And it has fan favorite Robby the Robot (no offense to Lost in Space's B9 or Threepio and Artoo) and one of if not the only science fiction movie (back in the day) where the rocket ship is actually a saucer. That is usually reserved for the aliens or villains! And that ginchy synthesizer soundtrack really stands out! So many elements of the movie have been "borrowed" for television shows and other movies over time that those who haven't seen Forbidden Planet might know just how valuable a resource the movie is for writers and creators today. On my watch list for when time allows for a leisurely viewing next weekend.

Sunday afternoon managed to watch 2 more Outer Space movies while cleaning around the homestead. Gorath, 1962 from Toho studios will provide many glimpses of familiar faces and special effects for those who grew up with Godzilla movies. The JX-1 Hawk spaceship is Japan's most famous rocket ship on a 9 month space journey investigating Saturn. While in space they are given a new mission as a giant mega dense collapsed star given the name Gorath has entered our Solar System. The JX-1 is caught in the gravity of Gorath and destroyed so the United Nations unveil a plan to save Earth from Gorath colliding with us. You get plenty of rocket ship fun and Earthly destruction as Gorath advances ever closer. All of Earth's nations unite and Earth is moved out of Gorath's path and humanity is saved!
War of the Satellites from 1958 finds an "Unknown Force" declaring war against Earth and the United Nation's (there goes that bunch of nosy folks again) disobey the warnings and launch a\the world's 1st satellite into space. Being a Roger Corman low budget affair we get very little space action and lots of talking in empty hallways/offices which are meant to be the rocket/satellite. Rather hokey but kind of typical 50/60's science fiction from Hollywood at the time.

One of my favorite "newer" (I had to do a double take when I saw it was made in 2009!) sci-fi films is Moon by Duncan Jones and starring Sam Rockwell. I thought it was a thoughtful film when I first saw it but the way it deals with cloning and especially the greed of big corporations is if anything even more timely now.

Sat down and watched another "newer" film, this time 2007's Sunshine. The plot is admittedly a little far fetched(it's about a group of astronauts on a mission to reignite the sun with a giant nuke) the characters are fantastic and their sense of desperation is really compelling.

In memory of Kirk Douglas passing, watched Saturn 3 last night. Remember seeing this on the big screen in 1980. Hector the robot made for one nasty villainous steel beast of destruction. A really dark and violent movie that scratches my B movie itch every time!

You get to see Kirk romping around in space with Farrah Fawcett through a sci-fi horror Alien style rip-off. And Harvey Keitel being his usual bad self.

Continuing with the Old Fogey's in Outer Space motif: watched Sean Connery playing Space Cowboy/Marshal in Outland from 1981. A nice under-rated space western horror/sci-fi/thriller/cop story. Another B movie Gem that I adore. Great special effects mix along with some cheesy ones and Connery actually plays off well as the bitter Marshal that won't play along with the expectation that he is so corrupt that he can be bought off and instead does his duty.
Man, does Hollywood like sticking the old guys far off into Space. Send Douglas off to Saturn, Connery to Jupiter. Just like some of the retirement towns around Phoenix where the oldies but goodies are shipped off away from the younger folks. Sun City, full of golf carts, golf courses and estate sales when you croak...

Another weekend and another pair of Outer Space movies. This time around with a trip back to 1997! Saturday evening watched Event Horizon, 1997 with Laurnece Fishburne, Sam Neill, Kathleen Quinlan and Joely Richardson on a space rescue mission to Neptune. The experimental black hole engine driven ship they are hoping to rescue people from instead find a giant massacre of the crew. An evil presence has used the warp driven ship to possess and destroy. A scary and unsettling horror sci-fi movie which has built a strong cult following even though it was considered a bomb on release.
Sunday was bug hunting (rather more like squishing/slaughtering) with 1997's Starship Troopers. Over the top gooey gory fun with Casper Van Dien, Neil Patrick Jarris, Denise Richards, Dina Meyer Clancy Brown, Brenda Strong, Jake Busey, Michel Ironside. This is a movie that takes brings to the big screen your childhood plastic spacemen and pits them against giant alien bugs which you would have squished, melted, burnt or exploded with your firecrackers. A true B movie concept given an A budget for CGI effects. A simple sit back and watch everything get blasted (bugs and military) gung ho action fest. Don't over think this one, just enjoy the ride. Inspired 2 lesser spin off direct to video movies (which are pure B movie fun in their own ways.

The fact that it was and continues to be taken at face value speaks to the very vapidity the movie skewers." That's how I saw it - I laughed thru a lot of the movie.

Oh hell yes, we laughed all throughout and on the way home as well as talking about all the irony and satiric goings on which populate the movie. I have had several dinner showings with friends where we turn off our brains and enjoy the visceral aspects and have had several dinner showings where we sit and debate and discuss all the socio-political/military commentary.

Final 2 Outer Space movies for February (too much to do rest of this week) over the weekend were Battlestar Galactica the feature film movie from 1979 which combined the 1st Two (or three?) episodes into a larger than life Saturday matinee. Remember seeing it upon the big screen and it was..... AWESOME! This shows the potential of Galactica which was squandered away once it became a weekly series. Kept as mini-series of 2 hour "movies" given time and budget the story might have been much better. But in this original we get great designs and effects along with interesting characters and story.
Last but not least: Forbidden Planet from 1956 and just as much a classic today as when it premiered. Somebody was smoking a bit of the Mary Jane while reading Shakespeare's the Tempest and the resulting hallucinatory movie was born. Lots of treats for the eyes (I include Anne Francis alongside Robby, the space ship and special effects) and thoughts for the mind to be found here. A very wild and original score/soundtrack highlights the mind and Id boggling movie as well. This is a MUST see for any science fiction fan.
