The ICW Years:
24.) According to their "official history, as given on tv, Lanny defeated Joe Banek, in San Francisco, in May of 1978, for the ICW World Hwt Championship. However, there was never a match between them, nor did the promotion exist. Joe Banek was a wrestler who was also trained by Angelo's trainer, Karl Pojello, who owned a gym, in Chicago. Based on information at Wrestling Data and elsewhere, Banek's career lasted between about 1942 and 1955. The Poffos went to work for Emil Dupree's Atlantic Grand Prix promotion, in the Maritimes region, of Canada (Nova Scotia, Newfoundland, New Brunswick, Prince Edward Island) in 1978 and they introduced and International Heavyweight Championship, which Lanny allegedly defeated Joe Banek for, in San Francisco. Randy then defeated Lanny for the International title, in Halifax, Nova Scotia. When Angelo started up International Championship Wrestling, he used the Maritimes history as the background for the ICW World title, as Randy is the ICW champion, on tv. They may have done some switching of the title, in different locations, within ICW, as the title records are based on card advertisements and results clippings and some of them listed Lanny or Randy as champion. So, Lanny was the first International champion, in a likely phantom victory, then trades it to Randy in the Maritimes. They use that history when they do their first tapings, in Lexington, KY, but may have swapped the title at a house show or two. There are also notations of Ronnie Garvin holding it, but that was never shown on the tv. According to the tv shows that I saw, the lineage was Lanny defeats Joe Banek and Randy defeated Lanny and holds the title until losing it to the answer for #35. Ronnie Garvin only held the Southeastern title, on ICW tv.
25.) In ICW, Randy was managed by Steve Cooper, until Cooper had a heart attack or other heart-related problems and became a troubleshooting referee. Cooper also wrestled in the undercard and under a mask, as The Tennessee Stud, as a rib on Ron Fuller. I would also have accepted Izzy Slapowitz, who managed Randy briefly, after Cooper bowed out, before Izzy left the promotion.
26.) The Canadian Bumblebee was Crusher Broomfield, under a mask, to hide the fact from Randy Savage. It was part of the larger angle that saw Randy hold the contract for Crusher Broomfield and made him act as his stooge. Crusher started to rebel, with the aid of Ronnie Garvin and a mysterious man aided Garvin and his allies and making a fool of Randy, including by wrestling under the mask, as The Canadian Bumblebee, complete with black and yellow trunks, like the ones Angelo used to wear, in The Devil's Duo and Angelo and Lanny wore, in Detroit. Garvin later faced Savage in a match to free Crusher from his contract. These were recycled angles from Knoxville, originally used for Crusher Jerry Blackwell.
27.) You can see what was in the mysterious box, labelled "CB", in the opening titles of the ICW tv show......
(at the 1:10 mark)
...A midget wrestler (Little Cupid) came out of the box, in a bumblebee costume, and ran around the ring.
28.) Here is the real of Ronnie Garvin and Leaping Lanny's entrant in the Ms Macho Man contest......
...Pistol Pez Whatley, hogtied, in drag. This led to an angle where Ronnie Garvin was absent from tv, then turned up at the end, to rescue someone and was attacked by Pez and The Great Tio, who worked over his back, with a lead pipe. This was done to cover for a real back injury that Garvin suffered, which left him with a large subdermal hematoma and the need to wear a brace for several weeks. Garvin wrestled in a singlet, during that period, with the brace visible, underneath, which was then attacked by Pez and others, during matches.
29.) The actual "winner" of the Ms Macho Man contest was Miss Brenda Britton, who was married to Hustler Rip Rogers and had been his valet, when he was The Disco Kid. She was a stripper (and looked the part) and knew how to play to the crowd. She was Rip's valet in Southeastern and Kansas City, where fans who chant "Fleabag" at her, which Rip said didn't bother her at all, as she would encourage it, knowing that it meant that they were over.
Here is Brenda, with Randy......
and an older photo of her......
30.) Randy had a run-in with Memphis wrestling's Superstar Bill Dundee, outside a gym, allegedly tipped off about Dundee wearing Macho Man trunks, by Candi Devine, who was an ICW fan and who broke into wrestling in that region, with Dale "TNT" Mann, who promoted outlaw shows in Kentucky and Tennessee, across the Ozark region. Dundee supposedly reached into the trunk of his car and pulled out a pistol, which Randy got away from him. According to Rip Rogers, Pez Whatley was there, as was George Weingeroff and Angelo came along and helped defuse the situation.
31.) This was probably an unfair question, as you had to have seen ICW tv and I have not come across this moment, on Youtube. Ronnie Garvin did an expose, on ICW tv, revealing that he had followed the Miser out to his car and took down the license plate and ran a check on it and found out it was registered to Angelo Poffo, Randy and Lanny's father. he had already done an expose that revealed Lanny and Randy were brothers.
32.) After the reveal, Angelo did a stunt during an ICW show. For the entire broadcast, he could be seen in a corner, doing situps, throughout the hour-long show. His feet were held by Leilani Kai, the future WWF Women's Champion, who defeated Wendy Richter for the title, before losing it back to her. Kai did some matches for the Poffos, wrestling Debbie Combs, the future NWA Women's Champion. At the time, Debbie was dating Randy and wrestled independently, while Kai was booked by Moolah. Debbie also teamed with her mother, Cora Combs, who was Elvis Presley's favorite wrestler. Cora also used to work under a mask, as Lady Satan, on ICW cards, wrestling Debbie.
33.) Randy and Lanny were both the ICW World Champion, while Lanny also held the US tag title, the TV title and the Southeastern title. Angelo only held the TV title, as The Miser. He defeated The Great Tio, in a tv bout, as a last minute substitution for Ronnie Garvin, after his injury. He defended the title on tv, against John Ruffen, a Detroit mainstay, not too long before Ruffen's untimely death, in a shooting, in 1982. Ruffen was killed outside a bar, in a dispute. The Miser dropped the title back to The Great Tio, who Lanny defeated to win the title. Lanny then faced Ronnie Garvin, for the Southeastern title, which led to Garvin turning heel and then battling a now babyface Randy Savage for the ICW title, in a cage, in Springfield, IL.
34.) Randy met Elizabeth Huelette at Sentay (or Centay, or something like that) Sports Center, where she worked at the reception desk, according to Rip Rogers. They started dating and were married, in 1984.
35.) Randy dropped the ICW World title, after 3 years as champion, to Golden Boy, Paul Christy. Christy bought the belt from Angelo and promoted some ICW shows, with it, on his own.
36.) Just before Randy came into Memphis, he worked an Omni show, in Georgia, over Thanksgiving. The card had an invitational tournament and Randy was paired up with Magnum TA, which was used on Mid-South tv as part of the angle where Mr Wrestling II turned on Magnum. He had chastised Magnum for teaming with a known villain, like Savage.
