For my next selection I went with Planes, Trains and Automobiles. I've always been a fan of both John Candy and Steve Martin so to see them both on screen together was a treat. I was thinking about it today and there are a lot of comedies that involve cars, and I wonder what it is about travel that lends itself to laughs. Might be that for many of us (my family for certain) poorer folks the car was used for shopping trips as nd vacation. Longer type drives enclosing a family (5 in my case) in close proximity for an extended AZ mount of time. Having 5 different personalities and tempers together for more than just a few minutes without any way to escape or avoid is instant mixture of volatility waiting to erupt. Torment and pain is funny. Once you figure out how to create humorous havoc among a family it only escalates from there. Punch all the right emotional and mental buttons and sit back laughing your ass off if you are the instigator creating the chaos. If it pisses off your family, its instant fun guaranteed for long trips.

This Saturday morning I was East bound and down riding along with Smokey and the Bandit 1 and 2. Fast and fun filled silliness to turn off the stressed brain. I was lucky to being of an age that me and my buddies were able to enjoy the adventures of Burt and Sally and Jerry Reed as they were chased all over the interstate by Jackie Gleason.
And what a classic car in that gorgeous black Firebird? Man everyone was racing around town afterwards in one. Got to believe that Pontiac sales were way up along with insurance rates and police violations due to Burt's movies!

Saturday morning spent cooking up some lunch for next few days (chicken and Sloppy Joe's) while watching a pair of made for television movies: 1997 Dukes of Hazzard Reunion and 2000's Dukes of Hazzard in Hollywood. Simple fun loving good ol' boys not meaning any harm while helping out others in need. In the iconic red with rebel flagged roof top General Lee!
Nothing new added here other than fun of seeing the cast after several years who have aged but not really grown up. Which is what escapism through movies is all about for seeing friends you know and adore still doing their thing. The Duke Boy's are as young, vital and eternally necessary just as our comic book heroes. Yeeeeeehaaaaaw

This mornings Saturday matinee is the 1968 classic Bullitt. Featuring classic Hollywood icon actor Steve McQueen who is overshadowed by his even more iconic Ford Mustang Fastback in a classic iconic often mimicked stunt filled amazingly beautiful chase through San Francisco. Do I really need to say more? Think not...

Saved specifically for this final day for viewing in the I Can't Drive 55 August enjoyment. One I consider classic silly fun movie watching featuring stylized fast cars and an even higher body count in crazyily insane ways. Nobody could have done it any better. Ladies and Gentlemen I proudly give you the ULTIMATE car movie: Death Race 2000! From the Master of Cheap and Fast, Roger Corman starring a true B Movie Star in David Carradine alongside a then unknown Sylvester Stallone running rampant across America in a race many have made jokes about, where the race day antics are turned up to 11 (thank you Spinal Tap) as viewers watch drivers rack up high body counts in the ultimate hit and run parody of guilty viewing pleasure of laugh out loud spitting milk out your nose movie!
Is it cheap looking with it it's fiberglass cars and sped up filming? Yes. Is it even cheesier than a 100 jars of Cheez Whiz? Yes. Is it highly dumb, goofy, childish and tasteless? Yes. Does it take delight in uniting 2 well known childish games of "real" Hot Wheels destruction (what child hasn't ever done this) and the family vacation counting game of "fictional" running over people as you drive cross country? Yes! Combining all the above with the additional thrills, laughs, parody and humor made this movie an instant Drive-In Theater attraction and cult movie favorite for millions of viewers.
Watched this with friends at the Drive-In for many summer nights. Recorded off HBO and watching until the VHS tape was worn thin. Now have it on DVD alongside with the 3 updated sequels (far too serious and post apocalyptic dark) and they make for a day long marathon of violence, speed and belly laughs. A life long political satire movie of which I fully admit to enjoying. There, I said It!!! And I had hoped to watch 2 more but job hunts and calls got in the way. Wanted to see the classics The Great Race and Those Daring Young Men in Their Jaunty Jalopies!

Looks like it, maybe we take a break and just do it as a mini event in October for Halloween. It was fun while it lasted

I would love to be active but I honestly struggle to find time to watch more than one or two movies in a month. And at that number I can’t guarantee they will meet the theme. That’s why I tend to clock in with shorts because I can fit them in the corners of time.

Same here. Partly I think it's the movie theatres shutting down, in particular the local repertory cinema, that's made a big drop in my movie-watching. I knew I saw a lot of stuff there but never realised how vast a majority of the movies I watch were at that venue, even more than on tv at home. It's just 3 blocks away, so very convenient. They've since re-opened but I haven't ventured forth as of yet.
I have been seeing one or two things a month on tv/computer monitor at home but lately none of them have really fit the subject for that month. But I should have mentioned them in the classic film thread, will try to be more consistent about doing that.
