That first Cloak & Dagger mini-series was good, but less interesting than the duo's earlier appearances in Spectacular Spider-Man IMHO. I think Bill Mantlo was a really underrated writer though. I do like what I've read of Mantlo's Spectacular Spider-Man. Mantlo is somewhat unfairly maligned. Not everything he touched was gold, but he did do some really good stuff. In addition to Spectacular, he did some good stuff in Marvel Team-Up and his Micronauts and Rom are excellent. On the minus side, his Alpha Flight was dreadful.

Because of course the Iron Man of 2020 would announce himself as "The Iron Man of 2020." Especially since he's the only one in the room. One of the most ludicrous pages I've read in quite a while.

He keeps doing it. Tom DeFalco has to be one of the worst scripters ever.

Will he be replaced next year? And on another note, if this is the cutting edge of coolness in contemporary comics, well, fine, but where do modern fans who make fun of old-fashioned comics get the gall to make fun of comics like these...

And on another note, if this is the cutting edge of coolness in contemporary comics, well, fine, but where do modern fans who make fun of old-fashioned comics get the gall to make fun of comics like these... I cut far more slack to comics that were obviously written for and aimed at kids than comics that ostensibly were trying for a more mature audience. I also tend to be far harsher on comics that fans tend to put up on a pedestal for being "mature" or "ahead of their time."

He keeps doing it. Tom DeFalco has to be one of the worst scripters ever. That's because in the future the Covid epidemic has made "...of 2020" synonymous with "extremely scary and dangerous". «This is not just a rogue shark, man, that's like the rogue shark of 2020!» Do I get a no-prize?

I'd forgotten how bad the printing was on the early issues of Crisis on Infinite Earths. And by extension how poor it made the coloring look. Bad enough the story is a mess...the book itself was a mess.

Here's an unusual splash page I ran across researching my Marvel Western thread: So it looks like a "Black Bob Harrigan" story entitled "Last Request", right? Yeah, but this is the one and only appearance of "Black Bob Harrigan", and as the villain of the piece, he dies at the end of the 4-page story! So it's billed like an installment of a "Black Bob Harrigan" feature, but it's just another one-shot Western back-up short.

Bad enough the story is a mess...the book itself was a mess. I don't know if I ever re-read Crisis--if I did, it was before 1990--but halfway through, I went from supporting it to wishing it wasn't happening. Before Crisis, there seemed to be more creative ways of trying to reconcile continuity problems. There were a lot of printing process and tech changes at the time that led to some poor print jobs, not just at DC. I wonder if that, followed by badly done coloring as more was done on the computer, contributed to the loss of readers and lack of new readers in the 90s. A lot of the stuff just wasn't pleasant to look at.

Same here. When I realized they were not leaving any multiverse I lost interest. I don't know why DC won't embrace the multiverse again.

Actually, I think that's Tony Stark's New Year's Day ritual. He puts on a new suit of armor, and yells out loud to himself (in front of a full length mirror) "I am the Iron Man...of [insert year here]".

They have, although we're no longer blessed with a multiverse with neatly labeled Earths that one can visit regularly like seeing one's next door neighbors, or Earths which (more or less) reflect actual comics history.

I'd always thought that the way Paty Cockrum spelled her name was just a stylized way of spelling Patty (kind of like Jimi Hendrix). I just learned today that it rhymes with 'Katie.' This was because I was listening to the latest episode of Scott Edelman's podcast, Eating the Fantastic, in which he talks to Jo Duffy, and she mentioned Cockrum at one point. Otherwise, Eating the Fantastic is a really good podcast, and particularly excellent when he talks to comics creators, like, say, Duffy, or Don McGregor, Larry Lieber, etc.
