Marvel Two-In-One #5.Written by Chip Zdarsky. Art by Valerio Schiti. Cover by Nick Bradshaw. Last issue Ben & Johnny went into the Multiverse in search of the Richards family. They ended up in a world where Doom defeated Galactus & became Galactus himself! That universe's Ben & Johnny are gone. This version of Reed is a shell of his usual self. Meanwhile Doom Galactus has consumed the entire universe & is coming for earth. The 616 Doom arrives to help Ben & Johnny just before the Doom Galactus arrives on earth... Man this series has been amazing! Zdarsky is killing it with his writing & the art has been stellar. The news that this title will continue when the new FF title re-launches in Aug made me very happy. My favorite title this week. 9/10.

Superman #42.Written by Peter J. Tomasi and Patrick Gleason. Cover by Patrick Gleason. Art by Doug Mahnke and Jaime Mendoza. The good: the art is wonderful. The bad: I hate Bizarro & bizarro talk. It gives me a headache. This story would have been tolerable as a one or two parter but it looks like it will be 4 issues. Ugh. Just not a fan of Bizarro. 4/10.

Doctor Star #2. Written by Jeff Lemire. Art and Cover by Max Fiumara. In 1951 Dr Star goes off into space to help save an alien race. However his few hours in space near a black hole cause 18 YEARS to pass on earth when he returns. His life has passed him by & his wife & son both have cancer. It is implied that his wife Joan has passed away by his daughter in law Rachel. Rachel kicks him out of the hospital where his son Charlie lies dying. At the end Dr Star meets up with old friends (other heroes)at a bar & vows to find a cure for Charlie. This spin off of Black Hammer is awesome. Lemire is writing a super hero saga mixed with science fiction while telling a story about the breakdown in the relationship between a father & son. Wow. It is an entertaining story with a message underlying it that any parent could relate to. Trying to balance work & family time. Having a sick child. This series will be one of my favorites in 2018. Great story, art, concept. 10/10.

Fighting American: Ties That Bind #2.Written by Gordon Rennie. Art and Cover by Andie Tong. FA's life is falling apart. His old enemy Doubleheader is head of the FBI. Special Agent Rutherford has been removed as his "handler". Speedboy has left to go his own way. He may have relatives in the present that his enemies can exploit. Chester & Chad Krunkle the possible grandson & great grandson of Nelson/Johnny Flagg. Rennie does a great job interweaving these separate plots together & I really like Tong's art style. This revival of Fighting American has been top notch! 8/10.

Koschei the Deathless #4Written by Mike Mignola Art by Ben Stenbeck Summary: Adrift in misery Koschei finds what he believes is true love...only to discover it's with his sworn enemy the Baba Yaga. Plot: I said before that I really felt that this book should have ended with the last issue, it started with a mission to kill dragons(which we learned were Ugdru Hem) and with that finished I wondered what else could there be. The answer is a grudge match with the Baba Yaga and although I love her dearly under Mignola's pen but unfortunately the story here is more telling than showing. So not only is the plot thin, and likely to get thinner as there are two more issues left, but it's being horribly over narrated making the story feel flat. What started out as a fun narrative tool, Koshchei telling Hellboy his story in a bar in hell, has become an albatross around the book's neck. Art: As flat as the plot may feel Stenbeck's art is as fantastic as always. The battle between Koshchei and his future self on the bridge was absolutely fantastic; the action was dynamic and the way he framed it made it clear and easy to follow which is no easy feat for a pitched sword fight. Grade:5/10

Star Wars #46Written by Kieron Gillen Art by Salvador Larroca Summary: With the changeling in their possession the Rebels plot to kidnap the Moff and free the former Mon Cala King gets complicated. Plot: Gillen's "Mutiny of Mon Cala" story continues its break neck pace in this third chapter with action and intrigue to spare. I love the high octane energy that Gillen is bringing to the Star Wars Universe with this story; it's fresh and exciting which isn't easy to do with almost 40 years of stories to compete with. I love the way he continues to build up Leia as a leader of the Rebellion, she's smart and strong and her skills as a leader are really highlighted here by the continued build up of her relationship with trios and the bold plan to free the Mon Cala king. On top of that I'm really excited to see how the rebellion on Mon Cala will play out, I always wondered how they supported the Rebellion so openly with their supply of ships to the Rebel fleet and this story looks to be digging in to that which is fantastic. Art: I didn't think Larroca could get any worse with his photo "referencing" but he really sinks to new lows here as both the heads of the Moff and the Imperial woman are straight up photographs pasted on drawn bodies and the coloring just can't hide it as not only are they more detailed but in several places the proportions are all wrong which makes them stick out like a sore thumb. Grade:7/10

I was a little concerned with where this was going with Doom becoming Galactus. But DAMN! This is just a super crazy fun book. It careens from from high to high.

I finally read Sherlock Frankenstein and it was very good. But this is a step beyond both.

At first I thought I liked this just because it riffed on James Robinson's Star Man run, but it's become so much more than that with this issue.

Spider-Man #239Written by Brian Michael Bendis Art by Oscar Bazaldua Summary: The Sinister Six's plan to steal and sell a helicarier seems to be about to come off without a hitch when Spider-Man and his amazing friends(the Champions) come by to break it all up. Plot: I've been loving that Bendis brought back Miles' Uncle Arron to head up a new version of the Sinister Six, but this issue was pretty much just a big fight scene with out any real character moments to make it feel really worth while. Don't get me wrong, I like action and I understand that big action set pieces are a staple of the genre but in this case there wasn't a whole lot other than that going on which made a very quick, and slightly dull read. You'd think the opposite would be true, more action= more excitement, but it simply isn't the case when it's the only element going on; you need strong character moments to make you buy into the action and really feel it otherwise it's just a bunch of pictures of guys punching each other and you have no real reason to care who is punching who or why. Bendis can still land this story with the conclusion but this chapter was a dud. Art: Vazaldua's art is clear and crisp but like the plot there's not much beyond the surface level to wrap onto. Grade:5/10

Batman #44 by King, Janin, Jones, Chung, and Bellaire: I don't usually read Batman, but it was designated as the shop owner's pick of the week so I gave it a try. As the wedding of Batman and Catwoman approaches, this issue sums up nearly 80 years of their relationship in one tidy package. The story cuts back and forth between a restless Selena breaking into a boutique at night to try on wedding dresses and classic scenes of the Batman/Catwoman relationship. It's been a long time since I read some of the stories referenced, but I think they stuck to the dialog word for word and we see several of Catwoman's classic looks (including my favorite purple dress with green cape). Even a panel or two with Batman in his blue trunks! Nothing cataclysmic in this issue, just a fun look back at one my favorite comic couples. I truly hope the wedding happens and Bruce Wayne finally finds some happiness. 8/10
