Superman #11:despite the solicitation blurb that something pretty major was going to happen, nothing much happens. Superman stops a bunch of intergalactic war types and that is impressive how they react to him and comply with his requests. Boring Rogol Zaa, General Zod, and Jax-Ur are all in the mix as well. Supergirl shows up at the end and Rogol Zaa begins his umpteenth attempt to take down Superman and company. The art and colors are the best thing about this issue. Art: 10 story: 3

Sabrina the Teen-Age Witch #2: A very Buffy-esque issue as Sabrina discovers monsters running amok in Greendale. Lots of very witty dialog, interesting characters, and Harvey asks Sabrina out...although she is interested in another young fellow (and Harvey too). Very fun issue to read with nice art. 8/10

TMNT: Shredder in Hell #3Story and Art by Mateus Santolouco Summary: As Oroko Saki climbs up the layers of Hell he finally encounters his original incarnation and begins to learn the truth of his destiny. Plot: What has made this recent incarnation of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles my favorite, even better than Eastman and Laird's original run, has been the inclusion of Eastern Mysticism in the origin of the Turtles and I love that this story is delving into that aspect even deeper. The exploration of the Bardo, and the aspects of the Shredder's past lives continues to both enlightening and exciting; the things we learn from past selves and the idea of what destiny is are fascinating and the action makes it move along at a great pace. I can't wait to not only see how the confrontation with Shredders soul plays out in it's own right and how it will effect the new City at War storyline between Karai and the Turtles. Art: It's so ething I didn't think I'd say a few years back but I've really grown to enjoy Santolouco's take on the Turtle's universe. At first I felt the realistic take he brought with him didn't mesh well with the book, but I've really grown to like it so much that I can't imagine the series with out his influence. Grade:10/10

Immortal Hulk #17Written by Al Ewing Art by Joe Bennett Summary: When Banner finds his fat in the fryer he calls on his old pal Joe Fixit for help...and Joe always knew how to deliver the goods. Plot: While I've found the quality of this book often see-saws from issue to issue this was one of the times where we've had a sustained run of quality with this being the third in a row I really enjoyed. From Joe Fixit running around in Bruce's body and the easter egg reference to Star Ship Troopers with the radio active ants there was a lot to like here and the end reveal with a new Abomination definitely has me waning more. Could there have been less running around and more meat to the story? Certainly, but sometimes a fast paced yarn can be fun even if it doesn't give you much progression and this is a good example of how to make that work. Art: With the Hulk running around in Banner's body Bennett didn't have as much to do as he usually does with his strange, gross out style but the scenes where that did come into play like the gamma ants and the Hulk's over blown transformation at the end were as great as always. Grade:7/10

Last Stop on the Red Line #1Written by Paul Mayberry Art by Sam Lofty Summary: When a series of strangulations occurs on Boston's Red Line a serial killer is thought to be on the loose...but could it be worse? Plot: Being from the Boston area and a frequent rider of the Red Line I was initially super stoked for this book to came out when I first read about it but unfortunately after reading reading it all I can say is that it was definitely not, as we are known to say in these parts, wicked pissah. To start with the plot is just horribly muddled from start to finish with things seemingly happening at random for no given reason. I get that one of the characters is a homeless guy with mental issues so what he sees isn't always to be trusted...but he isn't the POV character for the whole story or even present in some of the scenes that make next to no sense so that doesn't explain away the random encounters. And the setting itself isn't much clearer, it starts with what seems to be the Boston Marathon bombing...but then the terms the police use and the technology they have are techno-babble so it's not a contemporary setting at all which makes the allusion to the bombing again random and pointless.
While the previous critiques are legitimate, my last parting shot is perhaps a tad pedantic: The book is called Last Stop on the Red Line, and it even shows a map of the line on the cover...but all the stops actually shown in the book are squarely on the Orange Line. Maybe the book was originally called Last Stop on the Orange Line but the editors thought Red Line would be a more clever allusion to death? I don't know but it bothered me. Art: My pedantic streak above continues to the art as aside from a crude rendition of the Boston Marathon symbol at the start and a brief glimpse of the Old South Church there's nothing to really set this in Boston which was disappointing. But it goes further than that as a lot of the characters are indistinguishable from one another especially when it comes to the female characters; the first victim, the woman who gets off the train just in time and the detective all look pretty much the same with only their clothes helping to identify them as different. And the monster? Well, the less said the better. Grade:2/10

Another crazy week for me so all I can say what I liked and what I didn't like.
Superman: a no for me. Great art but a muddled drawn out boring story line. Ugh!
Aquaman: a pleasant surprise. After the dud the last storyline was this arc is looking better. One thing Aquaman has been blessed with? Good art.
Daredevil: a disappointment. Zdarsky is usually great but his start on DD has been under whelming for me. Great art.
Immortal Hulk: Best this week! The horror continues. Love adding Joe Fixit into the mix! And Bennett has really grown as an artist and made this title his break out work. Just amazing stuff!
