On this day 25 years ago, the PPV Heroes of Wrestling aired, taking place at the Casino Magic Hotel in Mississippi. I haven’t seen this. I have no idea if it ever got a videotape release. And after hearing about a certain incident involving Jake Roberts, and having read some dire reviews of it, I think this is one I’ll continue to avoid. This was the card: The Samoan Swat Team vs. Marty Jannetty & Tommy Rogers Greg Valentine vs. George Steele 2 Cold Scorpio vs. Julio Fantastico The Bushwhackers vs. Nikolai Volkoff & The Iron Sheik Tully Blanchard vs. Stan Lane Abdullah the Butcher vs. One Man Gang Jimmy Snuka vs. Bob Orton, Jr. Jake Roberts & Yokozuna vs. King Kong Bundy & Jim Neidhart I’m guessing they wanted to play to the nostalgia crowd with this card, but something like the Bushwhackers vs. Nikolai Volkoff & Iron Sheik was hardly a dream bout (sorry, guys), and would have been more entertaining in 1987 or something. There’s a good review here: slamwrestling.net/index.php/1999/10/11/heroes-ppv-a-disappointment

On this day 35 years ago, the WWF’s first UK live event took place at the London Arena. It aired on Sky One. Sadly, I cannot find a poster for it.
This was the card:
Koko B. Ware vs. Boris Zhukov Bret Hart vs. Dino Bravo Hacksaw Jim Duggan vs. Honky Tonk Man The Rockers vs. The Rougeau Brothers Paul Roma vs. The Brooklyn Brawler WWF World Champion Hulk Hogan vs. Randy Savage
This was a pretty solid card. I would say Hogan and Savage had their best matches during 1989, both here and in France.
Bret Hart vs. Dino Bravo was a really solid big man vs. technical wrestler match which ended - surprisingly for me - with Bravo getting the pin. I really wanted Bret to win this one.
Some of the matches here were released on Coliseum’s World Tour 89/90 video.

It was circulated as a bootleg and I have seen images of dvd packaging; but can't tell if there was ever a legitimate commercial release. If memory serves, the buys for the PPV were pretty low, as they were for other indie PPV attempts, in that era, like the Women of Wrestling single PPV (David McLane's group, with Selena "Bambi" Majors and Barry Orton, as a manager) and a couple of others.

I’m still pissed off that Survivor Series will probably never feature elimination matches again, instead the vastly overrated War Games concept (sorry to all fans of that gimmick) is probably gonna be the “theme” of that PPV/PLE forever.
I like the elimination matches because it gives a huge number of wrestlers an opportunity, it’s perfect for starting and ending feuds, and I think its loss is a sad one.
I mean, there were moments that were entertaining in and of themselves even if they didn’t lead anywhere, e.g. Bad News Brown abandoning his partners two years in a row. But there were times when meaningful things happened, e.g. the double-turn between Demolition and Powers of Pain, or the dissension between the Rockers in 1991.

I'm NOT liking the current KO storyline at all....making him go rogue and attacking his mates like Randy and Cody....no, no, no....

I'm sure I did in the late 80s/early 90s because I remember seeing it for rent many times, but have zero memories of playing it. I don't think it was considered to be very good

On this day 35 years ago, King of the Ring ‘89 took place in Providence, Rhode Island (Providence Civic Center).
Tito Santana won the tournament by pinning Rick Martel.
Participants were Santana, Martel, Brutus Beefcake, Akeem, Hercules, Jim Neidhart, Bushwhacker Butch, Warlord, Bad News Brown, Bill Wood(!), Bushwhacker Luke, Nikolai Volkoff, Jimmy Snuka, The Barbarian, Red Rooster, and Haku.
I presume this was untelevised and no footage exists? (Video cameras aside)
All of us know that the KOTR tournament began in 1985 before being “upgraded” to PPV in 1993. Bizarrely, there weren’t any KOTR tournaments in 1990 or 1992. I wonder why that was?
I’d love to see any footage of this. Never give up hope. I managed to see some of Hulk Hogan’s late 1993 European WWF tour matches thanks to YouTube (footage wasn’t very good, though). Perhaps some footage of these KOTR tournaments exists.

Indeed. I do feel face and heel turns are done too often now, I mean, how many times did Big Show turn? Have they ever had two faces or two heels have a storyline fight where neither of them turned? There have been some occasions. In 1996, Meng and the Barbarian had a falling out while members of the Dungeon of Doom, which led to a match - with neither turning. Yokozuna and King Mabel had a PPV match at In Your House 4. I can’t recall if there was a particularly extensive storyline prior to the match, but there was some storyline - and neither turned, although Yokozuna turned a few months later (not related to King Mabel).
