It probably has more to do with Kurt Busiek's ongoing health issues.
Cei-U! I summon the likelier possibility!

Also probably a sign it sells better in trade and through the book trade than through Diamond, and monthly sales aren't enough to be a loss leader or pay for production costs, so might as well skip that step. It also allows them to schedule as they wish. Kurt has a couple of creator-owned series going, but Anderson is tied ot the monthly schedule so it allows him to do other projects between Astro City OGN's.

There are already a couple of other publishers/comics that have switched away from publishing in monthly's first. Dark Horse and Top Cow have several digital-first/digital-only titles (DH's Critical Role series, for instance, is available as digital single issues and will be only available physically as a trade). Stjepan Sejic and Linda Sejic have both series that are direct to trade and don't have monthly issues.
Especially for smaller publishers and titles avoiding the direct market can save them a lot of money in the long run.

I'm wondering if Marvel might consider doing this with characters/books like Moon Girl & Devil Dinosaur, Kamala Khan, America Chavez, characters that have fan bases outside of the usual LCS crowd.

I know the only reason Moon Girl&Devil Dinosaur is still being published, is because it's doing really well on Scholastic Book Fairs, while sales in singles are low.

Makes sense. I mentioned in another thread recently that I don't buy singles, only trades. They read better in series. They stand on a bookshelf. They have a sturdier cover. I don't need to be reading the stories month by month; I am happy to wait until next year and then binge.

About 10 years ago Jim Starlin did what Busiek is doing. He released Kid Cosmos in a TPB form but it was never published as individual comics. I don't think it did too well, but that might have more to do with the unknown characters.
