I'd always thought that the way Paty Cockrum spelled her name was just a stylized way of spelling Patty (kind of like Jimi Hendrix). I just learned today that it rhymes with 'Katie.' This was because I was listening to the latest episode of Scott Edelman's podcast, Eating the Fantastic, in which he talks to Jo Duffy, and she mentioned Cockrum at one point. Otherwise, Eating the Fantastic is a really good podcast, and particularly excellent when he talks to comics creators, like, say, Duffy, or Don McGregor, Larry Lieber, etc. Makes me wonder how many creators' names I'm mispronouncing. Probably plenty! Moench pronounced like monk, Buscema like boo-shee-mah (at least that what I've read, I think there's more than one version of the "correct" pronunciation), Butch Guice rhymes with "nice", I have no idea how to pronounce Saviuk, Sienkiewicz. etc...

According to Sal himself (in a podcast interview I listened to many years ago), the 'official' way to pronounce the name is Byoo-sema (the last part rhyming with 'Emma'). He also explained that the correct 'ethnic' (i.e. original Italian) pronunciation would be Boo-shema.
In fact, I just did a little Googling; the podcast, at a Hulk fan site called JadeGiant.com, is still available at this link. The bit about the pronunciation is right at the start, about 1 minute in. It's otherwise a really nice interview, well worth a listen - and Buscema has such a great voice, he could have had a second career in broadcasting.

I've been consuming many a podcast the last few months.

I think Moench rhymes with bench, and Sienkiewicz is pronounced Sin-KEV-itch. Every time I see something drawn by Saviuk, I think yuck.

I know I read the Moench = monk thing somewhere, but I can't remember where, so I don't know if it's a reliable source or not.

I've heard that Bill grew up pronouncing his name "sink-uh-wits" until letterer Tom Orzechowski taught him the original Polish pronunciation.

This was recently brought to my attention in a thread at another site, and I found it fascinating. Apparently Kirby's designs for the Demon were based on a character/sequence in Hal Foster's Prince Valiant. Brian Cronin covered this in one of his columns now some 8 years ago. The Foster stuff: Further, another ( Sean Kleefeld) blogger demonstrated Foster seems to have been influenced by the silent Swedish horror film Haxan from 1922 *though it wasn't released in the States until later). Here's a still from Haxan: and a comparison of all three: It's interesting to see the trail of pollination through the years. Of course, Kirby wasn't the only one to swipe from Foster, as many should recognize who swiped this Foster image and where it turned up again with different clothes... though considering that creator, it shouldn't be much of a surprise that he swiped stuff and claimed credit... -M

That's cool. I heard about the Prince Valiant inspiration but had never seen the actual Foster art

I'd seen the one image, the head-shot where the guy is pulling on the mask, but not the others. I like what Kirby did with it.
