Archie #700.Written by Nick Spencer. Art and Cover by Marguerite Sauvage. I had some trepidation before reading this issue. After all Mark Waid had written some great Archie stories the past 3 years and his run ended with some beautiful art by Audrey Mok. Spencer takes the title in a slightly different direction. It is the end of summer vacation and the gang had gone their separate ways over the summer to different places. Everyone except Archie. Archie is glad to see everyone but seems evasive with his friends especially when they ask what he did over the summer. Everyone is in this issue - Archie, Betty, Veronica, Jughead, Reggie, Moose, Midge, Dilton, Cheryl, Josie. So how did Archie spend his summer? The answer is on the last page... Spencer did a good job with the whole gang. It is similar to Waid's version of Riverdale so it "feels" the same but with a new wrinkle in the life of Archie. The art is also similar in style to the New Riverdale version. The books are now branded Archie Forever. A Betty & Veronica mini series will be coming next month. 8/10.

Project: Super Powers (Chapter 3) #4.Written by Rob Williams. Art by Sergio Davila. Pandora is in orbit above the Earth. Scarab tries to stop the invasion but fails. Samson stands alone on Earth to try and repel the armies of Pandora. The new Spirit of the American Flag lies in a hospital bed. The Black Terror tries to protect her from The Death-Defying Devil who is being controlled by Pandora. It seems this new Spirit is the only one who can stop Pandora... Mixed feelings. I really like this new spin on this concept with Pandora being an alien. And I think the smaller cast of characters helps to make the series better. But I feel like not much happens each issue. And I just found out this series is only 6 issues so I feel we are going to get a "rushed" ending. I hope not. 7/10.

The Immortal Hulk #9. Written by Al Ewing. Art by Joe Bennett and Martin Simmonds. The Absorbing Man is recruited by Shadow Base to stop the Hulk. Meanwhile the Hulk returns to the site of his creation. He tries to fight the creature that he absorbed from Sasquatch. He thinks being at the place of his creation will make him stronger but that is what the creature inside wants! Then Hulk is attacked by (the improved by Shadow Base) Creel. And it looks like the Hulk may lose this fight... And BAM! we get a swerve in the story and it appears it will go in a different direction next issue... Ewing and Bennett continue their horror themed hero version of the Hulk. Another entertaining story although the "gross out" aspect may start to wear thin soon. There is a scene with Creel that I am talking about. 8/10.

Tony Stark: Iron Man #6.Written by Dan Slott. Art by Valerio Schiti. OK now Slott has settled in! IMO Slott had a bumpy start on this title. I felt he was trying too hard to make the title "cute" and "fun". But with this issue he finally has the right tone for the character of Tony Stark. Basically Stark is launching a new VR game that goes horribly wrong in the first day. There is still a fun aspect to the title but it is more subdued and it works better. I also like this new twist where Tony is really fighting with his brain rather than relying on his armor. Much better. 8/10.

I'm disappointed that Dynamite's excellent Project Superpowers haven't gotten better reception.
Haven't read this one yet but I've read the previous issues and really, really liked them.

Archie #700: great set up for the next era of Archie! I loved seeing the gang all together after summer vacation and each of the main characters had their turn in the spotlight. Interesting to see Reggie’s dad appear (perhaps this signals Reggie’s return as a main character). I loved the final scene revealing Archie’s mystery and the upcoming mystery for Jughead. The pacing, story, art are all top notch! Last week I commented on an issue of Iceman that I really couldn’t get into as it was a bit too youthful for me and the writer seemed to be throwing every millennial cliche possible in. Take note Marvel, Nick Spencer shows how to write young characters that appeal to all ages. 10/10

Astonishing X-Men 17 by Rosenberg, Land, Leisten, And D’Armata Unfortunately this title is ending. I really enjoyed it and it was a x title that actually made sense and I could follow, along with recognizable characters. In this final issue, we see just what a hero Havoc truly is. Dazzler has some outstanding moments and we see Warpath’s view of Havoc change. Nice quick scene with Colossus And Kitty (when did she become so unlikable?). I really wish this title would continue, but I’m guessing some of the characters will pop up in the million other x books. 9/10

I wasn't sure where to put this link. It's not important enough for its own thread. It's a blog post by Scipio of The Asborbascon, talking about the trouble a writer can get into when he tries to write characters that are smarter than the writer. And Scipio talks a lot about James Robinson! And Robinson's recent work on Detective Comics! So now you can see why I linked to it on this thread! Riters! Don't be igdolent.Choice quote: I wish I had written that!

Other than that, Immortal Hulk is the best Marvel title of the second half of 2018 with a solid 6/10.
