey chaos of Claire's family dinner table everything just shines. Grade:9/10

Legion of Super-Heroes #6. Written by Brian Michael Bendis. Art by Ryan Sook. Another issue that has some great glimpses into what could elevate this series into a great LoSH. Ideas like Gold Lantern and Monster Boy are thrown out there in brief moments but never expanded on. That has been a problem with this series since the beginning. Bendis really needs a co-writer (or a decent editor) to rein in his pacing problems. I see so much potential here with great ideas and concepts but the presentation has killed any interest in this series relaunch. However the art has been top notch. 5/10.

My LCS also got their copies of Hawkman and Shazam. Hawkman was ok. It was a flashback tale set during the plaque years. Shazam was a pretty cool team up with Batman. I believe this will be the new creative team. If so they were pretty good.

I've not read a whole lot of Matt Fraction, but Terry and Rachael Dodson art; I'm sold. Guess I'll swing by the comic shop (if it's open, I haven't been by since the lockdown) and grab a copy.
Synopsis sounds good too. Guess I need to come in here and see what's going on in new comics more often.

Going on my to buy list and check it out ASAP. That means an LCS excursion Friday after work for the 1st time in over 5 months. This will feel strange for certain...

Yes, Shazam was good with Batman and the Scarecrow. Hawkman not as good this month, but still decent.
Legion stumbled a little this issue with pacing and the Big Fight Scene. Still loving the series and anxious to learn more about our new members.

I'm a big Fraction fan, his Iron Fist run is probably one of my top ten runs of all time of any comic.

An great example of how to relaunch a title (or a character) and do something new and exciting, while respecting what had gone on before and building on it rather than simply side-stepping it or trashing it completely. (The Iron Fist TV series might not have been good, but I did cheer at the final scene, with Danny suddenly revealing and shooting Orson's guns!)

I always tend to give Brubaker the credit for that Iron Fist run, solely on the basis that I like most of Brubaker's work, and I like very little of Fraction's, so I assume he was the driving force on the plot.

It's actually pretty much the other way around: they did the work 50/50 for the first six issues, but afterwards Marvel wanted Brubaker to step away to and focus on his other titles, so they did the basic plot together, then Fraction would do the complete first draft and Brubaker edited some scenes.

So much batshit crazy stuff filling this book from cover to cover. A lot to take in (and it will need multiple reads to fully digest it all), but I loved it. -M
