It has been about 5 years or so since I've picked up an issue of Avengers. I did recently read 676-678 as part of their 12 issue weekly event. I have stopped at 678. This is not Mark Waid at his best. It seems so forced and just dull. In regards to the art. It reminds my of Greg Pak. And it's so damn dark! I don't mean the tone I mean literally the art is too damn dark. Just sub par in so many ways. Guess it'll be another 5 years until I try an issue again.

I'm planning on picking this up in trade, but I'm not surprised by that.. Waid seems like he's kinda done with Marvel right now (though I haven't read his new Cap series).. I feel like he needs to go do DC for a while (I know, he probably won't) or be and editor, or something to get a recharge.

His new Captain America run has been OK, from a writing/plot standpoint (Samnee's art is still taking a lot of my getting used to). First issue was really good, second was good, third one was decidedly "meh".

Um, it's not just Waid on this event. It's co-written by him, Jim Zub, and Al Ewing and features a team-up of the three main Avenger groups of today.

I actually kinda feel the same about Al Ewing, to be honest.. His first book (Cap and the Avengers, I think? It gets confusing with all the name changes these days) was fantastic, but Ultimates was less so, and US Avengers (I think that was him) was really disappointing, especially considering I loved the characters he was using. I'm really hoping there will be a Morrison-like reset with one main book, a good roster, and a great creative team.

I have no problem with Ewing. He seems to be following Hickman in the Big Ideas dept (especially with Ultimates) but I like his characerization better than Hickman's.
I've read the first three parts of this event (I'm a tad behind because I get Avengers through the mail. Yes, Marvel still does that). So far, I've liked it, interesting set-up and seeing the different teams butting heads over the best approach to handling this crisis.
We also get the intro of this new founding Avenger, Voyager. They even show a few instances of where she fits into the canon and she seemed to vanish from sight and memory around Avengers #70. I'm still a little ambivalent towards this, waiting to see how she may fully settle in after this event but they use her in a creative fashion, whereas most of the long-time members remember her and would willingly defer to her leadership but since she's been out of the loop for so long, she instead defers to the nominal leaders of the three teams; Sam, Rogue and Bobby. And not everyone is comfortable with that decision.
